There are 3 SOA trips right?  The Bill 3-day, your 3-day, and this 10-day?  Or is there an 8-day as well?  If there is no 8-day, then sign me up for this 10-day.  Will get back to you on the 3-day.

Boo.  Ok.  Just let me know.  I would like to try and make sure I get on at least one trip.  If I get bumped for this trip (the 8-day) I would like to try and do the July 3-day with you.  Just not sure if I can swing both of them yet and I would prefer this trip (the 8-day).

gentlemen, i'm finally getting to the point were we will start collecting checks.  the total cost of the boat ride is $67,110.  divided 24 ways it comes out to $2796.25 per person (or about $350 per day).  with a 15% tip, i'm going to call it $$3216 total.  if you would, please send in a check for half that amount, or $1608.  i will be sending out emails to each of you.  i would like to collect the final check a few months before the trip.

for those on the waiting list, i deeply apologize for the delay.  it's a pretty stable group, but life does happen so spots might open up.  if one does, i will let you all know immediately.  thanks!  alan

Hello Anglers!

Thank you once again for booking with the Spirit of Adventure! The fishing season is quickly approaching so we would like to send out some friendly reminders and information for you to share to better prepare for your upcoming trip.

1.We are currently not requiring COVID testing for trips shorter than 7 days, but this may change at any time. If and when they are required, rapid tests will be available at a small cost dockside. Please board at your own discretion.

2. We ask you still bring your own pillows and blankets for sanitation purposes. A bottom/fitted sheet will still be provided on your mattress. Should you need a pillow and blanket due to travel, please contact us via email: admin@soasportfishing.com. We are following strict sanitation guidelines for the safety of our crew and passengers and our crew is regularly tested regardless of vaccination status.

3. Reminder to bring your own reusable water bottle. The vessel is equipped with a purified water faucet and an ice machine. No water bottles are sold on board. Beer and soda are available for purchase.

4.  For all trips departing at 11:00am, check in will begin at 9:00am. Lunch will be served. For all trips departing at 6:00pm, check in will begin at 4:00pm. A light dinner will be served.

5. California fishing licenses are not included in your trip cost and can be purchased at H&M Landing on the day of departure.

6. Mexican fishing licenses also are not included in your trip cost but will be purchased by our staff on the day of departure.

7. Passports are only required for trips 3 days or more.

8. Outstanding balances are due 2 weeks before trip departure. Please contact our office for any necessary arrangements/considerations.

9. Rods and reels are available for rent at a limited quantity at a rate of $15/day per outfit due at sign-in. If you need to reserve a setup, please contact our office asap.

10. In addition to license and permit costs, we recommend passengers bring cash for the following: jackpot participation, beverage/galley tabs, rental equipment, crew tips/gratuities, and Spirit of Adventure merchandise.

11. A fuel service charge may apply depending on price of diesel at time of departure.

Charter masters, please provide us with your list of anglers as soon as possible so we can update our passenger lists. Please also let us know if you will be needing us to assign bunks or if you will be doing so. If any of the anglers on your trip require special dietary restrictions, let us know in advance in order to properly accommodate their needs.

For additional information regarding your trip, please contact our office via email or phone at admin@soasportfishing.com or (619) 549-8002. For any tackle or equipment related questions, please contact H&M Landing at info@hmlanding.com or (619) 222-1144.

We look forward to a great season!

Thank you,

I know we are still about 7 weeks out.  I checked with the SOA and as of today there will be no CV-19 test required and fuel surcharge will be $20 per day.

As with my old sergeant used to say, "What I'm telling you was true 10 minutes ago and maybe subject to change in the next 30 minutes".  Bill

gentlemen.   i received a call from melanie at fisherman's processing today regarding our reservations.   we will be allotted only five "same day" reservations.

our next option was "next day" service.  melanie tells me that our fish will likely not be ready the next day, but actually the day after.  for the eight of us from the bay area, that means two extra nights in san diego.  that likely will not work.

right now, the plan is for me to drive back to san diego the next week with a u-haul van and all the ice chests, load up the fish and drive back.  this situation might change depending on the amount of fish caught by our boat and others, but i'm thinking that this is the best bet.

i'm not sure if five star (619) 299-9996 or mario's at sportsmen's seafood (619) 224-3551 has any availability this late, but feel free to contact them.

@alantani Thank you.

For water, I'm bringing a 24 reusable aluminum bottles of water and sharpies to mark them so we can reduce the number of cups.  The problem is that the bottles have a small opening so it'll be hard to shove ice in the bottles.  A little cooler that we could fill and put the water bottles in could solve that since the bottles chill pretty fast.

