Title: bail spring replacement
Post by: jmarkey on April 18, 2022, 11:31:19 PM
I am trying to replace the bail spring on an old Shakespeare 2200 reel. I have the correct spring (with 2 little prongs on either end) and have placed it in the receptacle for the spring. I know I have to catch the one prong on the hole in the bail spring plate that holds it in place. I just can't figure out how to orient the plate and rotate it to load the spring before inserting the screw. Any help?

Hi Jack, and Welcome!

On this Shakes spinner, and many others —- it is always easier to remove the bail wire from the angle lever (bail mount) when installing a bail spring.

Just insert the bail spring and do not preload the spring pressure until you have the bail screw attached.

Then move the angle lever into it's proper position and reattach the bail wire.

Let us know if you are successful, or not.

Glad to help.

Best, Fred

You have to leave the screw barely started and trick the lever over the screw.

What Keith said. Sometimes, on certain makes, there's a block on the spring cavity that the bail arm needs to slide over to get tension on the spring before one tightens down the bail screw. On those you have to make sure the spring wire doesn't get pinched in between the rotor cavity and the bail arm plate.

Huraaaay!! Successful install with your advice. Thanks guys! Always amazing how something so simple can be so frustrating until you get enlightened from an expert. I have 2 more spare bail springs. Hopefully they will last me for a while.
You may wonder why I would put so much effort into an old reel - it was my dad's reel and he passed it down to me. He was my fishing buddy until he passed last November.

If you have a problem the Ohana can't solve, then maybe the problem doesn't really exist. Bill
