$1150 plus 15% because I always collect the tip ahead of time.  You also have to figure it travel,  the beer tab, meals on land, tackle and fish processing.

gentlemen, welcome and thank you very much for signing up for this trip.  if you have been following the san diego reports, you know that they have been catching bluefin and that they have been getting bigger.  this bodes well for us!  many of you have done these short range bluefin trips many times before and know what to expect.  and many have not.  what i would like to do is go over everything from where to stay on arrival to how to get your fish processed before departure.

1. Passports and licenses - everyone must have a current passport, and i believe that all of you do.  we will most likely need california fishing licenses.  for most of us that live in california, make sure that your california license has an ocean enhancement stamp on it.  licenses for short term or out of state people can be purchased at the landing.  so far, the boats are fishing in US waters.  if we have to go to mexico, then a passport and mexican license will be needed.  you will already have your passport.  the landing will get mexican licenses for us.

2. Arrival in San Diego - most of us will be arriving the day before.  there are two hotels at the landing.  one is the old vagabond, now called the sea harbor hotel, on scott street.  https://www.seaharborhotel.com/  the other is the ramada on 1403 Rosecrans St, San Diego.  both places are dumps, but for one night they're fine.  if you don't have a traveling buddy already, check the list and see who lives close to you and send them an email or text.  you might be able to travel together and save some money.  we usually gather at miguel's cocina on scott street the night before.  drinks at 5pm, dinner at 6.

3. Rods and reels - i highly recommend two speed lever drag reels only, avoid single speed lever drag and star drag reels if you can.  lighter reels should be loaded with braid and fluorocarbon leaders.  for heavier rigs, braid and mono might do quite well so that you can avoid the high cost of fluorocarbon.

here you will get as many recommendations as there are people to voice them.  judging by the way fishing has been, i would definitely recommend three rods and reels - a 30 pound outfit, then a 40 to 50 pound outfit, and finally a 60 to 80 pound outfit.  if you have something in a 100 to 130 pound range, that's fine.  so, basically 3 rods and 3 reels is all you might need for a trip like this.  set the drags with a scale to give you 30% of your topshot line weight at strike.  as an example, a 50 pound rig would be set to 15 pounds of drag at strike.  then push the reel to full and see what kind of drag you get at full.  that way you know. just in case you hook into something big.  if you are going to need help with gear, please let me know.

4. Hooks - for bluefin, i would recommend ringed owner circle hooks in 2/0, 4/0 and 6/0 sizes. pocket packs of six to eight hooks in these sizes should be fine.  you could even go with 1/0, 3/0 and 5/0.  it's just not necessary to have every size.  https://www.ringedhooks.com/products/owner-mutu-circle-ringed-hooks.html

an assortment of small j-hooks is also good, maybe in #4, #1 and #2/0.  maybe pocket packs of six to eight count pack of these as well.  https://www.ringedhooks.com/products/owner-flyliner-live-bait-ringed-hooks.html

you really don't need that much.  and if you run out of hooks, you've had a fabulous trip!!!!!

5.  Jigs - these are more to catch anglers than fish, but they do work.  sometimes these fish will only bite the smaller colt snipers.  https://www.amazon.com/Shimano-Current-Sniper-Fishing-Lures/dp/B07GTDSQFW

james kikkawa has a really nice line of the 100 to 300 gram larger knife jigs.  you can reach him at (626) 988-3632  or  on Instagram @jameskikkawa or @westcoastjiggerz or Facebook James Kikkawa.  he's a smart kid and really keeps track of what's biting, so he's a good one to talk to.

and lastly, there are the monster knife jigs and flat falls that go up to 500 grams in weight.  right now, the fish are smaller, but you never know when these larger fish that eat these larger jigs will come through.  check with james, but you might have to go with amazon.

6. sinkers - we might use sinker rigs, which involves a live bait on a mono or fluoro leader and an 8, 10, 12 or 16 ounce torpedo sinker that is rubber banded 15 to 20 feet above the bait.  a #64 size rubber band works great for this application.

7. troll/kite rotation - for trolling and kite/balloon fishing, the boat will have gear, so you don't have to worry.  if you have a 100 to 130 pound line class rod and reel, feel free to bring it.  we will likely not be trolling much, but we should be running a kite or balloon and there will be a rotation.  random numbers will be drawn to pick the order for that.

