Title: Help with Reel ID
Post by: defrag4 on September 22, 2020, 09:24:41 AM
hey guys, I bought this reel off of craigslist last year and could use some help ID'ng it, I thought it was a penn senator 4/0 but looking a bit closer it appears to be some sort of knock-off, unfortunately any labeling it once had is all gone.  It just says "High Speed Performance" and "Double Precision Ball Bearings"

the main difference i have found between a real Penn and this reel is the housing/gear plate, if you look here on the housing on a real penn it has screws to remove the gear plate from the housing, whereas on this reel,  you remove the gear plate with screws from the inside

also the gear plate itself is a full circular piece of metal as opposed to the half moon that the penns use

I got hung up on a damn buoy while trolling yesterday, it hooked, pulled drag for a second and then completely shattered my plastic attwood rod holder and into the drink it went! crap!  We doubled back and sure enough the lure was still stuck in the buoy and I was able to grab it and pull my rod/reel from posiedons clutches!

Got home and took her apart to clean out the saltwater and I discovered a few metal chunks rattling around which i have identified as being some of the teeth off the gear sleeve! Gear sleeve appears to be fine threaded with 8-teeth, about ~37mm tall

I also discovered the previous owner upgraded the drags to carbontex, so thats sweet! there were 4 carbon washers identical shape (23mm wide) and 4 metal washers in the stack

Anyway, I need to ID so it I can hopefully order some penn replacement parts for that gear sleeve, the guts look almost identical to most of the classic penns so i am hoping they will fit, the width of the spool itself was 65mm

thanks guys!

I am sure someone will remember the Name so I don't have to use my brain at 6:00am but we have seen a few of them over the years, Anglers send them in and we have to call them with the bad news that is a knock off 4/0.

Donno.  Maybe Chuyo or Olympic.

Going to need the luck of the Irish to find a replacement sleeve.  First, check the dimension of the bridge shaft.  If a Penn sleeve will fit properly (35mm tall) on the internal dimension (shaft size), I can donate one to the cause.  You may have to shim the new sleeve, or not.  Can you supply the shaft dimension OD?

No damage to the reverse dog? Nevermind, I see it now.  Also, your shaft looks to be tapered with two thread sizes. Something will not fit, either the star or the handle nut, when and if you use a Penn substitute.  And then a new handle?

Could be a fun can of worms.

That gear sleeve looks a lot like a Newell style sleeve.  Maybe one of those can be used?
Might be easier though to just find a real 4/0 Senator.

Seems like in the 60's a company named ANGLER in Japan made Reels like this .
Where the Guts were screwed in on the inside like yours.

Brother, good luck.
I actually think, from a maintenance point of view, the inside screws make sense; but, finding parts for that thing may be rough. Your time might be better spent buying a used 113H.

actually you might be onto something here xjchad, i had looked at the newell briefly but never the sleeve, now that I am looking at the internals of the newells it does look similar

found this pic of the circular gear plate and 2-step gear sleeve from a S-229 newell!

finding the newell gear sleeve is giving me hope, unfortunately I cannot find any specs on the size of the sleeve

these are the specs off of my sleeve, measurements taken from the flat side of the threads,  does anyone happen to have a gear sleeve from a newell 200/300/400 series they could measure for me?

i see a few used newell gear sleeves for sale on ebay and some upgraded 10-tooth SS versions on cortez, just not sure if they actually will fit

@steelfish

Almost funny, but we should all be ashamed.... or maybe worried.  That was only a few years ago and nobody remembered.
