Title: For Sale $64.99 ea: 416 Stainless Steel Heat Treated 4:1 Gear Set for PENN 113H
Post by: Black Pearl on January 22, 2013, 01:46:15 AM
Now you can order this item or other parts I offer online. Please go to http://mkt.com/pro-challenger-llc (http://mkt.com/pro-challenger-llc) and place your order.

Hi all,

I have decided to go with the USA 416 grade stainless steel heat treated for this gear set. Since I do not really want to burn a hole in anyone's pocket, and I want everyone to have a high quality material gear for our beloved PENN 113H, I will be able to sell this SUS 316 gear set for $59.99 (shipping is included) when it is ready. I will offer this price to Alan Tani's website USA member only. For outside USA member, the price will be $59.99 each + actually shipping by USPS First Class International in an order + $1.00 each for PayPal service fee.

Finally, I just want to make a point that I am not looking for to make a whole lot of money from this gear set. I do it because I know it is a right thing to do (not everyone can afford a $80.00 or $90.00 high quality SUS 316 gear set).

I will have few pictures ready in a week or two.

By the way, this gear set is made in Taiwan.

If you have any questions, you can drop me an IM.

I accept credit card by phone (561-568-3980), check or PayPal. Please PM or email to us at sales@prochallenger.com to order. Please let us know the state where the package will be shipped to. There is 6% sales tax for FL customer.

Anyone can also order or purchase (in person) this gear set at following dealers:

1.) Mystic Reel Parts (https://www.mysticparts.com/Custom/ProChallenger/P316113H401.aspx (https://www.mysticparts.com/Custom/ProChallenger/P316113H401.aspx))

Hi Rob,

I did have a quick chat with Alan T about what gear set I should do next. The following is the wishlist.

1.) Accurate 665
2.) JigMaster 500
3.) PENN 114H
4.) Open suggestions (PENN 112H)

After the 113H is settled, I will start the next one.

Please note that all gear set will be made in 316 grade stainless steel.

I want to know what Alan Tani member's has in mind.

4.) Open suggestions (PENN 112H)

The 112H uses 5-500 and 13-500 gears, the same as the 500/501.

Yep!
red 3/0 ( 5-500 & 13-500 ) black 3/0 ( 5-66 & 13-49 )
red 3/0 (112H ) is almost twice as fast as the black 3/0 ( 112 )
black 3/0 is slower but stronger than the red 3/0.

Sounds kind of hypocritical putting outsourced gears in vintage reels. Why can't someone step up and make them here?

Actually, some member did try to find to have them make here in the USA. The price is just out of reach. If you can find a USA company will make this gear set (main and pinion) in 316 grade stainless steel for less than $40.00, please let us know.

By the way, my source is using 316 grade stainless steel stock material from the USA, using a Japanese cutting machine to cut those gears, and having Taiwanese personals operating the machine.

When the product is done, it will be shipped to the USA by FedEx (USA company). I will also have to pay import duties and other fees. Just saying......

Not knocking the product, and not trying to offend. I understand people have priced this project to try to get them made. At least you got it off the ground.  Brendan.

I'm way behind you, go for it.  I'm trying to fund some taps for drag stars right now, working with Bryan on Daiwa drag washers, some other things that might be interesting and gears have been put way back on my list.  So far I've only has stock Penn gears to work with and have a rough price.

Do not need 113H gears at this time.

My wish list:
Next - 114H
to follow - 500, both 5:1 and 4:1.  4:1 is a very useful ratio for these reels and some strong, corrosion resistant SS gears would be nice.  Newell used to make them.

As a total amateur that was thinking, "how hard can it be to get gears made", let me tell you that  it's a real pain.  A while ago I figured how hard can it be, I live in the Seattle Area, there's tons of small machine shops that make parts for Boeing.  Trust me there is a lot of stuff that goes into it.  This type of gear has one company make the blank and another cut the teeth, and they need you to tell them exact specs, and they have a minimum quantity and a set up fee, etc.  Bottom line, if somebody has managed to get all the pieces of the puzzle put together and it's not going to break the bank, I would like to extend a huge thankyou for your efforts..

Yup, I have a shop in Portland that will supply the finished rough parts but even the clean up and pressing the hob on the pinion take time, there is also a high minimum order.   Black Pearl has done us a big favor making these available.

The advantages are the following:

1.) The main gear is in 316 graded stainless steel while the factory is using bronze (brass) material.
2.) Both pinion and main gears are helical cut. It is quieter with a straight cut gears.

You forgot the stock factory gear ratio is 3.25 to 1, these are 4 to 1 so you get faster retrieve. ;D

Hi guys,

Just a quick update on this project.

1.) After few sets of testing, everything is coming together, and everything is good to go.
2.) The first batch of this SS316 113H gear set (18 sets) will be here next week 03/20/2013.
3.) I will let Sal checks it out first before sending the rest of the 16 sets to other member (in ordered sequence).
4.) This SS316 gear feels much smoother and stronger during testing between the SS304 gear set, which sells on Ebay. I will let Sal makes that judgement.