8. Boarding the boat - we'll have breakfast at the denny's on rosecrans first thing in the morning.  i'll need everyone there by 9am.  we will board somewhere between 10 and 11am.  cabins will be assigned.  so will rod storage, port and starboard.  tackle box storage will not be pre-assigned, but you will not be needing a full long range tackle box, anyway.  everything you need for tackle should fit in a shoe box.  it's only a 3 day trip.

9. Fish processing - we have reservations with Fisherman's processing (619) 255-3128 for our return date, June 17th.  the price is now up to $1.50 per pound of whole fish.  you will need to call them and confirm. i generally go for 5 mil bags, 1 pound packs, bellies, collars and same day service.  we will try to get back to the dock ahead of the other boats.   once docked, we will need some serious hustle to get gear off the boat.  then we have to get fish off the boat, up to the sidewalk and to the processor.  there may be other processing companies at the dock.  you can certainly book with someone else if you wish to, but you absolutely must make a reservation ahead of time.  Five Star is at (888) 253-9692 and Sportsmen's Seafood (619) 224-3551.

breakfast will be a perry's cafe while we wait for fish.  perry's is right across the street from fisherman's processing.

10. Things to do now - if you are looking for someone to travel with or split a room at a hotel with, check the list below, see where people live and get in contact. book a hotel now if you need one. i will be checking in and talking to all of you later as well to see where everyone is with that.  also, figure out if you need same day fish processing and contact fisherman's processing or one of other two companies and get a reservation in.  getting fish done the same day is always stressful.  there might be shipping options or late pick up options, but none of these is easy or cheap.

that's is for now.  i'm certain that there will be more later.  thanks!  alan

Just made reservations with Mario's Fish Processing.  Heard from another member that they did a good job his last trip.  Of course they are the other way from Fisherman's Processing but it won't keep me from breakfast at Perry's.

Good morning gentleman a newbie here I hope I do not hijack This Thread I just would love to ask a few questions.

First off this sounds like an awesome trip I've been watching Alan Tani's website for several years and I love it Alan is very knowledgeable man and a true asset to the fishing world thank you Alan Tani.

I'm the kind of guy that goes on 2 day trips occasional five day trips and a yearly 10-day trip some guys look at my equipment and kind of scuffle and laugh at me because I generally just bring 2 travel rods 1 maybe two one piece rods and a little bigger than a shoe box for equipment sometimes I might go to a pelican laptop case that's about as big as I bring for gear.

Through the years like most I have switched from star Drag reels to lever drag reels with the exception of three small reels that I still love that are Star drag other than that everything else is a lever drag reel.

My question is since this is a nice small party boat that most of you have been going on year after year I'm curious of what type of gear that you guys bring on your 3-day trip? Just rod and reel combinations like Alan said you only need to bring 3.

My question is because even when I go on a 10-day trip I only brought 5 reels and 4 rods. I have more sitting at home hanging on the wall for beautiful artwork then I actually take on a fishing trip for 10 days I'm a minimalist that's why I'm asking the question. When I travel to Cabo my friend has a boat and I literally go down there with a pelican case that's about 36L X 14W X 5H this case packed with all my travel rods all my fishing gear and reels included and one other check in luggage for clothes I have two one piece Rods that I keep in Cabo.

Thank you everyone good luck on your trip tight lines.  Again I hope I do not hijack this post.

Thanks All
Anthony

Questions are never "hijacking".

I try to minimize my rods but usual bring 9-10 on a 8-10 day trip.  For this trip, unless large fish show up, I am bringing a 25#, 30#, 40#, 60# and a 80#.  I am also bringing gear for my son but he will not have a 25#, unless he steals mine.  All but 1 will be lever drag but I might decide to leave the star drag home between now and mid June.

PS Ignore the tackle whores giving you odd looks on your 10 day trips, use what you are comfortable with and have fun.

Anthony you posed very interesting questions....I try to be a minimalist but I tend to bring the same amount of set ups and tackle whether it's a 1.5 day or 3 day which is the longest trip i've done.

I'm not on the June trip but I am on the July 3 day and I'll bring my "normal" set ups. I bring 30, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 50/60 spinner.

I'm new to the longer trips, 1 3 day and 1 8 day, last year.  I borrowed a trolling rig and used the boats kite rig.  I used a Fathom25NLD2, Fathom 40NLD2, and Baja Special for most of my fishing.  I had a couple back up star drags that were rarely used.  For tackle I took the "Kitchen Sink" and what I ended up using would have fit in a shoe box.  Hooks, sinkers, leader, and a handful of irons.  Take what you are comfortable with.  No need to bring a Tackle Store with you.  Bill

That's Right!  Thanks to the generosity of Bryan and you only used maybe 3 of my hooks and the rest were the Mustad Demons.  Still have a box that you gave me and enough to last me 4 more trips!

