Title: Penn 450 SS front loading spool issues
Post by: bamacrazy on June 23, 2022, 10:27:47 AM
I have an old 450ss that I bought new 30 years ago. I took it to a shop for service 15 years ago. Since then, the reel winds more line on the front of the spool. There is about a 35 degree incline in line level going from back to front. what causes this and how can I fix it?

Sounds like you need to shim your spool higher. These reels will never have perfect line lay but it can certainly be improved.

Line diameter and shims go hand in hand .  Generally the smaller diameter needs more shims .

You can make shims from plastic containers .   Add two shims , pull off some line and rewind it .

Repeat until you are happy with the results ..

I had a 450ss a while ago and the whole rotor assembly was bottoming out and grinding when turning the handle. Couldn't figure out what it was for the longest time - then I looked up the schematic and it turns out that those little thrust washers are important.  ;D
