I'm all Pfizer-ed up as of 4/28.
For several weeks I've been unsuccessfully trying to book rooms at the Vagabond for the Cedros (Aug 29) and two SoA trips (Oct 4 and 22). Apparently the Vagabond on Scott St. is closed for renovation until mid-late June and will reopen as the Sea Harbor Hotel. And the prices will double to approx $250 a night.
I went ahead and booked a room with 2 double beds at the Ramada on Rosecrans for Aug 29. I stayed there last year and it was OK. Only a block from the marina. And about 1/2 the price of the "new and improved" Sea Harbor.
So Alan, you won't have to sleep in the truck.

Darn! Delta is screwing around with my ATL flights again. I'm now arriving SAN at 11:30 AM on the 4th. And Departing at 12:45 PM on the 13th.
Hopefully the fish processing will go a little faster this year. I'm only planning on taking one 50 lb bag of fish home anyway.

I'm pretty sure the captain of that trip was Frank. He is no spring chicken. I sure hope he is ok.

If you read the headlines it looks grim, but that is just because they are highlighting the parts of the studies that show vaccines are not as effective in preventing asymptomatic to mild infections (which was not the target when formulating the vaccine dosage). By the the end of the stories, you will see that the vaccines (esp RNA) appear to still be working quite well against serious illness, with the Delta variant now dominant.
If you read the actual studies it currently breaks down like this:
The data that is generating all the headlines is coming from Israel (the first country with widespread RNA vaccinations) showing the vaccines providing decreasing protection from symptomatic infection over time. BUT: The folks that got immunized first were the elderly (where vaccines in general are typically not as enduring), and the much more infectious Delta variant has taken over in the interim. Plus the data set is small, and this is observational data which usually means low confidence. They did observe that the overall protection against serious illness is still in the 90s. And the COVID wards in the hospitals in Israel are still predominantly populated by the unvaccinated with the Delta variant. Just like here in the USA.
From a scientific and public health perspective, the vaccines appear to be more relevant than than ever.
I haven't been bookmarking the studies, but here is one of them that looked at infected but immunized hospital workers in Israel:

331 million-population of the United States (US Census Bureau)
222 million-confirmed and suspected CV-19 cases (Center for Disease Control)
170 million fully vaccinated (Center for Disease Control)
So 2/3 of the US population has been infected or suspected infection, 40% have had the vaccine. Best case numbers, everyone in the US has either had CV-19 or been vaccinated. Worst case 2/3 have had CV-19 and 40% vaccinated....

Some good digging there. Agree it will burn out in time eventually due a combination of vaccination and exposure.
But there are these overlaps and special cases. Immunity through exposure is often not nearly as robust as vaccines are against future exposures and/or new variants. Plus many folk have both been infected and vaccinated (which is a good idea - these folk appear to be the most protected group). So we cannot simply add up vaccinated plus infected, especially for a novel virus that is early on in adapting to humans.

But I will note that getting your vaccinations completed at least a month before your next long range trip will greatly decrease the odds of becoming "that guy".

We depart Tuesday, 10/5. I fly out from GA on Monday 10/4. The only other two days available for me (us) to get tested are ln a Saturday and a Sunday. Even if I find a test facility open on the weekend, and get a negative result, I then spend 5 hours in a tin can at 40,000 ft with 300 masked strangers.
Is that potential exposure going to be a problem/concern for anyone?
If so, I arrive SD at noon on the 4th. I could probably find a testing facility in SD and get tested there???
I've had the Moderna vaccine. I somewhat believe that the vaccine helps. I'm not a fan of masks. IMO the mask of Zorro or the Lone Ranger would be just as effective as the crap masks we're required to wear.
I'm not a Dr., but I know all viruses are particulate. As are odors. If you've ever smelled a fart through several layers of clothing from someone 6+ feet away......

If you read down past the initial 14 day incubation period statement in Ron's WebMD link, you will see:

Looking only at cases for which they could determine the exact time of exposure, researchers found that the time interval from exposure to positive PCR test ranged from three to five days, with a peak at 3.71 days. So a negative PCR shows that as of 3-5 days before the test that you were Delta variant free (a bit longer for original flavor COVID Classic, but Delta is dominant now). That 3-5 day window is the wildcard. If you caught the virus, you can start spreading it within a couple days of exposure, and before you feel symptoms.
I was planning a bit of travel recently myself and had a chance to talk to a researcher involved with this stuff. He broke down the risk like this - from highest to lowest:
1. Shuttles and group transports (Vans and such)
2. Taxis/Ubers
3. Airport lines/crowds, Indoor dining
4. The flight
Wearing a well fitting, authentic N95 or KF94 mask goes a very long way in protecting you and others in the riskier situations. If you feel like letting your guard down a bit and actually enjoying life, outdoors in the sun is the place to be.