That's what is so special about Alan's charters.  With this group you could literally board with a duffel bag and shaving kit and have enough tackle to borrow you could fish a 2 different rigs each day and never fish the same rig twice.

I've been reading the long range reports and it seems that the larger grade BF's are becoming more common in the reports.  My biggest outfit is a Fathom 40NLD2 with 80# top shot.  Will this be enough?  Unless I unleash a Penn 9/0 or a 114HLW.  Bill

Bill seeing as how you're doing more and more SD trips I'd invest in a 100# setup of your own....

I went Mak 16SEa with 100# braid on a PCH 741xxxh as mine

Bill-

What Lee & PJ said. Either borrowed or bought, the 100#+ outfit has become the standard for nite dropping for bigger bft. I would suggest a 20 size reel & a rail rod rated up to 130#. Mak20/Axis720x3h/120# braid/100#mono topshot works for me.  Your FTH40NLD2 w/80# will work in a pinch (also as a heavy daytime setup) but Boat crews really like to see heavy gear in the dark to get fish up before "everyone gets involved" lol.

I was scrambeling to get a 80/100 pound reel for my son to use and a friend offered me a killer deal on a 16VISX that I could not pass on.  It is at Alan's now getting tuned.

Bill you can go with a 16 or 20 sized reel depending on what you can find in stock!

I have a Mak 16 and a 20, both SEa.  The 16 has 80# topshot and the 20 has 100#.  I think I'll jig with the HXW w/100#... I got a 128# BFT on it last year.

I will be bringing the following:

Fathom 25NLD2/ PCH 701 for 30# flyline
Baja Special/ Californian for 50# jigging for yellowtail
Fathom 40NLD2/ PCH 741 for 80# jigging and sinker rigs

But I have a feeling the Fathoms will get the most use.

Yup, tying up loose ends and packing gear now.   Next week I am installing a second fuel tank to avoid CA diesel prices as much as possible.   Diesel is "only" $5.45 a gallon here.

THe fish were big Memorial day weekend! I went 2 out of 4. I got a 25# and a 80-90#. At one point we went looking for smaller fish that we could actually handle... it didn't work, we kept finding big ones! A sinker rig worked best during the day, jigs at night.

THe 2 I lost were much bigger ones. I had one ready for the gaff when the line broke after having rubbed on the hull that probably went 150. I was fishing 60 on that one. I had another one on that decided he didn't want to play anymore and just took off for the horizon... he chewed off my 80# fluoro after ripping off 450yds of 80#!  The biggest landed on the boat was about 200, another 185, and a few over 100#.

I was on the Liberty the past weekend and pretty much replicated Mark's trip. Got 3 cookie cutters (75-80#) on the sinker rig during the day. Got chewed off on my last hookup after 1.5 h - weak link was my 60# fluoro leader. The serious jiggers (not me) did well on 300-400g knife jigs (KB blue/chrome & blue/pink). Fish up to 170# for our group with half being nicer grade (> 70#).

Got skunked on the Intrepid 3-d 2 weeks ago after the week-long wind event scattered the fish but pretty much same story (daytime sinker; nightime jigging) for those who caught.

Good luck on your trip. Will be out there on another boat that week.

Oh yeah, bait were decent 5-6" sardines over the weekend; alot better than 2 weeks ago.  You can check on bait size on Everingham Bros Facebook page (usually updated daily or close to).

I'm new to fishing the sinker rig and was hoping someone might answer a couple questions....

How do you hook the bait? Through the nose or up through the lower and top jaw?

How slow do you drop the bait to ensure it doesn't wrap up on itself?

Once in the zone to you just hold the bait there or do you constantly lower and reel up the bait?

Thanks
PJ

You hook the Sardine sideways through the nose. I just drop it down until I figure it's in the zone.  I advance the lever  enough to keep the sinker from pulling line.  I let it sit for a little so let the Sardine drift back.  I put it in low and retrieve slowly.  It's easier to go slow in low!  When I feel it get picked up I advance the drag enough to set the hook and when it starts taking drag I advance to strike. I use a bigger hook than I would for flylining since the bait isn't having to drag the hook around.  One of the guys was using a #2 circle since that's what was recommended for flylining and pulled the hook several times.  He got one after I told him to use a bigger hook!

