Post by: alantani on February 01, 2022, 08:18:40 PM
this trip will be the same as last year, a 5 day trip at the original lodge.  as usual, the "out of towners" will meet up the evening before for dinner, then all of us will meet at the CBX, cross the border into tijuana and fly to cedros.  here is the breakdown.  at this point, it's "first to post" to grab a spot.  looking forward to fishing the island again.  any questions, just ping me.  thanks!  alan

5 Day: August 29 - September 2, 2022

Trip Cost: $2,600 x 12= $31,200
Half Day 6 Pangas $180 x 6=$1,080
2 extra pangas 3 days: $2,400
Less Charter Master Discount: -$1,100
$33,580 by 12 = $2,798.34 each

I received an email from her a number of weeks ago where she increased our price due to fuel and air cost so that we could pay in advance.  On my payment receipt, the $150 is included under Extra's.

now that the two bluefin trips on the spirit of adventure are done, it's time to turn our attention to the cedros trips.  it's a smaller group and should be much easier.  hotel accommodations will be harder.  the prices of the hotels at the landing are nearly doubling.  we might have to find something closer to the CBX.   :-\

There is a Hampton Inn near I5/CA56 intersection @ 11920 El Camino Real San Diego California 92130.  If one calls and asks for the "Philips" rate, it should be $95. 18556050317. 35 miles north of the CBX.

Tidbits of Information

NO REELS WITH LINE THROUGH TSA CHECK. Please put them in your checked baggage.

Please remember, on the return flight there is a 72# weight limit.  Pack light!  We try to get you home with as much fish as possible.

I have put this "Tidbits of Information" together for those questions that are frequently asked.
These snippets are in no particular order...just random thoughts that might help.

PASSPORTS ARE REQUIRED

CBX Passes are provided. If you lose your pass, you are responsible to purchase a new one. ($30 roundtrip, $16 one way)

Please bring your own rod and reel setups.

I have this next section in the Final Roll Call, but it is by far the most asked question...
Gratuity is a personal thing and at times a tough conversation. With that being said, I'm going to tell you what we do and then please do what feels comfortable to you.
We tip 18%-20% of the cost of the trip.  I take 20's, 10's and 5's and I bring my "Gratuity Envelope".  Each day we take $35-$40 per person for our panga captain. (Each panga captain should receive $100-$120 a day in gratuity. Be mindful if you have requested to fish 2 per panga, the panga captain should still receive $100-$120 a day.) On the day of arrival, 1/2 day fishing, $10-$15 per person for the panga captain is fair.
If you are having Flor wash your laundry, please put it in the white bag and on your bed in the morning with $2 or $3 per item.
At the end of the trip, whatever is left in the envelope we brought, I put it in the provided "gratuity envelope"  for the tip jar that will be in the dining room on the last evening.
I hope this helps and like I said, this is just a guideline.

You have the opportunity to fish San Benitos Island. It is off the north point of Cedros and takes an hour and a half to get there.  With that being said, there is a $100 fuel surcharge payable to the Panga Captain and you must leave San Benitos Island by 3pm to return to Cedros Island. (San Benitos is the "Jurassic Park" of Calico Bass.)

Cedros Sportfishing is an All-Inclusive fishing adventure.
Alcohol and Gratuity are not included.
Not all cellular phone plans are created equally! Check with your carrier to avoid roaming charges, or put your phone in "Airplane Mode".

We have bottled water available.
Use bottled water for brushing your teeth.

Use the ice cubes from the kitchen refrigerator.
When drinking anything from a can, please wipe off any residual ice water from drinking area.
The small fridge by the coffee maker in the dining room has sodas, gatorades and bottled water.

Please don't be shy, ask the crew for anything you need.
Richard is our host and translator.
If you want anything from town (beer, tequila, rum, tortillas), please let Richard know and he will be happy to drive you.

FYI - When taking new rods or reels to the island, be mindful to take the reels out of the new boxes and price tags off of everything.  This has never happened to anyone in our groups, but we just heard of an angler who was going to La Paz, took a new reel with him, still in the box with the price tag, and customs charged him an import fee.

