Title: shimano Spheros 12000 FA
Post by: Donnyboat on November 23, 2022, 12:59:09 AM
looking for info on dismantling the above reel, were the handle fits, on the operate side there is a cap, after removing that cap, I see thread inside, so I am under the imprecision if I hold the rotor firmly, I should be able to unscrew the handle, I have had a bit of pressure on it, but its not turning, just making sure, before I really place more pressure on it,
the owner told me that he has caught a few sharks with it, & it is feeling a bit rough when he turns it, maybe wanting a new bearing, but I see that it has a bush infront of the pinion, also I has noticed that the main gear, has a few screws in it, they were a bit loose, so maybe thats why it was running a little rough, I would like to get the main gear out, I am under the impression that it will come out once I get the handle out, true ?.
all advise will be appreciated, cheers Don.

Is there an M6(ish) threaded post in the cap centre?  Picture of the cap perhaps?
If it doesn't have the post on the endcap the handle should wind off.

Thanks Mr Clean, its only a cap, so I am thinking, it should turn, I placed some acatone & auto transmission oil in it last night, so hopefully it will turn easier now, thanks the lot, cheers Don.

yes I did get the handle undone, & have the reel in pieces, it has a SS bush bearing in it, inside a the non reverse bearing, that SS bush has quite a bit of corrocion on the out side, quite pitted, I think that would be causing the roughness, I will check with Shimano to see if they have one in stock, but being a very old reel , I dout it, thanks every one, cheers Don.

With Shimano spinners roughness on winding is almost always either the pinion bearing itself or the ARB sleeve (very occasionally the ARB rollers themselves).

Broadly speaking they only made about half a dozen anti-reverse bearings for any generation so there is a very good chance you'll be able to find something compatible.

EDIT: I was once servicing a trio of Baitrunner 8000D reels for a gentleman that fished from a kayak and routinely got his reels rather wet. On all of them the anti-reverse (both the sleeve and the rollers) was corroded, and he didn't want to spend the money to replace them. After polishing them as much as I could, they were still rough and noisy. Eventually I said "stuff it" and greased the anti-reverse - contrary to just about every warning ever about not doing this - and they all operated relatively smoothly and quietly, with no sign of the anti-reverse failing at any meaningful drag level for those reels, and have continued to do so for a couple of years since.

The bearings in that reel are;

Main gear 2- 9x17x5
Pinion gear top 9x20x6
Pinion gear bottom 8x12x3.5

The clutch bearing is the same size and style as all of the others in the same build class and year.

You will also see that the non handle side uses a plastic bushing instead of a bearing. It is replaced with the 9x17x5.

If you need the inner sleeve for the clutch bearing and the clutch bearing itself just let me know. No charge

The bottom white plastic bushing can be replaced with a bearing. 8x12x3.5.

Hi Boon, thanks for your info, very helpful,
Thanks Kieth for your very generous offer, & the details of bearing sizes, just leave it with me, I just might be able to get shipping in Australia much lower, I will ring shimano & see what they have in stock, & of course if I did take you up, I would insist on paying for the parts, cheers Don.

Shimano sent me a copy of the schematics, & the SS bushing is not illestraighted, on the schematic, only has the two pinion bearings, 1 on the bottom of the pinion & 1 in the centre, I found them new in my cartch, I rang Shimano today, & they told me that the SS bushing is part of the roller clutch assembly, part number 5447, but that is obsolete now, but I can use a replacement one, part No-16299, the cost is AU$ 34:00 including GST & postage, so I am placing the reel back together, to see how it feels, before I order the latest assembly, cheers Don.

Pinion gear top 9x30x6

Can you confirm "9x30x6" - That is not a standard bearing size. Thanks

That's not right to me either.

It's 9x20x6
