I am trying to replace the bail spring on an old Shakespeare 2200 reel. I have the correct spring (with 2 little prongs on either end) and have placed it in the receptacle for the spring. I know I have to catch the one prong on the hole in the bail spring plate that holds it in place. I just can't figure out how to orient the plate and rotate it to load the spring before inserting the screw. Any help?
Hi Jack, and Welcome!
On this Shakes spinner, and many others —- it is always easier to remove the bail wire from the angle lever (bail mount) when installing a bail spring.
Just insert the bail spring and do not preload the spring pressure until you have the bail screw attached.
Then move the angle lever into it's proper position and reattach the bail wire.

What Keith said. Sometimes, on certain makes, there's a block on the spring cavity that the bail arm needs to slide over to get tension on the spring before one tightens down the bail screw. On those you have to make sure the spring wire doesn't get pinched in between the rotor cavity and the bail arm plate.
