Title: Swap meet find, my first with this variety of Senator ..... Penn 2/0
Post by: cdaline on November 21, 2021, 06:05:08 PM
Yesterday at the Swap I stumbled upon a neglected 2/0. Seemed to
have all the bits .... a little crunchy on retrieve, click was frozen,
quite a bit of "green" on the crossbars, just seemed dried out. Good
news, no missing screws or drags, no cracking of side plates. Seller
wanted $50 I gave $20. Gearing seems pretty hefty for 2/0. Got to
really pay attention to the size of the screws holding the chrome as
they seem dedicated to each location upon reassembly. (on=line
exploded view was necessary) So, degreased, re-greased, oiled,
rubbed, reassembled. Now hums like new. Easy on the eyes. Just
feels like quality.I hold no experience with these smaller Senators
so enjoyed the process. These seem kind of rare for caught in the
wild out here in Arizona. Pretty sure I'm going to keep it. Now to
find a 1/0!  [I'm guessing mid-70's ???].

some photos of the process....

Nice after clean-up. That's a great small ocean-game trolling reel. I have one. What kinda drag washers did it have?
Oh yeah, have some spare parts if you need any.

Thanks guys .... turned out better than I hoped. Drag washers were/are typical ...
I don't know this reels' history, was expecting those thick old asbesto jobs (or whatever
they were made of). I'm guessing someone updated the drag washers at some point.
Thankfully GFish this reel is one of the intact survivors... I think getting some
of the bits for these must be getting pretty tough. I appreciate the offer. As I stated,
just feels like quality. Trolling .... hadn't considered that... nice.

Looks to be early 50's vintage with red handle, parts numbers, and a 3 piece spool.  Nice job, ready to work for more generations.  Most, not all, parts for these little guys, besides the Gfish warehouse #54 complex can be had at Mysticparts.com

Wow Cuttyhunker I would never have thought early 50's based on the
apparently good condition of the reel .... good bones this one. A good
reminder not to be fooled by cosmetics. I thought if I could turn the crank
the reel was salvageable .... turns out the frozen click just needed some
degreaser, and some appreciation with 0000 steel wool. Good stuff ! Can
hardly wait to do the road test !  8)

Now all you need is the 1/0,,, oh yah and the 3/0. Don't forget the 3/0 high speed, oh, and the 4/0 and 4/0 high speed and the 6 and 9 and 10 and,,,,, oh wait, let's find a first gen. Now let's get one in better condition and then we can,,,it really gets worse from there. Welcome to the sickness,, it's GREAT!

Great job you did with the cleanup. This is the model I like the most out of all PENN reels.
I have two of them. One came with a 5 stack drag and the other with 3 asbestos washers.
They both now have 5 stack carbontex drags.
cheers
Greg

You would have to be proud of yourself, for the great job you did on that reel, really brought it back to life, for many more generations.
one thing I would do, with the oils you have in them small container, transfer the contents into a syringe, with a needle on it, then you wont have as much waste, cheers Don.
