Title: squidder mod using daiwa 50H main and pinion gears
Post by: Wilmar on May 18, 2021, 04:06:31 PM
Hey all,
I'm in Florida on vacation.  Fellow at local tackle shop was telling me you can put the main and pinion gears from a daiwa 50H into a squidder.  The fellow was from long Island, and said that he learned it from just a couple of fisherman up there.  Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Wow, hope it is true.   That would make a 4.2:1 Squidder!

Would love to hear and see more about this

Interesting. I may need to raid Alan's stash of Daiwa parts to see if he has this combination.

It would have to be the same size gears in order to work on the Squidder bridge...the spacing of the main and pinion that is. It's hard to believe that as bad as everyone wants a faster Squidder, this hasn't come up sooner. I wish I had a 50H to find out if it works. Somebody that has the required parts needs to jump on this and find out if its true. 8)

I eyeballed last night....  Found a pinion and main marked "Sealine 50H" in my box that I purchased a few months ago.   The 50H main is way bigger (diameter and height) than the Squidder one.  There is no way it would fit into the side plate.   When I have more time, I try to post pics.

Yes, as Mo said, all the world wants a faster Squidder... I found one Pro Gear 251 recenty scored on eB... ;D

If you want a faster Squidder just get a Newell 2xx or a Pro Gear 25x.  Faster gears and Jigmaster sized drags... they're Magnums!

Way to go Decker, i saw that one and hoped it went to someone who really appeciates good reels. Glad to see you got it. I already have a 251 and decided to pass on it, then a CS600 came up a week later and i had to make it mine. Pro Gears are awesome. (Sorry to hijack the thread)

The wide and not-very-tall frame of the squidder and other classic surf reels was for casting ergonomics but, in a way, it was also their downfall.  You cannot make the main gear diameter any larger without increasing the overall reel diameter and you cannot make the pinion diameter any smaller because it would not have enough strength.  The ring around the pinion helped, but could only do so much.  The modern-day solution is the drop-down gear box that makes space for a larger main gear diameter and a strong pinion.

Thread hi-jacking is par for the course around here, Rogan. ;D  My first PG, and I'm looking forward to casting it soon.

To get back to the original thread subject...  For the reasons that Steve (OC1) said, Sealine 50H gears in a stock Squidder is a no-go.  Still pondering what the grain of truth here might be.

Could it be possible that the guy meant a sealine 30h? As that is a smaller version of the old sealine series.

Yeah, just to tie this thread up, I tried to go back and clarify with the guy at the tackle shop but he was off work.  I have no idea what he meant or if I just got confused.
