Title: Well, that was a new fishing gear failure for me..
Post by: JoseCuervo on April 05, 2022, 12:14:28 AM
One minute it was FISH ON, the next second I had a rod and reel in one hand, and a handle assembly in the other.

Tell me what you think went wrong.. I am pretty sure I already know.  :o fail.jpg

I guess the handle screw wore out from fatigue or overtightening. >:(

I think you took advantage of the handle bolt !!!  You are going to the next hole whether you like it or not. .

I'm certainly no expert but I suspect my math teacher would call that a rounding error.

Metal Fatigue
at it's  WORST.
The only way to have seen that coming would be to X-Ray it before you tightened  it down or super magnifier Glass .

I had that happen during the assembly of a Tib P21XN with SS gear sleeve.  Over tightened the nut and the SS cut right through the nut.  Bill

Is it wrong to blame the wrench?

HA! Too bad you didn't discover it when assembling. I say blame it on the fish. I take it you didn't land that'n?

Actually I did Greg.. I handlined her in. It was touch and go for a minute as the reel was spooled with braid, you know, the stuff that cuts fingers off? I wrapped a slime towel around my hand and a few wraps of line so I had a hold of it while I dug through a gear bag for some gloves (which I basically had to put on with one hand). I think my fishing partner needs a hearing test as I yelled I NEED HELP no less than 10 times to no avail. In his defense he was leaning out over the side of the boat by the exhaust clearing some fouled gear.

It was only about an 8 pounder.

YES!
Never had onea those handle screws do that. When I service a conventional with the open nut, a separate cover and C-clip over the gear sleeve(e.g., older Daiwa Sealine) I'm likin the the Penn set-up much more.
