Title: Penn international 50 (old) problem with left side plate fitting
Post by: steelfish on June 22, 2022, 04:42:42 PM
I dont know how to explain the problem, but the this is not the 1st time I had hard time making the spool to sit properly on the left side plate with the antireverse dogs, but I forgot how I did it the last time to make it work.

its easier to understand with the pictures.
I have a guy that want me to help him to spool his old Penn int 50 single speed with 150# braid and a long trace of 200# mono, he wants to use this reel for big grouper fishing.
the reel was on good working condition, nice free spool and everything was kind of smooth, I put the fishing line on the reel, the next after I put the line on the reel, the guy came back and told me to do a complete service on the reel, easy peasy, right? naaaa.
as expected everything was straight on the reel, put new grease, etc,etc until was time to put the spool and close the reel, no freespool at all and ugly noises, so I uninstalled everything and checked CAM, lever system, etc. until saw how the spool was not aligned with the frame, it sits to high on the leftside and too deep on the right side plate, actually there is no room for drag adjustment.

check the pictures.
if I take the leftsideplate out and try to sit the spool on it, it looks that fits nice (but still high) and spins "kind of" smooth with a low clicking noise from the AR dogs and it stops if you try to spin it backwards so, seems that the dogs are working as they should, but still it sits too high and I couldnt found how to make it to sit lower on the left side plate, so, in short, even with the left side plate unisntalled and with the spool on it, you can see all the LIP of the spool which means it still need a bit of adjustment to fit free on the reel.

it was 2:30am and I throw the towel.

the pictures with the GREEN arrows are how the reel was before I dismantled it and RED arrows how its currently, you can see a big part of the LIP of the spool on the left side.

PS: all the drag system on the left side of the spool is correctly installed, I check that out about 7 times  :o  >:( , bearing on the leftside plate sits correctly on its place and it cleaned and greased as well as the bearings on the spool.

Something is either on Backwards (Like the plate on the left side of spool )or Bearing not seated properly  shims in the wrong place on that side .???

I was also thinking the bearing might need a push or something to sit lower on its place
Thanks

well, both spool bearings needed a gentle push with a 15# hammer to sit properly deeper on the spool, that helped to leave enough space for adjustments and center the spool on the frame with a nice free spool.

15# hammer? My biggest is 8# that use for breaking concrete and rendering old disk drives unrecoverable!

Haha I kindof exagerated a bit, it just needed a gentle push with the butt of the handle of a screw driver , some milimeters were doing the difference