I have an APP on my phone that does the dollars to pesos conversion. It's Dollars to Pesos by Adiante Ventures

Please tip your panga captain daily as you may have a different captain the next day. For the most part, you will have the same captain.  On the last morning after breakfast, or the final dinner, our crew will have a gratuity jar available in the dining room.
We have a minimum of 10 crew members to serve you.
They will accept Dollars or Pesos for gratuity.

*Housekeeping will service your rooms daily.
There are towels in your room.
Your rooms have blow dryers. (You're welcome ladies! ;o) )
The outlets and electricity are the same as the U.S.
***Please note: No toilet paper in the toilets.  Please use the covered trash can in your bathroom. They will be changed daily.

No rod tubes.  Please use rod sleeves and bundle your rods together or you can wrap your rods with beach towels.

Please pack light. (You don't need to bring your 60# SKB tackle box) We fit everything for 2 of us in a small soft sided tackle box and our reels go in a duffle bag. There is a tackle shop on the island. Richard can get a hold of them if you need anything.
You will also need a few sinkers. The most used are: 2oz, 4oz, 6oz

Again, pack light. We have a daily laundry service available. Please put your laundry in the white bag provided and put it on the end of your bed.

Our cooks serve local favorites, the same dishes they serve their own families. If you are fortunate enough to share a fish with the kitchen...ask for ceviche, it is wonderful! And yes! You have to put the mayonnaise on the chips...yum! Chips are made fresh daily. Dang they're good.

The tortillas are made fresh daily on the island and are epic! Best I've ever had!
On one trip, we took over 40 packages home! Yes, seriously... Take some home!

Breakfast, Lunch, Snack and Dinner Daily.
Lunch will be packed to go on the pangas.

3 anglers per pangas and they have flat bottoms.

Bring Sabiki's for making bait.
Bring 3-4 rod and reel combinations, hooks, lures (light & heavy), plastics, weedless and regular leadheads. Please check our website under GEAR. www.cedrossportfishing.com

The crew will rinse your gear clean after returning everyday.
Fish processing is included and all fish will be frozen.
Do not bring a cooler to the island, but please have a cooler in your car at your drop off point.

There are 99 steps down to the beach. The steps are by the BBQ area.
There are mosquitoes and if you are like me, you'll want to bring insect repellant or wear long sleeves. I even have to spray my toes and feet.

Gear question,
I'm getting ready to order my go to Salas 7x in blue and white; but it occurs to me that possibly just one color is not a good idea. What s color #2? First thought is scrambled eggs.

I was in the boat when Jack broke off the mint/white and switched to scrambled egg. He was killing it with the scrambled egg. There is definitely a scrambled egg JRI in my bag this year.

Poseiden Green, mint and blue/white JRI DW1 worked well for me last year.  Will have Scrambled Egg in case it works as well as last year for Jack.  Picked up some JRI Stingers for Calaicos.  Blue Pacific Tackle online store and Squidco in San Diego (closed Sunday) had them in stock last time I checked.

I like mint and sardine (bird poop) in addition to blue/white. I think I'm taking a dozen jigs, most are 7x with a few 45's and a couple JRI 4's. I tossed in a few smaller jigs too... ok, make it 15 or so!

This is ALL the Cedros related tackle that survived my garage fire. One plano box was in the house for some unknown reason. I leave in the morning for 10 days in northern Manitoba. Not sure I'll have enough time to order online what I need when I get back (14th).
I'm rooming with Alan, but I don't know where. Maybe I can hit the Landing to restock, just not sure what selection they may have. I arrive 12:20 on DL 2387 from ATL.
Would some kind soul purchase me a half dozen surface irons in popular sizes (the lighter the better for my 73 yo elbow) and colors. And a half dozen swim baits or more in your favorite colors. And anything else you think I need based on the photo (sabiki's, lead heads, etc.) I will repay you with confederate cash or rubber check when I get there. :D
Alan, based on Rosie's memo saying no rods are available, I'll have to borrow some from you. I'm only bringing 2 reels, a Curado 300DSV for calico's and my favorite reel, Andros 5 (compliments of Alan's dad). I also have an Andros 12 available if you think I'll need a 3rd reel. After age 70, a 2 speed is your best friend! I plan on dropping by the Navy Class VI liquor store in SD so if anyone wants discounted booze, I'll be taking orders. Ron can handle that chore as well.
I'm not taking any fish home. Alan, you can have as much of my share as you want, the rest can be spread around. I can bring a blue soft side cooler bag if needed and just pick it up on the SoA trip.
I'm supposed to have limited internet access in Canada. Maybe I can check in to answer any questions.
We need to take LOTS of photos. I've been gone "fishing" so much lately that the wife is suspecting I've got a Victoria's Secret model on the side.