Hmm, gas vs liquid encased viral particle. Had too look this up:
Well, methanthiol (the molecule that makes farts smell bad) should at least 100 times smaller than a single COVID virus. And the virus needs to be encased in something wet/gooey like mucous or it will dessicate and be unable to reproduce, so the actual size of a dangerous COVID "package" is even larger.
In terms of bad smells, to protect from organic vapors, you need a respirator with a organic vapor cartridge. If you are worried about your "effect" on others, they make these sealed boxer shorts with an activated charcoal exhaust filter :). So that takes care of farts.
For particles like viruses, the hard part for a quality particulate filter is not actually the smallest particles. They are so small that intermolecular attraction/resistance to the filter and other particles causes the particle to zig zag instead of traveling on a straight path, and it will usually bounce into a fiber and get stuck. Large particles will simply not fit. It is the tweener size that gets tricky. Small enough to fit between the fibers, but too big to get knocked off course. These are taken care of if the filter can maintain an electrostatic charge. The charge pulls these tweener particles into the fibers. A nice fresh N95 mask has several layers of fiber mesh (not weave) to cut down on any straight line paths, and a strong electrostatic charge to catch the tweeners.
But air is a fluid (like water), and the filter provides resistance. Fluids will take the path of least resistance, so if the mask is not properly fitted ( no facial hair either), the airflow goes around the filter instead of through it.
You are right that many (most) folks half-#### their masking, and some leave their noses hanging out as an act of defiance. Mask usage can provide a range of outbound and inbound protection from near zero to near 100%. Go into any COVID ward and ask the DRs or RNs if the will expose themselves to a patient without wearing an N95.
Sorry to carry on on this. I actually had to learn a bit about respirators and how build particulate filters and organic filters for some of my hobbies. I am extremely far from having any expertise, but some of the stuff going around the interwebs just makes me cringe. People hate masks (me too!) and are looking for a reason not to wear them. The poor quality of the reasoning is pretty damming.
Testing closer to the date of your departure, and more importantly upping your masking game a bit before and during travel to the landing will help to decrease the odds of infecting your boat mates. It is actually kinda Ohana-ish...
But don't take my or Ron's word for it. Talk with your medical provider...

We found out Thursday that my son has lymphoma. The doctors we have talked to all are very confident it will be successfully treated. Treatment will start in September or early October and I need to be here.

A nasal swab home test is acceptable.
The test can be done no earlier than 10/2 and I assume up to the time of departure. A picture of the negative reault is sufficient.
Those home test kits may get more difficult to acquire as this thing rages, so i would start looking for one now.

I tried to buy one on Amazon the other day. They are out of the one that gives quick at-home results. They only had the one that costs a hundred bucks and has to be mailed in to a lab. Locally, you can walk in to a lab for a test and they email the results the next day. Those are a hundred bucks too.
I just booked a room at the recently renovated Sea Harbor/Vagabond for Oct 4th. 2 Queen beds. Got the senior discount, $174 total. That's $35 more than the Ramada a block away, but much closer to the boat. If someone hasn't booked a room and wants to share, let me know.

I just made a reservation at the Sea Harbor Inn (formerly The Vag), and the price was $197 for 2 Queen room (AAA rate). When I checked the Ramada, it was something like $168. I like staying right next to H&M where the SOA berths, makes things easy. For parking, you can go with the landing or Ramada (although the Ramada is $15/ day vs. $10/day).
I got rooms at the Ramada with 2 double beds for $113/night/room. Should be good enough for the nights rest before boarding.
That's a good rate for sure. BTW, you're able to sleep the night before?😎

Yes, we have reservations for the entire boat. It's a little more complicated this year, but we will be tagging fish ahead of time, but still sharing to try to keep guys from getting too far behind. I will be giving a list to Fisherman's Processing so they know who needs to get out the same day and who wants their fish frozen for next day pick up.

Do those quick tests work for getting through places that require a test or vaccination? I thought you had to do the full lab PCR and get test result papers..... at a hundred bucks per pop.
Was replacing the top shots on my conventionals yesterday with RP knots when it dawned on me that the hollow core connections I completed last week for two 100 lb reels was done with 60 lb instead of 100 lb mono leader. The moment of truth came when I got to the Daiwa 400H for 60 lb, and, HUH??? Where did all my 60 lb mono leader go???

Back to square one for two hollow core connections. Almost as bad as when realized I left all my conventionals in the garage after arriving at the landing for the 2018 SOA charter...almost.
On the bright side, the mis-spliced 60 lb mono was salvageable as two coils of pre-measured 30'+ top shots...lemons to lemonade.

Just looked at the SOA position, last ping was 1.5 hrs ago and they are on a beeline straight for Ensenada. Save some fish for us guys 🤨. Bill

I just finished replacing 120 linear feet of rotted facia boards, hands are nicked, gouged, splintered, and sore. But at least it's done and my son can finish painting. Gonna meet up with John (Brewcrafter) tomorrow for the Tank and some "donations" for the trip.
I need to stop reading these threads, the more I read, the more I realize how much I don't know and don't have 😱😱😱

I am way way behind in being ready for this trip. Lost a few reels that I wanted to take. Too poor to buy replacements last minutes...arg...and packing. I have 3 reels that need line, and possibly all my reels needs new top shots. So we'll see how it goes.
I told myself to start prepping 1 year, then 9 months, then 6 months, then 3 months, and now...I'm so far behind...😭😭😭
I am thinking about bringing the line winder. I already have a Pelican box for it. I am probably going to bring all of the loaner rods and reels.
Sometime from Saturday morning or later, make sure get a covid test. You will need proof of a negative test taken not more than 72 hours prior to stepping on board. You will also need a passport and beer money. These three things are the absolute minimum. Anything else we can figure out.
This year you will not need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow. The boat is back to supplying bedding for the bunks.

Time to repack into a smaller bag. Is there a place close to your house where we can test Saturday? I "passed" the pre trip test but that was Tuesday.7

one boat came back with about 40 wahoo. grab some titanium at fisherman's landing when you arrive. i have crimps, but not enough wire.

Just took my 72 hour Covid test. Test result is negative! Took several pics of the test results. With the time stamp on the photos, I guess that's sufficient to get on the boat?

The covid results should be fine.
For wire, I've switched over to all titanium for bait and bombs. I still use heavy 7x7 for marauders.
