The same fellow who posted the teardown of the Akios (see the link in my earlier post), also did a teardown of an Abu 6500CS Rocket (01 04). It was a perfectly normal tutorial, nothing out the ordinary, until what's that? That is a spring that doesn't normally reside on the clutch arm. I checked the (01 04) and (01 06) schematics and it is not there.
Any comments on purpose or benefit of the mod? Edit: Not a mod, just an older style variation that Abu used on some reels through the 90's.
My guess is that it assists in rotating the clutch arm toward the ratchet in the gear sleeve. I never found a problem there that would need addressing.

Abu is kinda funny in this regard. Some of their reels use the standalone return spring like the reel in your photo, and some have the return spring integrated with the position holder. Even some reels with similar foot stampings can be set up either way, but will be different revisions. Some models, such as the 6500CI, used a leaf spring instead of a coil spring to re-engage the clutch.
So you're thinking it came from the factory like this. It doesn't appear on the Abu 6500CS Rocket schematics, but I suppose it could be a random substitution due to parts availability.
The 6500 CI (03 00) schematic shows it as Return Spring, part number 22804:

It's definitely factory installed. I've run across a number of Ambassadeurs set up like that. My latest acquisition, a 5000 (foot # 0500) has the return spring.
Whew. I looked at that and thought, "aren't they all like that". I believe this one is 1973.

Your photo was from the era of all metal brake plate parts.
The tutorial with the stray spring was from the more modern plastic era, but very early as noted by the '01 04' date code. Schematics for that reel didn't show the part, but as noted above the spring was used on some of the early models from that time up until the late 90's. It is possible that Abu Garcia sent the reel like that from the factory, or the fellow owning the reel could have transferred parts from a reel that did use it. Either way, I didn't expect to see that spring in that generation of reel.
Looking at the models that include this spring, I may have encountered reels with this spring in the past but that would have been around 15 years ago. All the 90's models I have seen in the last several years look internally just like the (15 00) model reels with the exception of drag washers, mechanical antireverse and older style 2 block centrifugal brakes.
This is the brake plate with the parts assembed. The position holder (#21874) does not have a built in return spring like the later version.
