Depends why they're closing? Is it waning interest in their products? Financial mismanagement (Intentional or otherwise)? Company patriarch dies and their children have no interest (and pure fishing doesnt want the name)?

Crowd funding can't do anything about any of that.

They ain't making Toxic Chemical Toys  to give Children .
It is a Family owned Fishing Reel Company that needs Help
It was bought out by a private invester a few years back BUT is still operated by the Family and lifelong employees. They are blaming the Covid mostly for their demise if you listen to the Face Book LINK that was posted above .
  .Simple as That. lol

This REELY happened back in the sixties

A guy started a magazine ad (Didn't have interweb thingy back then just personal ads in back of mags to get a girl ,guy ,or money ......)
to SAVE THE NAUGA
the lizzard whose Hyde was used to make Naugahde Leather.

We NEED MOM and POP Fishing Reel Companies  regardless of their reasons unless secretly they ARE Selling Poisonous Candy and Toys to Chidrens ....

The reasons companies are closing can be any of the above reasons that Jason is referencing above —- and a dozen more.

Ranging from less demand for their products to intentional transferring of debt-load to an acquired company.

But in this case —- sadly, it is just less demand and poor sales for their products.

When many surf-caster anglers have switched to throwing soft baits with really light gear into the brine — the demand for the tried and true good ole Alveys has lessened to the point that the company cannot make enough money to stay profitable.

With the constant costs of running a business —- before a product ever gets sold, supply chain & inflation issues of double digit increases sometimes monthly —- regardless of the love for a product —- it is time to just stop fighting it —- or adapt and add other lines to their equipment offerings.  And that is a lot of work, R&D, and effort that may not make sense to the Alvey family and their investors at this point.

They join the 95% of reel manufacturers that while having a great product —- cannot afford to remain in business.

It is just reality math.

Best, Fred

It doesn't help when the ultimate powers to be won't allow people to go outside, either. If one is stuck in the house they can't go fishing and if they can't go fishing they're not going to buy fishing reels & equipment. It all compounds from there, and then they wonder why the world wide economy is tanking.  :-X

According to a Spokeman of the Company the closing ain't got nuttin to do with management,Low Sales , Smaller Fishing Reels, lack of Fisher Persons, Water Temp ,Diarrhea,or Monkey Pox .
Here is a Quote from an Alvey Company Spokesperson.

QuoteAnnouncing the shutdown in emails to shoppers and on social media, the company said "drastic cost increases" in raw materials as well as global supply chain issues were proving to be too expensive to remain in business.

Here is another source if you could not Hear the link posted earlier that MAY Enlighten you on the REEL DEMISE .

There was a 'rival' sauce maker who used to do a "going out of business" sale at least once per quarter to drum up sales. Everyone in the industry knew thats what he does, but people keep stocking up.

Supply chain is a b+++h.  And right now, supply chain is a B***h that is going through a divorce.  Getting goods from point A>B affordably is beyond a challenge.  Sorry to see that they could not weather the storm, but as Fred said above - it's math and when you get to a certain point it's time {whether we like it or not) to move on.  - john

Well, thanks for the info./reference, Don. "And so it goes"(K. Vonnegut). Both interesting and sad. I see the monetary value of these products increasing as time goes on. There's alota metal and quality construction in them-thar reels. And they might some day be a conversation piece for folks out-a-fishin an oldie.
Kinda refreshing the way the Down-Under people just speak their minds when commenting.

This works for a restaurant once or twice, maybe.

It works for a furniture store once every 90 days.  😄😄😄

But for the rest of the businesses —- when the owners have to start writing checks out of their pocket to cover payroll because sales won't come close to covering it —-

There are too many variables being in business nowadays —- in a perfect business environment.

Then you add in the issues going on in the world currently —- and unless a business is really healthy and prospering —- it is sometimes the right decision to pull the plug.

Hard calls...

Best, Fred

suspect that braid killed the Alvey.. we used to fish them for carp, could get longer casts with the Alvey than any other reel. But now with the ultrathin braid lines, you can get those distances with a big spinning reel.. Similarly it was a great shorefishing shark reel because it could hold really a lot of line, again braid makes this irrelevant.

sad news though, my brother still has his Alvey though hasn't fished it in years..

Notice we don't have any shortage of gasoline ?  Hmmmm ?
Drove by the Richmond refinery a couple of days ago . Crude tankers as far as the eye could see .
Same outside the Golden Gate , offshore . Plenty o crude tankers waiting .
$7.00 per gallon .....