When fish are being marked under the boat, keep your line vertical as much as possible. A fast drop to zone followed by the slow feeding/retrieve is standard. You can/will get hit both going & coming.

Select/adjust weight based on drift/current/depth fish are being marked. secure the lead "in line" to reduce tangling.

If fish are keeping their distance (or when drifting away from the pens), a slower sink Carolina rig may be the ticket. Just place the egg/keeper above leader knot. I've seen this rig catch when heavier sinkers weren't.

When bit, no need to rush - a gradual drag advance to strike/full will work fine. When retrieving, stay in hi gear or be ready to switch quickly if the beast rushes you.

The 420g Nomad Streaker has worked for me!  I have the silver/glow and red/glow.  I got one on the silver/glow, I didn't use the red/glow.

I think the knife jigs work better with current and fish down 300+'.  I'd think a ff would scope out and never get down.

Aiala this is from page 2 referencing jigs....Call James he should have what you need

Go big or stay home... or drink beer and watch others score!

For me:
60#  Mak 15T SEa/PCH-C-741XXH
60#  HX Raptor/UC RGP Terminator
80#  Mak 16 SEa/UC Centaur 76
100# HXW Raptor/PCH-C-741XXXH

For Bill:
100# Mak 20 SEa/UC Viper 76

I think we're good. I didn't take multiple 60's or the 80 on my last trip but should've and left the 30/40 rigs at home!
I can bring my rigging stuff too in case Lee left something at home! My Sato Pro kit and my 3 regular crimpers (2x Nicopress + Edgeworld), crimps, springs, rings, swivels, split rings, etc.

I have 92 gallons of $6.05 a gallon diesel on board, I have been tinkering with fuel economy and got 22.5mpg (a 2000 F250 with 350,000 miles on a 7.3) in 120 miles of mostly flat highway driving. I should have enough fuel to make the round trip without paying CA prices

Damn Lee, and I was upset I have to put 12 gallons of diesel at $6.79 in my VW New Beetle to make the round trip from Crestline to SD. It gets about 42 mpg and was my 100 mile a day commuter to Chino and back. Of course my VW would fit in the back of your truck. Hey maybe you stop by and we can toss it in the back 🤣🤣🤣🤣.

Lee,

Take the 30#. If the rec of 3-4 rods is followed, then there will be plenty of rack space for your 30# rod. At worse the 30# reel stays below deck in your stateroom.

Wai, I must confess to owning several 2-speeds (appreciate the geezer-friendly low gear) but still love old-school the best... A couple of years back I managed to catch a 48lb Guadalupe YT on my old restored 114H, and it doesn't get much better than that.  8)

And speaking of old school, I can't make up my mind which of these beloved venerable classics to take on my upcoming 8-day for some light-line (30lb) fun: Original Penn 750SS, Mitchell Garcia 402, or tough-as-nails Penn 704...

Don't forget your split cane rods. You aren't putting them on some graphite composite rod right? 'cuz that would be sacrilegious!  I guess you could get away with a solid fiberglass rod if you had to.

Wai, I'm taking 7 conventionals, and only have room for one more reel in my bag... At the moment, I'm inclining toward the 704.

Mark, I can't remember if I've ever seen a split-cane rod, let alone owned one. And all my rods are old-school glass; to me, graphite composite is on the space shuttle or whatever, and I am much too old to change.  ^-^

BTW, I've only ever fished mono on a spinner. Can it work with braid (and mono topshot)?

I actually have a split cane fly rod! All my saltwater spinners (baitcasters too) are loaded with spectra with a 4' leader. Straight mono is so last millennium! However, I suspect that some of those older reels wouldn't do well with spectra, the really old ones even have issues with mono. I have 2 speeds starting at 30#. You don't (shouldn't) need a 2 speed for 30# but it has 6:1 in high and 4:1 in low so even in low it's faster than a Squidder... with much better drags!

Oh, Aiala, where there's the will, there's a way. I'm sure you'll work things out.

All of my spinners are braid main to mono top shot. The heavy offshore spinners 25lb - 100lb are configured with solid braid to hollow core connector to mono top shot using nail knots/nubs.

But speaking of last millennium, back in the nineties at some point, that good ol' 750SS (filled with straight Ande mono) landed a 50lb YFT on the SUPREME! Stubbornly old-school, sure, but provably doable!

