Title: ABU 7000 Leve lwind
Post by: borntofish on July 10, 2022, 04:26:58 AM
I have purchased ABU 7000 which was in rather neglected condition, but got it for nest to nothing with a rod I liked. I was going to use it for spare parts but got the free spool mechanism working again with a clean up so I thought I might as well restore it.

I found other problem which is the level wind. It moves alright with the spool installed but it won't go back and forth. In other words it jams when it reaches either end. An ideas why this might be? Am I up for new parts?

Start by dismantling the level wind mechanism and see if anything obvious is broken or warn.   Could even be gunged up with sand or old grease.

Post a photo which would make it much easier to comment.

Good luck.

It most likely needs a new pawl.

Yes that was the problem with the clutch plate - all it needed was a clean up, so I'll try that first.

Yeah, it should reverse on it's own. What Cor and dayOne said. Another thing that comes to mind is the worm position. Too far to one side or the other and it might hit the frame before the pawl hits the area where it can reverse. If that's the case, you may to haveta adjust or shim the worm position (if possible).

The pawl has to rotate when the carriage reverses direction.  It may be stuck.

Check the points on the worm gear at the end of the run. Doesn't take much to bend the tips and prevent the pawl from engaging. You can straighten then out with a slot screwdriver. This can be caused If the pawl is frozen or material gets packed against the frame preventing from tracking all the way.

I replaced the pawl. It was actually stuck in the holder due to corrosion. I have a nice reel now. The original drag is actually very good. Like the rest of the reel I gave it a complete strip down and clean up.  Thanks for the good advice.

One more problem now. I reassembled the reel and there is a fair bit of play in the handle when I screw the drag down to a normal setting.

One thing comes to Mind Make sure you have  the wavey shim (item 24 in place ) and that it is not  worn out allowing it to go past the squared flange on the Sleeve.

I'll look into that. I should have mentioned I lost the C - clip that goes on the drive shaft and used a non standard one.

The shim is there but it is up against the star wheel. I take it is meant to sit on the top of the flange?

Not a Strong Suit in their design but everything has to be picture perfect as in the Handle needs to not have any slop in the fitment on the Sleeve(Shaft) and all the little spacers and c clips in place and finally insure the retaining nut is Tight . Don't rely on it being just lined up so the Cap will fit on it as you may have to tighten it another bit to make it tight and Have the Cap fit on it .
If you don't get it post some pics so we can see how you have it together .

I can get the handle tight but only if I lose proper drag adjustment - that is if it won't back off. I suspect the drag stack and washers may not be the right height. It
s not the c - clip as I swapped one from another reel and there was no difference.

Is it the Stock Handle or an aftermarket?
Really need some pictures of the parts you have on it to see if something is missing .

It's a stock handle. It seems like the drag stack plus washers is a little high. Not sure how tat could have happened.

Fixed now - I had the plastic spacer the wrong way round. Different mindset this morning - now I will finish breakfast.
