Title: What's your best knot for a loop in heavy mono?
Post by: thorhammer on January 22, 2022, 08:47:35 PM
Need to connect 130 mono to bimini loop in braid. Could crimp in a spro but rather not have hardware if I can avoid.

I've used the good old fashioned surgeon's loop for about 40 years. Strongest fish landed was a 15 foot long thresher over 350 pounds. I'd fish it on anything.

Before hollow braid came along I used a bimini to an albright

The heavier the mono, the less likely you are to have trouble with an Albright.  If there is any doubt then just melt a glob on the end of the mono.

The John Collins knot has been good to me, easy to tie on the boat.

Plait or a bimini if it's got to go through (presumably roller) guides.

Crimp if it doesn't.

EDIT: Wait... do you want to be able to loop-to-loop it so you can remove the mono (relatively) easily, or just knot it to the loop in the braid?

EDIT EDIT: If you want to do loop to loop, by far the nicest join you'll get will be with a small length of hollowcore braid.

What's the application?

mono used as a trolling topshot - slickest way is to splice a hollow spectra loop onto the mono then double or triple loop to loop to the braid bimini.  Double line in the mono and double/triple loop to loop to the braid bimini is OK but requires guides that will accommodate a large double line knot (as a bimini or even a plait in 130 lb mono will be).  If braid is significantly smaller diameter than the mono, insert piece of dacron on the braid to act as anti-chafing gear where the braid and mono are looped together.

mono used as a casting leader - would now use the FG or similar knot.  Practice till totally confident.  Re-tie after hard use or after every big fish.

I seldom use such heavy tackle but braid to mono I have used FG for the past 4 years and have yet to experience a failure.   For casting a leader knot it can't be beat.

For a loop I go with the surgeons knot, even to tie a loose moving hook on the line as for Tuna.    I love the simplicity of this knot, when sitting on a small boat its easy and quick.
