Title: J.A. Coxe/Bronson 1420L reel. Loose Clutch lever.
Post by: Wizid on October 30, 2022, 04:45:12 AM
Hi, I recently acquired a J.A. Coxe/Bronson 1420L reel, which is in quite good condition "except" for the clutch lever, which is quite loose. I've searched the internet to find a schematic to no avail. I'm wondering if there is a screw missing that would hold the lever on? Thanks for any help in advance. I found the attached pic online, and this is the part that is loose, alBC 1415L Bridge Engaged copy.jpeg though I can't see a screw inside the lever in the picture?

Dunno where you're at with it. Coxe schematics have been hard to come by. Don't know why. I never did find any for my SW reels. What I was able to find are a couple "parts lists". In both, the freespool lever is listed as integral with the head plate. In other words, you'd order the entire head plate rather than the lever parts. Perhaps the lever mech is pressed in? I have a 1420L and when I get the chance I'll pop the plate and see what it looks like.

I recently showed a Coxe 950 in this topic.  While not the same reel as yours, I believe the factory assembly methods are similar.

It appears the lever and eccentric are pressed together and if no threads are present, no screw is intended.  In fact, as you've probably noticed, quite a bit of the entire mechanism is pressed together.

What I can't figure out from your photo is how the eccentric engages the pinion yoke.  The yoke seems to need a lift and a push and I'm not seeing the means to do so.

No screw missing. The FS cam should be "loose". What stiffens it up is the clutch plate against which it rides and activates. See photos of the FS lever in both positions. Possibly, your clutch wasn't installed correctly or maybe missing a spring?

Now I see how it works.  It would seem that the cam lever would have play if the cam doesn't rest on the yoke.

I couldn't find schematics either.  Looked at patents as well, but all I could find were conceptual drawings.

Unless somebody knows otherwise, it appears that Coxe (Bronson) intended the replacement of assemblies if a component failed.  Efficient for reel repair, but probably expensive for the fisherman.

A replacement parts list for any of the larger models would be helpful.  A Service/Repair manual would be a gold mine.

Yes, the clutch itself keeps tension on the otherwise free-swinging cam.
