Title: Sal
Post by: Bill B on September 28, 2021, 04:25:02 AM
I'm jumping the gun a little, as I haven't spoke with Alan, but October 9th is the 1 year anniversary of Sal's passing.  We will be in the middle of our trip but I think it is fitting to spend a few minutes and honor Sal, a friend, mentor, and inventor that we all have benefited from.   I would like to take a minute to say a few words and make an offering to the Alto Mare (High Seas in Italian).  Would anyone have an objection?

In my old job we all had a brass key chit (think like a quarter size coin) with our names stamped on it.  We would leave these on the casket of a fallen warrior.  Maybe bring something like that along to offer to the seas.  And maybe a gallon of Dago Red to toast afterwards.   I'm open to ideas, and have Chief (USN retired) Ron Jones working on a few words to say.

Bill

And if you would like to send a token pm me for instructions and I will ensure it is donated with mine.

I'm the old school single-speed guy on these trips, so I'd be more than happy to fish the TANK in Sal's honor.

If nothing else, I'll try to land tunas on my Monofil 27 and Mag Power 970 in his honor.

Sal loved Magpowers. He sent me a 970 plate he double-dogged and I plan to try to fish it if I can build the reel before  I go to OBX next month. I have a 980 as one of my standard drum reels in any case.

It just so happens that Bill is planning to come by and see me to pick up a few "necessary" items for the trip, and The Tank is sitting on my workbench as well and is ready to rock and roll! - john

Assuming the boat has room, I think it would be most appropriate. I can reach out and see if I can get a plaque, otherwise I'll get one made.

There is a lot of symbolism in this, it is important to do it right.

http://lanesboroamericanlegion.org/pow-mia-table-setting.html

I will get the plack and the Bible. I will also modify the presentation to be more Sal centric and less about combat, which I feel is appropriate.

I accidently posted on another thread but deleted it but if you guys can video your tribute to Sal and send it to Cathy, I am sure that she would appreciate it.
If you do it early enough in the morning, she may be able to share it with people during the memorial service. Just a thought.

Great! I feel a whole lot better knowing the Tank isn't being sent through a shipping service given the horror stories these days.

Had 100 braid with about 100# mono topshot when I used it last, but that was a couple years ago. Dunno if ot's been changed out so John or Dominick will weigh in.

Wai, fyi, it's a YTS width- but Dommie has caught marlin with it in Mexico and I think Chris got a sword in NZ.

I'll bring the hollow core spools for a splice connection up to 100 lbs. Sal, in the official Tank thread, stated 25 lbs drag multiple times.

The Tank has 80lb braid with 50lb topshot.  If anyone thinks it should be changed, let's discuss it.  Dominick

I think it is solid.  Alan loaded it up.  Maybe he remembers.  Dominick

If solid, I can use a section of 100 lb hollow for the connection, and perhaps do an end loop on the tag end. Or, just tie a Bimini Twist Loop with the solid.

Can then make three wind-ons in 50, 60, and 80 lb, so anyone wanting to fish the Tank in one of those weights can switch out as needed...

Dominick - No need to $hip - Bill is stopping by my house tomorrow (Friday) to pick up a few necessary items and he can bring it to the boat.  Maybe Alan or one of the guys living up by you can bring it back up to it's caretaker?  I can't thank you enough I tell you it was a blast to fish on the RP 8 day for Yellowtail and was a real conversation starter. - john

Hollow core end loops for the wind-ons completed.

The 80 lb (right) is ready--just need decide the length of mono and snip off leader spool. The 50 and 60 (left) just need their mono inserted...may do that while we're outbound.

Mission successful......met up with John (Brewcrafter) and took possession of the Tank, and 5, errrrr, I mean 4 cases of donations for the trip.....or was that 3 cases ?    Anyway thank you John for the BJ's brewery donation, I'm sure it won't last long.  Also went through my terminal tackle with John and filled in a few blank spaces.  Thank you so much John!

Also does anyone know where the Tank Logbook is?  John did not receive it when he picked up the tank.  Maybe we can have it overnighted to a member going on the trip.

The Tank seems to have 80 lb mono top shot, according to the micrometer.

Wai.....any tips on remembering to bring the reel bag along on the trip? 😆😆😆

Me again....I just went through the Tank making sure all the external screws were tight and discovered one of the upper bridge screws is stripped.....the screw that has the partial threads and goes through the yoke.....I would replace it but have none in stock.  Does anyone have an extra? Otherwise I can pull one from another reel.

Call Save-On Tackle in Santa Fe Springs...unless there is a repair shop closer to you with screw in stock.

Last chance would be Squidco when they open up Tues at 8AM before we board.

Man I sure hope I am WRONG but it looks like the screw pulled some thread out of the plate when you blow it up  and you will need another plate and a screw .
Title: Re: Sal
Post by: Bill B on October 04, 2021, 03:29:10 AM
I think you are right....I should have looked closer and tried a different screw....Bill

Post by: Wompus Cat on October 04, 2021, 03:36:27 AM
Well what you can do if the threads are messed up on the plate is just use some Elmers glue on the end of it  and stick it back and it will be good to be shown for the Memorial then repair it later . If you don't have a new plate to use now and or time .

I will make a quick swap tomorrow and get the Tank back on track.  I feel like a noob for not looking closer and catching that.  Guess if I tried swapping out the screw I would have found it.  Bill

Down to the wire, but I also have a factory 113H bridge if you want to grab it on your way down, or on your way back through town. - john

Unless Dominick finally got it and didn't mention, the Log may belong to USPS. I sent it back to him last I had it but I don't think it got there.

My vote for pic of the month- the Tank matches Billy's beer.

The Bridge Plate is the Same Dual Dog or Not on the 113 . It is the Side plate where the Dog fits in that is different .
Sal Modified the Plate to accommodate Dual Dogs and put it in a thread quite some time ago .
The Newer versions of the Side plate has the Cut out in them for dual Dogs .
I will link the thread when I find it . Beautiful work he did  on this .

Crisis adverted.....opened the Tank and found a stainless steel double dog bridge.  The original brass screw WAS stripped.  Replaced it and we are back in business.  Bill

Man that is Great News .
Plus did not know they had a dual Dog bridge assembly  for the 113 ?????  Or maybe I did and am thinking about the 114 6/0 I built.

Makes it EASY to service with them self contained like that

I believe it's a PC DD bridge like the jigmasters. Careful- it's 113H, not 113. Won't fit the 113 with smaller gear train.
