Title: Spool sizes and reel history questions
Post by: Shellbelly on February 08, 2023, 09:20:40 PM
It's interesting to me how there seem to be standards that were developed in the industry.  Mechanisms aside, spool widths parked in my brain and I can't shake it off.

In this photo are a half dozen brands, many models, and decades of production.  Notice the common spool widths?  I'll use Penn #'s because it's easy.  From the top:  49, 60, 65, 67, 68.  Of course, 66 has a place, but I didn't want to stand on a ladder to take the photo.

Now, who or what established the spool widths that seem to have become standards?  Was it simply dictated by line diameter and, by coincidence, everybody built around that?  Tail wagging the dog theory, right?

Lastly, I don't have another model that uses a 68-width spool.  I added that in case somebody has some reels that follow that spool width as closely as the others shown here.

This is what happens when it's raining outside...except for Bill who gets attacked by coffee. 8)
