Welcome Ryan. You have certainly joined an august bunch of guys. And on into September as well  ;D ;D

On a non-related note, does anyone remember the name of the "companion" resort on the mainland near Cedros that Cedros Sportfishing was advertising 4-6 months ago? Similar resort but more inshore type fishing. Just wondering if anyone has been there and what was their opinion?
Want to take my step-son and son in law panga fishing.
In 24 hours I'll  be heading to Puerto Vallarta and Marla's No Tuna-No Chinga experience. Be interesting to see what additional restrictions are in place for international travel. UGH
Merry Christmas,

GA Mike

Based on my single trip my biggest recommendation is simple. As in keep it simple. A bunch of ringed circle hooks, a few surface irons and one or two things to bounce on the bottom. And sabikis, lots and lots of sabikis. A 30 pound and 50 pound outfit and you are all set.

two rods, two reels.  a 30 pound jig outfit and a 50 pound jig outfit.  we will be casting alot.  for calicos, it's small swim baits and small iron, all two, three or four ounces.   for yellowtail, we troll with rapala cd-14's, cast yoyo iron or surface iron, cast sp minnows (hard plastic baits), fly line or slow troll with circle hooks (2/0, 4/0 or 6/0) and live sardine or mackerel, dropper loop with circle hooks (4/0 or 6/0) and 12-16 ounces of lead.  you'll also need four sabikis, one for each day to make bait.
Title: Re: Cedros Sportfishing, August 30 to September 3, 2021
Post by: MarkT on March 24, 2021, 06:05:07 PM
I usually take 3 rods.  I flyline and slow troll Macs on 50# with an 8/0 Eagle Claw circle hook.  I take a 8-9' rod for throwing surface iron, a 6'6" - 7'6" rod for flylining/slow troll/yoyo and usually an 8' Calico stick with a bait caster for plastics and hardbaits.  I've trolled the smaller Magnum X-Raps or equivalent Yozuri or Nomads for YT.

I really don't see any reason to bring more than 2 rods, a 30 and a 50. Honestly, you can do away with the 30 if you don't mind bouncing a sabiki with a 50# rig or you can get away with a 30 if you have the gas to not get smoked with light gear all day (I don't right now.)

The thing I WILL bring more of is surface iron. I'm thinking at least 3-4?

YT at Cedros love Mac's... just sayin'!   I've caught a lot on surface iron and yoyo too.  I've used flatfalls there and have caught 2 bass at once on them, but I don't think I've caught YT on them there but I'd imagine they work.

I'm not planning to bring back fish. But I'll bring a blue cooler bag and give you my fish. I'll get the bag back at the SoA.
I'm going to take it a lot easier this year, especially on that 1st half day where we only sling iron. My elbow hurt for 3 months afterward. At 71 I'm too old and too good looking to wear myself out at the start of the trip. But apparently not too smart  :)

Title: Re: Cedros Sportfishing, August 30 to September 3, 2021

You really don't need too much: Hooks for fishing Macs, plastics and stickbaits for Calicos, yo-yo and surface iron for YT and everything else too. Sabiki rigs for making bait and a couple torpedo sinkers and you're good to go. Something to troll can't hurt too.

I'm taking 6 8/0 circle hooks, some lead heads/plastics, a few hardbaits, 6 iron (2 yo-yo, 4 surface) and some Sabiki rigs and sinkers. I'm taking a spool with some extra 50# mono and my dykes/duckbills/belt. JX Raptor/UC Predator 76 for Macs and yo-yo. TranX 500 hg/Phenix psw809xhj for surface iron. Lexa 400/Phenix psw809h for plastics/hardbaits.  Bring it on!

Mark, thanks for all the great advice. I am trying to match your rod and reel recommendations, i found a 929h blank locally and i am having it wrapped for surface iron, which goes with my PC 501, a swimbait rod rated 1-6 with an old school upgraded daiwa ps55, and a custom wrapped black steel 7'6" 30-80 with a tricked out pro gear 3500, not a two speed, but its what I own right now. And I am taking in all the tackle recommendations and triming it down as suggested.
Title: Re: Cedros Sportfishing, August 30 to September 3, 2021
Post by: MarkT on July 30, 2021, 02:14:01 AM
There's no problem with 9' rods on the plane. The 3500 would work great. Plenty of the AT guys use tricked out old Penns... 4/0 and 6/0 so 2 speeds are nice but not necessary. You might feel different if you latch on to a 40#+ but it's nice to find out. My son got a 45# YT on a JX 6/3 w/40# and 37# and 25# YT on a Curado 300 while fishing for Calicos. I use a 50# leader for all purposes down there... they aren't shy! My baitcasters have a 3' leader on the braid and I use a Tactical Angler clip to make it easy to swap lures.  All my tackle and reels will fit in a backpack.

Post by: rogan on July 30, 2021, 03:20:00 AM
Wow, a 37#er on a 300 curado! That was a fight. I should be able to get it all in my 3600 sized plano bag, reels included. Then a small second bag for clothes and extras. I appreciate your comment about "its nice to find out", thats exactly what I want to do. I've been waiting two years for this trip, I'm stoked.

My take on those  9 and 10 foot rods :

I prefer 7 to 7.5 feet rods  for casting irons from a panga.  Especially on  Cedros.  Shorter rods can handle fish better next to to the boat,  less leverage working against you on the fight, and giving up that extra 10 to 20 yards of casting distance compared from a extra long rod can actually be an advantage.  Many of the yellowtail spots on Cedros are over relatively shallow hard bottom, so a hookup over a long cast means that a yellowtail can reach the rocks without  taking any line.  I am a believer in not casting any farther than necessary on  yellowtail boils in shallower water.   And a seven  footer is more useful for also trolling and live baiting.   I don't want to get on a panga with more than two rods, especially if I am sharing the boat.

