Title: Tekota lube port?
Post by: Lunker Larry on June 18, 2022, 04:17:17 PM
This has bugged me for years. I figure one designer wasn't in sync with the others.
This looks like it is a lube port for the Idler gears which is a good idea but it is covered by the side plate blocking access and since you have to remove all the screws for it and the side plate.. what's the point.
Comments?

All I see is the screw holes

Are you referring to the little plastic line holder on the sideplate

Like I said it LOOKS like a lube port but it may just be a fabrication anomaly that I see in all of them.
That white line over the screw hole in the first picture is adjacent to the idler gears in the last picture.
It is on all of the Tekotas that I have come across and that's quite a few. The second picture shows the side plate that covers it.

It may be a defect or a drain hole, I wouldn't think it's for lube!

Looking from the inside-out it does look a bit like a purposeful port. Whata ya do, remove the side-plate screw then squirt in some lube? Looks typically Shimano with 4-plastic idler gears...

It's for clearance for the intermediary gear on the level wind/line counter. Look at the bottom photo, if the sideplate wasn't "milled out" there then the gear would foul on the recess for the screw.

It is definitely that but you wouldn't think Shimano would plan a hole in the reel that wasn't for drainage or access. I guess since it is covered by the side case it is irrelevant.

Thanks, I wondered why I had never noticed that on the dozens of Tekotas I had done.  I can resume my usual alcohol intake secure in the knowledge that I still have enough functioning grey matter  :d
