Title: Hawaiian wide spool still rubbing on the frame
Post by: ky_sharker on June 30, 2020, 03:25:51 AM
I put a set of boca abec 7 bearings in it and my spool is still hitting the frame but only seems to be in 1 spot really. Any ideas on what to do now?

Likely need to put a shim under the bearing to move the spool over a little

Where do I find the shims to do this?

Cut one out of a beer can!

So I just need a few disks of thin metal in the cup to push the spool over a little

Yes,something like a very thin washer under the bearing to move it over a little. Cut a disc from a beer can or some other thin metal.

Which side is rubbing?  The right (drive side) or left?

If the shim don't do it, check the frame since it's only rubbing in one area.

Picked up my Sailfisher(all stock) the other day and noticed the freespool spin was not long enough when tilted towards the tail-plate side. Tried lots of bushing adjustments, delrin dot shims and a frame rebuild...,no improvement. Finally figured; frame tweak from the bakelite swelling. Filed and wire brushed the tail-plate---nope. Had to resort to filing the tail-plate ring after finding the rub area---got it!
Now I gotta watch the filed section for corrosion, which reminds me that I still need to paint and grease the file marks.

Its rubbing on the right side on the front of the frame in one spot mostly on the spool.

I would try to loosen the screws, shift the side plate back slightly, and retighten. There should be a little tolerance that could solve your problem.

I tried that and it feels and sounds better. I'll put it on a rod tomorrow and see what it does under load

I read this thread and the postings and since I did not have an answer I did not respond.  I read the last post which said that the problem was fixed.  Then I suddenly realized that I not only did not know the answer but I do not know what a Hawaiian Wide is.  How about a couple of pics?  Dominick

Dominick, a Hawaiian Wide is a little wider then a HLW. It's the width of the Newell Marlin Special and a Tiburon WEX.

It's used in Hawaii for a technique called slide bait fishing for a fish they call ulua (giant trevally). They fish from cliffs with 13+ foot rods. I got it to target giant catfish mostly. Here are a couple pics it's about 1/4 inch wider than the 113hlw i have 547 yards of Kastking 65lb braid and 200 yards of Ande 60 lb mono on it