Perhaps I'll try filling with half braid, half mono...  :)

And Wai, I don't own any of these modern mega-costly super-duper heavy-duty spinning reels, just my golden oldies. I can't imagine landing a cow on a coffee grinder, but I'm sure it's been done... I wonder if any of the fellas will be using spinners on the SOA?  ???

There were a few coffee grinders used for jigging on my 2 1/2 day over Memorial Day weekend. Nothing was hooked and I think they were better off that way.  Ya know, catching a good tuna on a spinner is something that everyone should do... once!  One  guy caught a 80-90# BFT on a 9' rod and a Trinidad 30. It took a long time and he had to hand it off to a deckhand to finish it off. I caught a similar fish on an HX Raptor w/60# on a UC RGP Terminator and was able to watch the 2nd half of his fight. I do have 2 Saragosa's (6k & 10k) a TwinPower 14k and a Mak 20k.

What does 50/50 work out to for the mono?

The Quantum Cabo 120 (~$150 via fleaBay) has 380yds (?) + 20 yds mono top shot. Short for cows but can't control what will bite.

They probably have not produced and maintained a state of the art website because they are fishermen and not webmasters, and they devote all of their energies and resources towards the boat, their customers and catching fish.  They haven't seemed to have had a problem keeping the boat booked, so they must be doing something right.

Quick report, with more to follow:

23 anglers on the boat, 12 bluefin caught by 10 fishermen.  10 were well over the century mark, almost cookie cutter 150 pounders.  One 40 pounder and one 20 pounder. Roy Qi caught 20 and a 160(?).  As Mark said I caught two, nearly identical.  They were 140 and 141, gilled and gutted, adding 10% makes them 154 and 155.  Weather was great, seas were great, food was great, boat was great, sardines were big and lively, crew was outstanding, fishing well...not so great.  Stay tuned for more to follow.  Bill

Beggin' your pardon, Maestro Randy, but ALL of the long-range boats are booked solid through Christmas, and many of them have perfectly fine websites which do NOT include fish counts from 20 years past: RP, Star, Searcher, Indy, Supreme, Intrepid, etc...  ::)

Post by: Bill B on June 18, 2022, 12:12:22 AM
I'm sure there will be more complete reports coming. We all met at the landing around 0800 hrs and off to Dennys for breakfast.  Let me back up most drove/flew in the day before and the rest maybe 3 drove in that morning.  Parking at the lot is pretty simple, go to the machine, punch a few buttons insert your credit card and pay for the days you will be there.  Parking lot had quite a few open spots.  I ended up parking near Mark T. And Warren.

After breakfast we loaded the carts and by 0900 hrs were headed down to the boat.  The load out to the boat went smoothly, rods were racked and reels loaded.  Around 1030 hrs we were off the the bait tanks.  The SOA had some leftover bait from the previous trip.  Captain Evan Kraft spent some time looking over the tanks and selected a 4 day cure which turned out to be awesome bait.  Big, strong, and fast swimmers.  By 1130 hrs we were off.  The captain came down for the usual safety briefing and gave us the low down on who, what, where, and why.  Things were not looking good.  The bluefin were definitely not on the "chew" but he promised to fish harder than us.  Cool beans I can run with that!

Lunch was a full spread of lunch meats and breads.  So I filled up on carbs and protein.  The brews that John Brewcrafter sent were quickly iced down, thanks John!

We steamed a good pace and found the fleet about 30 miles west of San Diego and I counted 18 boats in view.  Dinner was quickly served about 2030 hrs which consisted of grilled chicken breast with mashed potatoes with mushroom gravy.  😋

As dinner was finishing the boat throttled down and Capt. Kraft started a zigzag pattern.  Over the loud speaker we heard he has a school under the boat.  A mad scramble to the racks and rails ensued.  From below it must have looked like Normandie at D Day with all the jigs dropping from above.  Unfortunately the tuna had better plans and were dug in like an Alabama tick.  No takers.  A few more stops with nothing to show.  By 2300 hrs I was beat, having got up at 0200 hrs that morning to make sure I got to the landing. Remember, "Early is on time, On time is late, and Late is inexcusable." Many continued to fish through the night.

I got up around 0430 hrs to the sound of the boat throttling down, so out of the rack I came, dressed and hit the deck.  I dropped a 340 gram jig a couple time with no takers.  As dawn approached we changed over to sinker rigs and fly lines.  A few were using the new In-Line Singer rig.  More schools later, eyeing breezes, boils, sounder groups, we just couldn't get any schools to stick around.  Around 1000 hrs we had a school around the boat and I heard the captain say over the PA, now pay attention here this may be on the test later, "We have a school around us and looks like a few below us at 200'".

