Title: How many rods?
Post by: MarkT on April 08, 2021, 03:36:20 AM
There is a thread on BD that asked how many rods? The guy asking had 73!  My response was he needed 1 more and tell your wife I said so!  I went out and counted mine and came up with 105... I probably missed a couple! Ya know, I probably also need at least one more!

14. Each has a distinct purpose. There is a small degree of overlap but for a given situation I'm not really left wondering which rod to use.

I'm fairly ruthless with keeping numbers down. If I have another, better setup that does the same job, I'll sell things.

Well over a hundred in New England, maybe 20 in Florida, I just tell the wife they're sensible, being like shoes for guys..... ;D

I think between 5 and 600, and maybe 50 blanks / parts to build one year. I have issues. Just bought three really nice Okuma Nomads from Charkbait about half price.

Cutty, I show the wife prices for tackle going up, and inform that no one will buy her used used shoes at a profit. :)

More than the wife thinks I have I'll say that much. I think it's more than 10 less than 15. I have more reels than rods.

I only have about 19 rods, and many have been broken and lovingly repaired.

They all hang on the garage wall where I can grab two and jump in my van.   The downside of that is that they are open for the Boss to see.

I probably have 25 seeker uluas alone 100h, 93h, skinny butt, baby ulua, white tigers, pinhead, red, blue, green, cex, white. I shudder to think how many are in the racks.  I just keep building them out of boredom.

The math I use for my wife is for everyone I sell will pay for 2 new ones for me. She quite asking questions a long time ago because she knows she can buy whatever she wants because I don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to squandering money
I think I have a reel for every rod at least close anyway

I built a rack in the garage to store rods and showed it to the wife.  She said that was dumb and started counting... she quit at 26 and I pointed out that she missed a bunch that weren't in the rack.  She just laughed and went back in.  She was a lot more into experiences than 'stuff'. We went to Europe 4 months before she died because there were a few countries she still hadn't been to and wanted to visit before she died.  She made it to all 50 states and 70+ countries.  I'm up to 48 states and 60+ countries.

Mark: Thanks for having 105 rods. This is great, now when the wife says you have too many rods and reels I can tell her about a guy who has 105 so .............................. I don't have a problem !! For some reason I have way more reels than rods. I may have to correct that problem.

counting how many reels we have?

do you work for the ISR now?
is it really Mark asking this or is it mark's wife using his account while he was sleeping?

Im with Lee on this, not a good idea to count rods and leave an evidence of that.

She has actually been after me for a cataloguing, in event of my untimely demise- I'm afraid to do so as I'm worth more dead :)

She has the contacts of a couple of people here to get direction on how to address the collection, so to speak, should my expiration be short-dated. Some items I feel are Ohana pieces that I'm temporary custodian of and which will be redistributed to members who understand the provenance- like the massive grip Sal made me for the 16/0 that matches  the Harnell it flies, rewrapped with thread from Harry K., and a whole lot of other pieces. Some to friends, many to Boy Scouts, as I was, and the rest sold. Not to take this thread in a somber place, but really, many of these things are assets, and obviously a 115L2 may look generally the same as a Gen 1 9/0 in box, to the untrained eye. I have neither :)

Before I joined up here, I think I had only 3-4 rods and reels at most.  Now 9yrs later, well let's just say that unlike my younger drinking partying days, I now have a lot to show for my money.  If I was to guess I'd say I probably have 50 rods and 75 reels and I only need one more of each.

Obviously, I'm not as dedicated to 'collecting' as some on here. Probably about 40 rods for various disciplines, but by way of mitigation near half belong to my wife. So, all the issues of numbers becomes mute, especially where my wife is concerned.

A common comment in past years, was that I was lucky as my wife fishes avidly. My reply was that it always cost me double whenever we went shopping for tackle.

The nice thing is when you get above 30-40 of something it's hard to tell when another is added 😎 just make friends with the UPS driver so you can meet for the next delivery instead of it being dropped at the door step....no time to figure out why the wife's shoes are sticking out from under the bed 🤔

40+ is the standard answer; I was doing well in terms of adding 'marginal needs' units until 10 days ago someone put a completely unused Richmake 8' trolling rod over 30yo and highly prized here in BC for sale for half it's market value.

To punish myself I cycled to his house which is halfway up a mountain-zipping back home with it wrapped up in the saddlebags sure was sweet!