Each bottle is the diameter of a 12 oz can but it's taller, and holds 20 oz of liquid.  I may have a cooler now that I think about it.  Let me check.

My brother Eric had been scheduled to come on the SOA, but his wife took a fall a couple of weeks ago and broke one of her thoracic vertebrae. She's lost feeling and much of the control of one of her legs, and the other is partly numb also. So Eric needs to stay home with his wife to help get the situation stabilized and hopefully get her to start recovering.

Is there anyone who is interested and able to take his place with this late notice?

Drove down to Temecula today to pick up a reel and lend support to Eric. They got bad news... the big C. Hopefully they figure this out and the news gets better when we're at sea.

See ya in 12 hrs.  As Chief Jones would say, 12 hr weapons load out complete and stowed, transportation inspected and ready for movement, transportation pilot ready (wife), international documents stowed, financial arrangements stowed, liquid libations stowed, visual enhancers stowed, communication gear charged and stowed.  10 hrs and a wake up, 2.5 hrs drive and I will be there.  Bill

Great trip. One of the best ever. A few days of tough fishing,  smaller fish, but full limits.

Had a great trip, weather was warm, seas mostly calm, great friends, good drink (Thanks John!), and Capt. Evan Kraft at the helm.  My streak of firsts continued with my first visit to Alijos Rocks and my first wahoo!  With the help of some kindly souls made my limit of yellowtail.  Sheepshead were caught by many, wahoo, trigger fish, sand bass the size Southern California wished they had, bonito and dorado continued their plague at at couple stops.  We stopped at Canales Bay and the yellowtail slaughter was in full swing, dropper loop, flyline, flyline with egg sinkers, irons all caught their share. The boat stopped counting after we hit 250 yellowtails.  The wahoo were a menace at the Rocks continually cutting off hooks, Alan's titanium leader brought my fish to gaff. Ohh yeah almost forgot, someone managed to hook and bring to gaff a striped marlin, but I will let him tell the story 😉 Safe travels to all who are still on the road.  Bill

Had me a large time with some good friends and great fishermen.

Fishing Alijos has been a "bucket list" trip of mine for many many years. I sort of gave up making it there on an 8 day, so I went on the 10 day Grady White SoA trip just last year and we did very well at "the Rocks". Less than a year later, my 2nd trip to the Rocks was on an 8 day.

I've done a dozen 10 days and only one didn't go to the rocks (due to weather). The last few years the sharks (bronze whalers) have been bad at the rocks. The YFT and YT have been better though.

Our overnite at the ridge, Alan, Dave, Ron, and I were on the back of the boat fishing for "whatever".  Dave's flylined sardine got picked up and off to the races, but broke off.  Figuring maybe his knot failed I followed suit, great pick up, good run and broke off 🧐. Ok I'll fix his little rd wagon, tied on a titanium leader... now what you gonna do!  Woohoo, picked up in short order, pulling drag, and pow!  Broke off.  Errrr, now Alan gets involved, rigs a multi strand leader, Dave flylined that,  but no takers.  Now it's late, I'm tired, maybe a few beers, and off to bed.  All the pick ups were just outside the deck lights, but figured it was sharks.  Bill

Anyone remembers what trolling lures were used to catch those wahoos?

On my Excel 10 day I got mine on a Cowbell Jr. Most other troll fish came on DTX minnows. A few on Marauders. Most troll DTX minnows so that's what catches most fish.

Thanks Mark.  I have all the lures you mentioned.  Just wondering if the magbay magtrak is productive.  I was on Alan's last 8-day trip but couldn't recall if the magtrak caught any fish.  I have another 8-day trip at the end of October and look forward to trying different lures for wahoo.

I have the Magtrak too. I don't have anything on it but no one did any better on those trolling rotations!  I'm pretty much all in on Wahoo and have multiple DTX 200 and 220 Minnows (and a couple of 165's), a Magtrak, a Madmac 240, Halco Max 190 and 220, and both sizes of Cowbells. I had one trip where they called me Cowbell Mark 'cuz it got hit every time it got wet. The 32oz is the orange/black and the small 16oz is pink. They both feel the Wahoo love! Dorado, YFT and striped Marlin hit them too.

The micro wahoo was caught on a purple and black Maruder and the other troll caught one on a Tony the Tiger Maruder.

Marauders still work well, especially in the corners. Back when Marauders were the only game in town, no body wanted to be long down the middle... but the Cowbell loves being long down the middle! DTX Minnows like to be long too. Marauders, Magtraks, Madmac's, etc like the short corners better than being long down the middle.

Didn't realize you went to bed. I got one of those three foot bronzies on a dropper loop up to the boat. I've played with stupid little sharks my whole life, there's a knack to it.