Now I'm not too bright but I do listen sometimes, not often just ask my wife. So I grab my Penn Fathom 40NLD2 with 80# braid and 25 yards of 80# flouro, Okuma PCH 741XXH, 2/0 ringed circle hook, and a traditional 6 oz sinker rig.  I sent it straight down, just as I hit 200' the line began to peel off the Fathom quicker than it was.  C&@# I'm hooked up!  I advance the drag to 20# and then it really takes off!  Ok I got your number how about 25#!  Well I was introduced to Mr. ZingPow.  Ok I just got chewed off, right?  Nope my flouro braid knot parted.  And to be perfectly honest Alan did not tie it, I did.  Ok what to do, I don't have anymore 80#...Lee Keta to the rescue and I had 6' of flouro.  Now doubting my knot skills I found a deckhand to tie on the new leader and hook.

Ok back in business, a new sardine and 6 oz sinker, and back down to the 200' mark.  I didn't have to wait long and a 200' breezer picked up my bait. Now I carefully advance my drag to 15#, not stopping!  How do you like 20#? He's still not impressed.  Well then take this 25#!  That got his attention and really pissed him off.  By this time I'm at the bow next to Alan and I'm seeing the last 1/4 of my spool peeling off.  I ask Alan casually, what kind of knot did he use to tie off the braid to my arbor.  I can't print his words here but I did get his attention.  I then asked for some coaching on this fish.  With Alan's help we boated the fish in 35 minutes with no round the boat trips.  It taped out to 150#.  I'm tapped out, who thought fighting fish was this hard.

I retire for the evening, with a cold beer and hot shower, and a few Advil.  Of course when someone hooks up there is a chorus of "who, what, where, and how".  A couple more 150# class fish came over the rail that night.  It's safe to say this was a sardine sinker rig bite.  A couple schoolies came over on flyline but as far as I know sinker rig was the hot ticket.

Captain Kraft and the crew pulled another all nighter looking for fish, me I was done and headed for the rack.

Vowing I was done with my new personal best fish I elected to pass off my next fish.

The next day I had no pressure on me to catch another fish, but was going to pass off the next fish. Now class do you remember the test question you were briefed on?  Well the call came over the PA and I duly dropped in at the target depth of 180' and just as I thumbed the spool to a stop, I got burned by the line peeling off!  Now trusting my rig I slowly pushed the drag to 25#.  This fish was mean!  Captain Kraft saw me hooked up and pulled tight against the rail and came to assist.

We quickly advanced to the starboard bow where 90% of the fight occurred. We did make a quick trip down the starboard rail, but the fish didn't like the scenery and headed back to the bow.  We hop scotched a couple times over the anchor but settled on the starboard bow rail.  We are now pushing 28# of drag.  I would take 3' of line in low gear the fish would take 5'. We went back and forth a couple times and I finally started making some line.  Did I mention this fish was mean?  Well when we got to the death spirals he decided to wrap up everybody from the bow to the bait tank.  I now had the captain and two deckhands assisting and they cleared all the tangled lines.  Cool beans I'm back in business, we start making line on him again and he decides to wrap up some more lines.  Hey Lee, is that you tangled up again 🤣🤣🤣. Yup he got Lee twice by making those mile wide spirals.  Lee called out to the captain "just cut my line". Thanks Lee!  Lines cleared again we put the coals to this fish.  Back over the anchor to the port bow rail.  Out came the gaffs and the solid thunk of a good shot to the body, quickly followed by two more shots.  This fish was done!  On the deck it taped out to 150# also.  This fish almost beat me.  If not for the excellent work of the crew and the other fisherman it would not have hit the deck.  Thank you!  While the fish was being dressed Alan walks up to me with a shot and as only he can say, "Your timing was off, you should have had it in sooner".  Yup, he was right, I was about 1 second off the swell timing missing 1-2' of line each time.

My goal as to beat my personal best of a 115# bluefin.  I did it!  Oh and my vow to hand off the fish, well when I saw the drag it was pulling I couldn't had that off.

The rest of the night is a little hazy, I do not think anymore fish were boated, but I could be wrong.

In total 12 bluefin were landed, 10 well over the century mark, and 2 schoolies.

On another note, I used Sportmans Fish Processing, also known as Mario's Fish Processing.  They were efficient, quick turn around, and good prices.  I will be using them again in the future.  They had my fish and Warren's fish processed before we finished the mandatory breakfast at Perry's Cafe.

