i had an issue with the drag on my old saltist 30th. I was maxing out at 7#s.
So I recently swapped out the original drags with Carbontex Smooth drag.
But even with the replacements, i'm getting a max 9#s.
and i also made sure the drag spring washers were oriented correctly ()
I've taken it a part a few times now and not sure what else to check.
the diagram of the reel is low res so maybe i missed something.
any help would be appreciated.

about 1.5-1.75 full turns of the star drag. Also there's lots of play or slop (star drag) during the first 1.5 turns.

Sounds like a spacer or spring washer is missing...check against this schematic. 8)

A video is worth 10000 words. It appears that the star is not fully seated on the gear sleeve for those first set of turns; it should not have that much movement along the same axis of the gear sleeve. Are the threads stripped in that section? Was the reel like this before you did the service?

So i found some interesting things that may be a separate issue from the drag but still needs to be fixed.

I also noticed the spacing sleeve B (Key No. 55) has a lot of play

So i un-spooled to see if there was "tape" or any layer for the braid to hang on to and there wasn't anything.
So i used some painters tape (blue kind) and re-spooled it. But...it's difficult to spool it tight so i need to get it respooled.
I also had a daiwa BG20 so i swapped out the star drag and it seemed to have less play.
so between the 2 things, i was able to get the drag to about 9.5-10#s. Which is better than before at about 7#s but still way short.
the daiwa site says it should have 25# but if it got to 15-20# i would be happy.
or are my expectations off?
I Serviced one of these not long ago, had the same trouble, turnt out I did not have the front bearing tapped in far enough, just check it, good luck cheers Don.
No, I don't think your expectation of 20 lbs is too high - I just did a rough check on one of my 30TH with 6.4:1 gears, finger tight drag & almost full spool and got around 23 lbs - pulling straight off the spool. If you have the 4.9:1 gears it should have more drag again.
The photos of the star look normal - if the threads are OK and the drag washers are in the right order and the line is not slipping you should be getting more drag. Maybe the IAR clutch bearing is slipping slowly and the back-up 'ABU style' dog isn't engaging? ???
