Was given reel has missing bail spring.
Would like any info on how to replace and purchase.
I have a spinner maker can make one if it is .020 to .026 spring wire.
Need to know how to bend it.
Reel was made by Lionel in 40's and 50's.
I restore Mitchell's and know my way around basic to complicated repairs.
Retired Aircraft Mechanic 40 plus years.
Thank you for your time and trouble.
maybe fred. he'll be along shortly. if not him, i have no ideal...... :-\
Post a couple of photos of the reel, Schrack —
If I don't have the loose spring — I could take one out of a old Bache-Brown slated for a reel lamp base.
Glad to help, if possible.
Best,
Fred
I TINK those had Full Bails and Half Bails .
Which do you have ?
Full bail, guess these things are hard to find.
Goals, yeah that would be super.
I don' t have the foggyist how to do any thing with this reel.
Kinda looks like spool comes off, cover with one screw comes off and spring goes inside housing and overhaul.
This is becoming a quest!
Here's some photos of a 3, for reference? I posted a bit on this one years ago, cause I was impressed with all the metal in this reel.
Don't recall taking the bail apart, though. A full bail model's godda be different. Midway Tommy seemed to know some details about them. One thing I found-out was that the rotor is rivited on permanently at the propeller - looking part(bail trip mechanisim).
Looks simple, From looking the spring is held in by the screw, looks like one loop, size is small like .022 have lots of that.
Thank you this helps, once I take mine apart along with these photos just might be able to make one.
Not as easy as Mitchell's.
Might be putting some of them up for sale in the future.
How did you take it apart?
Handle unscrews?
Spool comes off after you take knob off?
Remove side cover, then how is brass square held on?
What is the little pin beside it.
I haven't touched mine yet.
If you have dis assembly instructions.
Just don't want to break any thing that is simple by doing it wrong.
Thanks Again, Ron Schrack
Never worked on a Model 4, but other than the full bail it shouldn't be a whole lot different than a Model 3. Start disassembly & post some photos & we can lead you through the process. You do need a special tool, which very few people nowadays have, to remove the rotor and pinion gear & tube. You'll have to just thoroughly clean and air dry that area & then lube it.
Roger Dat on special tool.
What can you use?
Pliers do not work, can't get a hold and this part has to come out to get to bail spring.
The pin is screwed into shaft. Would assume Left To loosen.
Also the spring on reverse is not working.
Got frustrated so put back together.
Any info will help, actually not complicated at all.
Just has its quarks!
Tomorrow is another day.
Sorry Schrack. It was so long ago I don't remember and the reel's about 3000 miles away on the mainland. I left the rotor assembly intact, but can only tell from the pictures I saved. One thing I disliked was the plastic spool bushing---mine was cracked. Liked the big main gear though. The pinion is kinda large and the gear ratio is still less than 4:1. Can you do pictures?

Without that special tool, made solely for the service techs, you can't get the rotor off, so forget about that part of disassembly or you'll ruin the reel.
Hi Schrack, as you go, take digital photos, step by step, you should be good, we have our money on you, sure you can do it, good luck man, cheers Don.
If I can't get bail off reel can' t be repaired.
What can I use?
Pin has threads right.
So I should have something that will work 12 point small socket!
Now does this go left to loosen?
I don't want to break it.
Reel is not complicated just differant .
Well finally got apart, now big problem, looks like a double spring both held in with one screw.
One spring goes thru and holds bail, that one is broke.
Other one goes under, have not figured out what it does?
Set up is different from 1/2 bail.
Think this has potential for lamp.
Took a break from babysitting bad guys this week, will work on reel and figure it out.
Well Reel is operating fine have everything fixed but bail.
The Spring and set up are really different on model 4' s.
Looks like a double spring that is guided into slots and holes, which lock and release bail.
The Spinster is a little like Mitchell set up, utilize one spring on inside of spool housing can make them.
, no problem.
Does anyone have any info on Master Reel Model 4?
The Spinster I just received is like new inside and out even lived is still stiff to use.
I know eventually I will figure these out.
Thanks for all Help and info so far.
From looks I would say Model 4 Master Reel has bail issues.
Does anyone have pictures (or can take pictures) of the "special tool"?
Need photo or some kind of blueprint for Master Reel bail spring set up.
Small needle nose vise grips will get it out, just put pressure on it and turn counter clock wise.
Also small 12 pointed socket would work.
Well received another model 4, sad to say spring was missing from reel.
Did see how the crazy thing works, but need to see actual spring in one piece.
Does anyone have a photo or schematic of Master Reel Model 4 (full bail).
Seems like the spring was down fall of that model.
Have tool to make springs once I figure it out.
The Spinster which I have 2 that function, seem to be a super reel.
Springs in those I can make.
Sometimes I wish people would not give me stuff! Becomes a quest to repair And get working.
Hey I am slot ahead on this project and am sure I will Prevail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Cool! Stamina baby!
Maybe 2/3 of my initial failures have been overcome by leaving it for a bit, doing some thinking and then returning to it and trying something new. Sometimes I succeed and don't know exactly which thing I did worked; "brute force and/or ignorance". The other 1/3 become part reels.
Your Masterreel just isn't that common which makes it a real challenge.
Some of those Airex are similar to Roddy or visa /versa
Here is a link to some Schematics of the Rody's archived on Fishing Talks Blog I found MIGHT shed some light on that SPRING .
LOOKY HERE (https://www.fishingtalks.com/roddy-reel-schematics-16443.html#comment-8570)
Scroll to top of page I linked to .
I have several of those Reels but danged if I can find them lately .

I acquired a Mastereel Model 4 full-bail and the spring was mangled. I flatten it out but I haven't been able to determine how it goes back in or if it requires any bends.
IS this what you are looking for?

Thank you Sandman for the schematic, it is helpful.
Because the Bail Roller Cap (330-65) was broken and the Roller-Bail (330-62) and Spring (311-30) were missing, I decided to make a manual pickup (PUM) for this reel.
It's not worth the effort to me to restore this reel -- it being plastic with the spool chrome flaking off and these issues. If I can make a PUM work, it can be bank fishing reel.

Good deal JT.
I posted the entire Airex Instruction manual on the site.
Just type "Airex" in the search function and you will see it.
Good luck!

I was out in the shop and had a look through some parts boxes (I only have 2 shoe boxes) and found an old reel bail which was rusty but looked like it could work.
I cut the piece off that I thought I could use from the bail wire (remaining bail wire in first picture), buffed off the rust did a little work on cleaning up the point and attached it as shown in the photos.
I think this will work just fine for fishing from the water's edge.
