Title: Squidder Drag Issue
Post by: Kalbi on January 20, 2023, 04:50:58 AM
Aloha,

I have squidder with a stainless gear sleeve, 5+1 drag stack, and 10-505 star.  When I tighten the drag all the way down, the reel starts to bind when turning.  Anyone have suggestions for me?  Reel seemed to work fine with the original gear sleeve, drag, and star. I did notice that the original star has a groove milled into the underside and the 10-505 star doesn't.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Is the bottom eared washer bottoming out in the grove in the gear?

Don't know.  How do I tell?

Put a CF washer, keyed washer and another CF washer in the gear without being on a gearsleve, drop a eared washer on the stack and try to rock it pivoting on the ears.

Two fixes  extend the grove in the gear or bend the ears on the bottom eared washer using 2 of the old keyed washers and a bolt to keep the eared washer flat.

Keta, I did what you suggested.  Took the main gear off of the gear sleeve.  Then, placed CF washer, keyed washer, CF washer, and eared washer.  The eared washer seemed to fit well.

After tinkering with my reel a little more, it looks like the star is bottoming out on the side plate when I cranked the drag down all the way. I gonna try looking for a shim that I can stick between the spacing sleeve and the star.  Hopping a little extra clearance between the side plate and the star will fix the problem.  Does anyone know if a spacing sleeve from another reel that has the same diameter, but is a little longer?

A longer spacing sleeve (9-60) from any Jigmaster size reel should do the trick. If it's too long you can chuck it in a drill press and file it shorter (a lathe would be ideal). You can also possibly use additional washers on the top of the stack as long as they will fit inside your side plate.

Measure the length of your existing spacing sleeve (9-60), then check with Mystic Reel Parts for a slightly longer sleeve. https://www.mysticparts.com/Search.aspx?k=spacing+sleeve

You can also post your sleeve length and one of our members may have a spare.

Dito on the longer spacer.  If there is room a Bellville washer on top of the last metal washer works too.

This is why the stock Squidders have the recessed groove on the underside of the star —- so that the star can experience more drag travel because the star will bottom out on the sideplate otherwise.

Squidders are some of my favorite reels.

Lee is right, a Belleville may be the answer here —- but even then, it may require removing a SS and a CF drag if it is too tall and rubs on the inside of the sideplate.

A 4+1 drag stack is perfectly functional and acceptable.

It is not a big deal.  Generally the upgrades will improve your Squidder's catch range as well as performance.

But it is important to remember that when doing upgrades and mods —- a few small tweaks are sometimes required.

Best, Fred

Anyone know if someone makes SS sleeves for the small Penn reels with coarse threads?