I know others will chime in with their reports.  Here are a couple pictures, well all that i have.  And the fellow in the sweat stain grey t-shirt is me after landing that mean SOB.  Tight Lines everyone.  Bill

925FBD2A-AB43-4328-9C28-00ECEE16DA1E.jpeg Hello, I was fortunate enough to get a spot on the trip.  I was impressed by the knowledge of the group and they are really a pleasant bunch to fish with.  I am returning to the offshore fishing game after a 10 year hiatus.  I got my personal best on Wednesday, with the help of AJ the deckhand.  These fish all had a significant attitude.  After Frank landed a fish on an 80 lb outfit, I figured that my 80/60 sinker rig was too light and cut off a knife jig on one of my 100lb outfits.  Tied my 3/0 Charlie Brown hook directly to my mono top shot.    I got the bite on the starboard side of the boat down by the stern and soon moved to the port corner.  I was fishing 30lbs of drag and the fish had to work to get line.  AJ followed me and did a great job of coaching, I got pretty gassed early, I think part of it was that I had been fishing hard since 2 am.  We took turn winding and following the fish until we finally got up to the starboard bow where the fish tried very hard to rub the line on the boat.  I was getting really beat up and AJ kept the line off the boat.  The beast finally came to gaff, and after walking it down toward the stern, the hands pulled it over the rail as they fell backwards on the deck. My personal best, the fish weighed 158lbs gutted.  Talking with Alan, we estimate that it was 170 +,  truly an epic trip for me and it was great to fish with everyone!

A gilled/gutted/bled fish loses about 12% so a 158# after all that should weight in at 158 / (1 - .12) or 179#!!!!

Warren fished the stealth rig and landed his on it.  Not sure if anyone else did.  But I did see lots of that rigging.

I do have to say everyone on this trip would be the last ones to walk the plank.  Tackle tips easily shared, needed something it was readily available, loaner rigs freely given (Thanks Mark!) .  When a fish was landed everyone was on hand for a high five and a hearty pat on the back.  Hard to beat this group!

Especially on Bill's 2'nd fish that was making huge circles under the boat, almost everyone was out of the water just watching. Any line in the water would go towards the bow and get wrapped up. Lee, although noble, wasn't the only one!

I don't think so, it was hard to tell with so few bites. It seems like daytime sinker rigs, nighttime knife jigs, not much current on this trip, so the heavies weren't necessary. I saw one jig fish.

To answer a few questions, I used a San Diego jam on the 2/0 ringed circle hook, the torpedo sinkers we're 6 oz. 8 oz would have been good also just to get quickly down to the zone.  Only once did I have an issue with the bait tangling.  But then there is no way of knowing on the three fish I hooked up, lost the sinkers on all of them.  I included a photo of the flouro/braid the deckhand tied.  Hopefully someone can identify it.  That same connection caught both fish without re-tying.  I tried using a 340 gram knife jig on 100 lb but had a hard time staying up and down.

A few boats questions for anyone who might wanna answer....

How does the boat drift? Stern or bow first?

How cold were the staterooms? Would just a single blanket keep you warm enough or would you recommend multiple?

Would I be better off brining a water bottle or can I use a 40oz tumbler? Where there cup holders?

What's the tackle station like? Plenty of room for everyone?

I'm sure I'll have more but TIA for the answers....

PJ

Bill, that looks like a uni-uni to me.
I was still scoping out with a 420 gm knife jig.
I have a Rapala line counter rather than marking my line.  Works well!

It seemed that if you went in at the stern you'd eventually end up at the bow.
A single blanket was fine, even then I ended up feeling warm.
I had a water bottle, no cup holders.
Tackle storage was ok, most people didn't go overboard with tons of stuff.

Quote from: Vintage Offshore Tackle on June 18, 2022, 06:27:26 AMGreat job on the 50 lb. Warren!  Was anyone fishing the sinker rig in the dark, and did anyone get bit on it?
I don't think so, it was hard to tell with so few bites. It seems like daytime sinker rigs, nighttime knife jigs, not much current on this trip, so the heavies weren't necessary. I saw one jig fish.

Thank you Warren.  It seems like it would be worth giving it a shot, unless the jigs are getting bit good.

