Post by: Paolo on May 21, 2021, 04:31:05 PM
Someone have an idea which rod is suitable for penn spinfisher vi 40lb of drag. My budget is $100 for the rod. I can do a custom rod also but i dont know where to get blanks for this rod for under $50. Really appreciate your help.

What type of fishing will you be doing?  Surf, popper,..?

I don't think a sub-$100 rod exists that will deal with 40lb of drag without exploding in your face or having components fail. Or at least, not one that is a practical fishing rod.

As fine a reel as they are, I don't think you can get 40 pounds of drag out of a Spinfisher VI.  Maybe 10 to 15 lbs.

What type of fishing? Surf casting, reef fishing from boat, jigging...

Type of fishing is needed to suggest a rod.

For a heavy rod in that price range, that is new, I would think it would be hard to beat an UglyStik.

Although if you aren't going to be casting with it I would keep in eye out on Offerup/Craigslist/Facebook for any old glass rods. Usually heavy glass rods that are under 7' don't sell for a lot.

EDIT: I forgot we are talking about a spinning setup. Not many heavy glass spinning setups around. I would check out UglyStik specs.

It's always nice to have a long rod when surf fishing, even if you are not casting.  Getting your line above the water surface a few extra feet makes a huge difference when there are wavelets.  I do all of my rod shopping on ebay.

What Steve said. Also get it over people's heads as they walk by. I've clotheslined a few people in the past.

I just looked. Thought I had a fiberglass rod that would have worked for you. Not sure what happened with that one.  Anywhoo agreeing with what's all ready been said, The Spinfishers have been pretty good reels but none have the anti reverse or beef to make 40 lbs. of drag & last for any length of time. Dont believe I'd fish more than 50 line on any of Spinfishers.

With your budget of $100 I would hit the pawn shops. I could be considered a Rod Snob. While I have 4 Ugly Sticks that at some point get used every year. They come with me when I fish specific areas. Later in the year there is a spot I cant boat to & hike in. There's a 12' fence I have to cross to get to my spot on the river. With no reels on the rods & no worries I simply toss them over.

I do believe with some patience & time you can do better than an Ugly Stick & stay within your budget ... Jeff

40# drag is a fantasy; sustained 30# would be enough to drag most people off the beach/boat
I couldn't handle it, but I'm pretty sure my Ugly 12' H Surf could
huge beefy Fuji Hardloy guides; 12-40# line; no lure rating on rod -- vaguely recall 2-12 oz. in catalogs
(or maybe, 2-12 oz. was Surf Casting & Surf Spinning was 2-8 oz.)
there was XH Surf Casting for up to 24 oz. -- not sure about Spinning