I'm in Thorhammer's camp.  Not that I'm planning on leaving any time soon, and I have great fishing buddies, all my stuff is labelled (took about 6 months) for two reasons - A.  My memory is bad.  So I can remember what was serviced when, and what line when, etc.  B.  A brief history of the rod or reel.  I have rods and reels that have little or no actual value that go back generations in the family and in that respect are priceless.  My family is clueless about "all those rods and reels" and while I am nowhere near in Mark's league  ;D I would have plenty of junk to sort through if something happened.  I guess if I was smart, I probably should catalog everything in the event that something happens when I'm still around and I need to document to the insurance company the 45 United Composites and 45 St. Croix rods I lost....just joking! - john

Bill- I bought three :)

John, my insurance agent, who is a friend came to my house once. He said take a video, no one would ever believe it if something happened- and that was prolly 200 rods and reels ago, with most since then on the high end of customization or retail. There's a big difference between provenance on 30 Ugly Sticks vs 30 UC.

You are wise.  It wouldn't hurt to do a quick walk through video with a time stamp.  Not that I have anything against Ugly Sticks (I have a few) I certainly wouldn't want my entire arsenal judged by that by an insurer. - john

US certainly have their place, and I probably have a dozen. Some are lightweight loaners, after a "I know how to fish" guest broke a St Croix on my motor cowling and didn't tell me, but I saw and heard it thwack. They actually make great, durable live-bait rods for stripers and kingfish. Whippy fast tip is perfect to keep bait from getting jerked around but locks up quickly when hit for auto hook set.

Just like that flea market 4/0 for ten bucks covered in a protective crust of greasy dirt from a basement corner, I love a good rod rescue...."Sir, I can't go 70 bucks for that pair of vintage Fenwicks with all Aftco rollers and Varmac seats / SS butt. They'll need some thread work. How about 60 for both? The St Croix over there needs a tip and a guide; throw that in too, if I can get it for ten bucks". Done.

11, and 2 are freshwater that I haven't done in I can't remember, and 1 is an almost 100 year old bamboo antique. All my saltwater are top notch though, St Croix, Lami, Shimano, & Yamaga.

I don't chase big game so I don't have an extended arsenal like Alan's garage, but slow pitch jigging has given me an avenue into some lusciously overpriced imported from Japan gear.

does a rod w/ extra, optional or alternate-tapered sections count as more than one?

Do I count my kids' rods too? That's few enough I can still name them all. I have two from childhood, both glass Fenwicks built by a local rod builder in Tavernier FL 40+ years ago, a glass Star I bought during spring break my freshman or sophomore year of college ('94 or '95), a Penn graphite and a Daiwa graphite I got in the early 2000s. Fast forward 20 years and four kids later, three daughters each have one and my son has 2. I also have picked up 2 St. Croix in LF and MLF that wear Penn 716z and 714z reels. Oh, and I got a little 3' Ugly Stick "dock runner" for goofing off in a canoe.

I have too many.  I was picking them up here and there with the intention of restoring and repairing.  The problem is I can't stop playing with reels long enough to focus on rods. Rod work demands a space that I have to create and then break down.

If I could carve out the space, set everything up, and leave it, I would probably do the work on a regular basis and pick up more needy rods.  Then what!?  Have to put them somewhere.

Obviously, I wasn't thinking very far ahead when I started gathering old sticks.  I should have been buying surplus blanks.

I need a Space Management Professional who specializes in acute fishing equipment disorder.

I have never found it a good idea to ask my wife about how many of certain things she has.

Opens way too many cans of worms.

I never try to explain something to someone who has no possible way of understanding or comprehending it.

When it comes to rods and reels.

I have always stuck to the old lessons in the ballad written by Don Schmitz —- and recorded by Johnny Cash and Kenny Rogers.

The Gambler...

You've got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em,
Know when to walk away, know when to run.
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table.
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.

Just my approach.

Best, Fred

I think 450-500 rods, about 630 reels. Then blanks, rod parts, and reel parts that could all be built out...gonna thin the herd this winter. Outta room.

That said, just accumulated $200 in BPS gift cards and a Hatteras trip in a month...

John,
I have to tell my wife those numbers,my collection is modest comparatively.I havent counted my reels,I would guess 60 counting shelfies.I want to do a spreadsheet with pictures of the vintage ones and what I paid for them so she will know they are worth something.

Naw, there's some folks on with a lot more than I, either quality / qty or both. I can't hold up 15 Penn 9's  I pieced together against one of Chris's first Gen 9/0's, etc.

I have a "Frankenine" Fred gave me a side plate to make it fishable.w/different color sideplates and an OC handle,it's works like a singer sewing machine ,I would drive it to California "yada yada". My wife doesn't care that I buy reels, I think its more of what's the point? I explained they're like shoes, each has its own purpose or  even sentimental value. Maybe underware with holes in them,is a better explanation, the most comfortable, broke in just right, you hate to throw away...

I've slowed down the past couple of years. I've only added a Phenix psw909xh, Phenix Axis 760x2h (won in a drawing), Phenix Megalodon mpx-608 and a UC US Monster 90.

Add a Battle III DX 5000 to the list.