Also working with local sinker guy, buying lots of 10 oz sinkers for bottom fishing for yellows, sheepshead, black seabass and the pinto bass. Last year we lost about 5 sinkers per person per day

Let me know if anyone would like some, my plan is to bring around 20...last year had about 10 to start, lost them all, bought 6 on the island and lost them all too! Gonna bring extra and leave them behind this year if I happen to not lose them all

I've never used a dropper loop at Cedros!  I bring a couple of 4oz for the Sabiki's.  I use a 2oz leadhead with a swimbait or a 6xJr to plumb the depths!

The two times I went I brought 4 sinkers ( 2 oz6 and 2 8oz) and left them with the captain. I did a lot of deep dropping but did not loose many. I wonder if you guys were fishing a hungry bottom spot.

At this rate we will all be at 72 lbs in jigs and sinkers ........... ;)

We definitely were fishing some hungry spots.... kelp forests for the sheepshead can be brutal since the fish can kelp you even 30 feet off the bottom. Couple that with some screaming current and hangy rocks and my tackle bag experienced a major lightening!

We never deliberately dropper looped for yellows (and I never did get a bite on the yoyo jigs, all but 2 of those are staying home this year), but Bottom fishing saved ron and I on the last day last year. Headed north and tried everything for no luck on yellowtail until we went for a bailout bottom fishing. Current was screaming (needed 2 8s to hold) but we had a blast getting the pinto bass, and Ron got our only yellowtail and a halibut on the bottom. Hit up a black seabass spot on the way home and I got a baby and Martin had a big one that we couldn't stop. Sure beat more trolling around without luck or another long day driving around for Dorado without a sniff.

Somehow i bet this year most of those sinkers are staying on cedros, either in the kelp or on the panga  ;D . Somehow I bet a few jigs will end up as ornaments on the kelp Christmas tree as well

My best day for goats was when we fished next to some local fishermen diving for moon snails. They'd break them with a hammer on the boat and throw the shells & guts over the side. The Sheepshead were stacked up under them! One of the guys was our pangueros cousin and hooked us up with snail meat for bait!

Sell a Lexa hd 400hs-p?  No, but I can bring one for peaches to use.

Abyss 806 with a Lexa 400? That's a whippy 15# bait stick! A bd 808mh or 809h would be better.  Hybrid 809xh for 50? Ok, but I like a 7 1/2'er for slow trolling and fly lining Mac's and yo-yo but it's based on what feels best to you... I'd go with one of your many hybrid 760xh's.

i think that the yellowtail was 28 pounds.  the black sea bass was estimated at 180 pounds.  it took a while, but it was revived and released.  it's a female, probably filled with eggs, and is going to taste like shoe leather.  glad that tracy made the call to release it.  still a fish of a lifetime, though!!!! ;D

Cedros Sportfishing - August 29 through September 2, 2022

short version - this was the best trip to cedros that i have ever had.  weather was good, the guys were all great, the fish cooperated and cedros sportfishing made it all happen.  we do need a little more ice on the boats and we need a way to either catch bait faster in the morning or have bait already on the boat when we board.  regardless, it was an awesome experience and i highly recommend the guys at cedros sportfishing. on to the report.

august 28th, 2022

you know the drill.  up at 5am from the san jose area with just one fuel stop and and a couple of bathroom stops, me, tracy and jack.  we made it to the san diego airport and 12:30, arriving at the exact moment that mike pate was walking out the door from his flight from georgia.  all four of us will be staying at the sea harbor inn, the old vagabond.