As each trip is different, I took a 20, 40, 50, and 80.  Mark was gracious to loan me a 100#.  I used the 80# the most for sinker rigs.  The 40 was used for flyline and used maybe 6 times and the 100 used for jigs.  So had 5 rigs and used only 3. As Alan said earlier not a lot of tackle needed on these trips and what I used would have fit in an ammo can (a couple jigs, sinkers, leaders, and hooks) We were allotted 5 spots per angler on the racks.  There is plenty of room upstairs but no rod holders.  A milk crate would work great for storage upstairs.  Your mileage may vary.  It's hard to leave the kitchen sink behind.  99% of what I took never left the bag.  Bill

Different spots had more or less current.  I was successful by going to my 100/100 mono top shot  outfit.  I used the normal rubber band method with a 10 oz sinker, and 3/0 ringed Charlie Brown Circle hook.  I was amazed that the hook was perfectly set in the hinge of the fishes' jaw, and looked perfect after landing it.  I had a wind on connection from mono to braid, and a single San Diego jam knot.  Even with 10 ounces there was scope.  The captain said that the fish were showing at 200 ft, I let out to my 250 foot mark and got bit. I used both a 250 gm SK jig and a 320 gm nomad knife jig to no avail.  Seas were pretty good.  My cabin was at the aft bulkhead to the engine room, earplugs made it a bit more comfortable. As far as rods, I took 2 100/100, 1 80/60, 1 65/50, 1 50/30, and a 50/50 spinning rod for popper fishing.  There were a lot of folks that brought scales to check drags, and everyone was really helpful in helping set drags at strike.  We did drop down and fish 30 a time or two, when the captain said he saw small fish on the meter.  When in doubt, just bring some fluorocarbon leader material and use a triple surgeon knot to put a 6' trace leader on .

:d THanks for the intel everyone. I was thinking 5 sticks 100, 80, 60 and two jig sticks for fun with plenty of floro to cover.

How big was the bait?

this is his second fish. bill landed this fish despite everyone's best efforts to saw him off.  there were no less than half a dozen guys that gpt wrapped up with his line.  some guys got caught twice.

you'll see that he has the rod under his belt.  you saw how he had so much more control of the first fish with the rod under his right arm pit.  with this second one, his timing was also a little off, cranking late instead of timing it to get the most line back when the boat came down.  it made for a very long fight.

and he definitely needed more drag.  still, well done!!!! :d

Never a good sign when those clueless anglers need to be told by the skipper..."WIND YOUR LINES IN!!!"
Spirit of Adventure is 88 feet long!...
That fish was being fought in the bow...
Here's a idea ::)  ::)  ::)  ::) ....Fish the stern!!!...Queequeg

The fish was making massive circles under the boat. Dropping in at the stern didn't save you since the lines were drifting towards the bow. I quickly gave up and just watched.

I can say none of these guys were trying to saw me off.  A lot of them offered to cut their lines and to them I'm grateful.  The rest were unwilling participants in the spiderwebs.  The crew did an awesome job clearing the lines.  And when the fish was brought on board most were not fishing, watching the the fish beat me up.  Best I can figure the circles were in excess of 90'.  As seen in the video I tried steering the fish away from large circles but this one had a lot of attitude.  At half spool and 27# of drag (which correlates to 54#, half spool doubles the drag) and it could still pull drag.  Much meaner than the previous.  A lot of times I was just spinning my wheels trying to gain on it.  I could have cut the fight by about 10 minutes if my swell timing was better, but that would have brought a greener fish to gaff.  Lessons learned use the right gear, Marks 100# rig would have been better suited for this particular fish. But on the bright side my braid is well packed down to less than 1/4 spool 😉 Bill

I saw a post on BD showing the bends on several rods.  The Okumas had bends similar to UCs.

Good to see that the 741xxh delivered for you.  Any thoughts you can share about it?  Fishes closer to the low or high end of the rating?

I would say the PCH 741XXH fishes 80# well with drag levels around 25-30#.  My take is this is the upper limit.  It can be pushed above 25#, and if you have watched the video, it will flex all the way into the fore grip.  If I had seen that flex I would have backed off.  During the extreme flex the spool was about 1/3 maybe 1/4 which pushed the drag numbers to 50# or better.  Well above it's fighting class.  It's an 80# rig all day, just need to watch spool height and the drag increase.  JMO.  Hopefully others who were there can chime in.  Bill

Just like most sport boats it drifts stern first. And which side to fish on will depend on the wind. The old saying holds true wind in your face you're at the right place

It seemed that even though you started in the stern you always ended up in the bow, port or starboard depends on the wind.