The fish don't usually hang as far away from a panga as they do from a big long ranger, so  a long cast is usually not needed to reach the boils.   Just cast to the front of the boil.  And you can always move the boat to get a bit closer.   Pangas are very portable :)

Just my opinion, which is probably not shared by the majority  of the SoCal crowd.

J,  Thank you for the response. As usual, your perspective is well thought out, sound reasoning to back up your experience. Part of my decision to use the 9 footer is based on it's what I already own in the right weight class.  I have a 7.5' and 9' from the same maker that are both 20-30lb class rods, which is a little too light for this application, hence my desire to use the 9' 20-50 929H.  In my casting practice with these lighter rods, I noticed that the 9' does not offer me a noticeable improvement in overall casting distance at my current level of skill versus the 7.5'. Same lure on both rods gives me 40yards +- 3 yards. Occasionally I get it right, good timing, clean release, good thumb control and I hit 50+, but it's not consistent. A 7.5' would probably be a better choice for the reasons you mentioned, but as Mark mentioned earlier, it's fun to find out on your own! Next year might be completely different setups, but then I will a new budget to work with too...

Today I finally completed a 5 month project at work.  It's been a lot of hard work, physically and mentally, with minimal time off.  I am really looking forward to this trip.

My plan is drive out to SD from AZ on Sunday morning(Aug 29th), arriving around noon. It seems in years past, the hotel of choice is the Vagabond. Will this year be a repeat?  I'd like to book a room now and be prepared with a place to stay on Sunday night.

I booked a room w/ 2 double beds at the Ramada on Rosecrans-1 block away. $144 + tax. The Vagabond was renovated over the summer, name changed to Sea Harbor Hotel, and the nightly rates almost doubled to $190 + tax. $50 bucks difference isn't a deal breaker, but Sea Harbor wasn't accepting reservations when I made my travel arrangements back in May.

I stayed overnight at the Ramada last month before my 8-day. It was beyond godawful; not only was the reception desk person an imbecile, but I was forced to change rooms at 9:30 pm because the damned idiots in the room over me allowed their infernal ba***rd kid to incessantly run and jump and bang no matter how many times I had the front desk call them to complain.   >:(

Never, and I do mean NEVER, again... I've already booked the Sea Harbor for next year.  ::)

Aiala,  sorry to hear of your lousy experience. I spent a few weeks on business travel this year and had similiar experiences, but it wasnt kids playing, it was the adults jumping on the bed🤮.

I've been operating off the "2 3600 Plano box" rule; but I think I'll be way below one gallon.

going down is not such a big deal.  it's the return trip that is at issue.  most of the tackle that i bring down will stay.  on the return trip, it's rods, reels, a few personal items and fish.  even the old ratty clothes will stay.  ;D

Clothes! I bring 2 pairs of shorts, 2 shirts and 3 pairs of skivvies. Use the laundry service, think light. Imagine you are living out of a cardboard box for a week.

You don't have enough time to soak a gallon of plastics even if you don't fish. Alan used to say 2 3600 boxes, I have one slot of a 3600 box with a half dozen plastics and another with 3 heads. I won't use 1/3 of it.

I'm getting a jump start on the Cedros trip!!!
I'm leaving Leesburg, GA in a few minutes for the 2.5 hour drive to ATL. Alan is picking me up at SFO around 2 PM. Probably do some hungover salmon fishing on Friday. Driving to Fresno Saturday to stay with his parents and maybe I can also visit with an old VN buddy who has a helicopter flying service there in Fresno. Then off to SD on Sunday to meet up with you guys.
I've never been accused of having too much fun!

our travel weight on the way down should not be an issue.  it's the way back with the fish that is the big concern.  my plan is to leave the extra clothes, toiletries and most of the tackle.  i plan to bring back the the two rods, the two reels, the near empty duffle bag and fish.  that's all.  the rest of the stuff gets left on the island.  whoever i fish with on the last day will get all the tackle.  the clothes will get left in the room.

That's actually a question I haven't had answered, how frozen are the fish when we get to SD? I understand they have new freezers.

Last I talked with Rosie they had not upgraded the freezers yet. They are looking at expanding the lodge as well in the future. I (Rosie) always took my fish to five star and they put in in their blast freezer while I killed time before going to the airport.

Tom and I follow another charter (technically Rosie's competitor) on Cedros. He told me that the boats came in with Yellowtail limits by 7:30 AM today! Judging by the pictures it was a nice quality of fish too.

It was a fun trip...good weather, good food, good company, and good fishing! I got home about 11pm after the long drive north with Jack. The next morning I slept in until 5:45, and then had to grab the door jamb on the way into the bathroom, as the panga in my head was still pitching and rolling a bit! I made Jack's poached yellowtail recipe that night with polenta and red pepper sauce, and it was delicious!

hahaha, I can recall that, 1st time I took my 3 kids for a fishing trip in a panga, on our way back to home in the car, all of them told me the same, if I close my eyes I still can feel the rocking movement of the panga, that feeling was still present when they went to bed that night  ;D ;D ;D

Had an absolute blast! Fished with some great anglers and caught more than my fair share of fish and can't wait for next year. Headed back for that 11 lb world record pinto? bass.  Have attached some pictures from the trip.

For next year, any interest in adding another day or two to the trip? From Rosie's website it looks like the cost does not go up all that much relatively speaking. Also would selfishly prefer a trip spanning a weekend for working stiffs like me  ;D

I would be disappointed if all those years of sonar mapping didn't lead to some secret spots!

For those who are curious:

10 lbs 4 ozs....I bet some of our fish would have gone at least 9 lbs!