dinner at miguel's is always 5pm.  there is always room at the bar.  these guys must be getting old.  they're not drinking near as much as in previous years!  this is me and georgia mike!

rich brethour from arizona, todd johansson from british columbia, and jack bradley from san francisco.

ryan wood from oregon,  tracy wong from santa clara, and ron jones from washington.

the dude lost a ton of weight!

then it's off to the marina club!  just so you know, tracy is a tournament pool player.  georgia mike's not half bad.

august 29th, 2022

first order of the day is breakfast at denny's.  then it's an easy drive from the harbor to otay mesa and the cross border express, or cbx, at 8am.  for this leg, you need a passport, a boarding pass for your flight, and this ticket to cross.  you go through the gate, down the hall and up the elevators.  there is only one way.  once on the top deck, you walk across the border into mexico to mexican customs.  a cedros sportfishing staff person meets you as you exit customs and takes you to the airline desk to check your luggage.  then you walk past the bar.....  ahem, i said past the bar....  to the gate.  we board the plane at 10:20.

the plane is a 14 seat cessna grand caravan.  you are limited to 70 pounds of luggage per person.  if you weigh 150 pounds and the other guys are all 220, you don't get credit.

one thing that i've never taped before is the ride from the airport to the lodge.  the town itself is in pretty rough shape.  covid certainly didn't start, but it was beat up from before.

https://youtu.be/K2926x3iSZE

the lower lodge itself is very nice.  remember that last month we stayed and the newer upper lodge  the lower lodge is the original.  both are equally as nice.

ok, no goofing off.  we are fishing in 30 minutes!  we get 4 hours of fishing time.  it was pretty incredible.  limits or near limits for all!!!

august 30th, 2022

tuesday!  up at 5am, breakfast at 5:15, leaving for the boats at 6am, boarding at 6:15, making bait and fishing by 7am.  my first fish was quick and easy!  javier is our captain again.

september 1, 2022

last day of fishing!  making more bait!  it was slow for me and ted.  need to find a faster way to do this, or just already have bait when we board.  it took us 45 minutes to fill the bait tank when most guys were done in 15 to 20.

for the last three days, we had been fishing in the shallows due south of the salt transfer station.  on this morning, the massive schools of bait was either down or just gone.  we still stuck three and then ted asked if we could go to point san augustin.  it was the perfect call.  we found a kelp paddy and slow trolled macks in a big circle.  with every pass, we would hook a fish.  we ended up with a full limits for captain and crew in no time!

i can't say this enough.  i go on alot of trips.  this trip was, without a doubt, absolutely, totally, one of the best fishing trips that i have ever been on.  yes, the fish cooperated, but it was also the staff at cedros sportfishing and their attention to detail that made it so much better.  the rooms are nice, the food is home style and delicious, the boats all have 40 pounds of ice on board, and the fish are immediately gutted and gilled.  from the boats they go straight to the processing facility where they are cut up, vacuumed packed and frozen. they have it all.  the boats and captains, the lodge and staff, and the fish handling.  rosie, thank you.  please book us for two trips next year.

That Yellowtail was weighed at the dock at 46+ pounds. The BSB was estimated at 80 kilos by the Captain Javier. I was Tracy's official photographer that day. Also got him a nice 7 minute video of the 2nd half of landing the ~180 lb BSB. He reciprocated the next day by taking a pic of me holding a nice WSB and a very exiting 1 minute video of me fighting a 5 lb Pinto bass.

THANKS

when I said "me and my family and MY HOUSE are ok" it was because there are persons that lost their home or part of their home, not many houses were damaged as the ones I will show but few of the ones that live pretty close to the beach, they received the strong winds with high tide and lots of water that washed out the foundations of the houses and the rest is history.

this was caused mostly because of the BAD combinations of the MONTH with the HIGHEST tide of the Year (September) + happened on the days with the highest tide of that Month + winds of Hurricane Kay (degraded to tropical storm, I dont want to know what would have happened if we have gotten the Hurricane in Category 2 as it was expected).

I will upload some pictures of some of the damage caused by the hurricane Kay