I will take some pictures and post them here.

Sal, please send me your email address, so I can send you an invoice via PayPal. You can also send me a personal check if you want.

It seems that you will make it to receive a set in the first batch. Of course, we will still have to wait until Sal tests it out before I can ship out the remaining 16 sets on the list.

Each person will get one set from the first batch. If a person reserved 2 or sets, he will receive the rest in the main production ran batch on June or July.

Rowdy, don't base buying your gears on my test. Alan simply asked if I would look them over and out of respect for him, I be more than happy to do so.
Let's keep in mind that I'm not a Metal Engineer. I will install the gears in a reel and give it what I believe to be a good work out.
I will also be doing some comparisons with my other gears and that's about it.
I hope it will be of some help to all.

Latest updated:

Guys,

I know some people are not happy with the gear set they have bought from Ebay seller. Therefore, I have been thinking that if you bought a set or more sets from the Ebay seller before 03/20/2013, and you returned and received your refund. I will sell you this 316 SUS set for $44.00. If you have bought 2 sets, you can purchase 2 sets from me for $44.00. Of course, you have to show me the refund email from PayPal for that transaction.

Please note the price does not apply for the first 17 set batch.

I hope this will make you guys little happier.

Thanks,
--Alan

I've cleaned the bits of plating out of the internals and i will try to post pics when i assemble them. The fit and mesh of the pinion and main gear looks like it will be very good. Thanks Alan for making these available. Without installing these it looks like you've got a winner. ;D   Bob

Alan,I just received the gears today, thank you!
I must say, I'm impressed.
I took a close look and they are very similar to the Accurate gears. Your contact must have used a set of Accurate as a template.
I have not installed them in my reel yet, but  I don't anticipate any issues.
You did good, these are actually better that Accurate. I will post a couple of pictures to show how nice the pinion and main gear mesh.
Alan, I truly appreciate all of the hard work that you did to bring us a quality product at a competitive price. Thank you!
here is a shot of the Newell gears

here is a shot of the Accurate
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/gears/033.jpg)
and a shot of the Black Pearl's gears
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/gears/035.jpg)
Notice how tight the fit is with these.
The fit on the spool shaft is perfect
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/gears/027.jpg)
I'm not an expert on steel, but I did hit them with a center punch. I'm not sure you could see it but the new gears have a less mark than the Accurate, the new gears are on top. Lesser mark= stronger material.
They're very close in weight also, these are the Accurate
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/gears/017.jpg)
and the... lets call them the BP gears ;D
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/gears/018.jpg)
All other dimentions are spot on with the Accurate gears.

I installed the gears tonight. I didn't take any pics. Sal's pics were better than mine would have been.  ;) The gears are very smooth and quiet for a SS gear set. It shifts into and out of freespool effortlessly even before the sideplate was installed on the reel. Alan, whoever made them did an outstanding job. I can't wait to put them to the test. Bob

Hi guys,

Thank you for all yours feed back so far. Therefore, the main production of the 113H gear set will start next week.

By the way, I can't brand these gear sets (500/112H, 113H and 114H) as Black Pearl because "Black Pearl" has been trade marked. However, since I own (trade marked) PRO Challenger, these gears will be sold under "PRO Challenger".

Newbie question. On a 113 4/0 Wide what would be the Inches per turn with a 4-1? I cant even find out  what it would be with a 3.25-1?  I would like to get a set or two for my 4/0's. Thanks

Welcome R46Chevy.  It depends on how far you fill your reel and how much line is out when you reel.  :D Throw a tape measure around the line on the spool and multiply by 4 or 3.25.  ;) Bob

R46Chev,

There is a mathematical equation to determine the inches of retrieve per turn of a handle. PI (3.14) times the dimaeter of the spool times the gear ratio of the reel.  An example would be: Spool diameter (2.5") x gear ratio (3.25) x PI (3.14) = 25.5 inches per turn of the handle.  This is assuming you have a full spool of line.

John

PS.  Bob and were replying at the same time.  As Bob stated it depends on how much line you have on your spool at a given time.  You are going to retrieve less line per turn of the handle with a half empty spool vs a near full spool of line.

Gear ratio, yes. Line retrieve per crank, worthless.
It is never accurate, just a tool to sell you reels. :-\.
Here is an easy trick to determine the amount of line on lets say a spool of 3" diameter with a 3:1 ratio.
Place the spool on one end of your work bench and put a dot on the edge of the spool and bench.
Roll the spool three times on the bench and stop where the dot is facing the bench. Now add another dot, remove the spool and measure the distance between the two dots.
Still worthless thought, but it helps us compare reels ;D

I was finally able to install the new gears.
The tolerance is very tight on these, They feel smoother than accurate and Newell.
I also did a little stress test, I'm not sure you coiuld see it, but here is a shot of the stock stand
(http://i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g431/pescatore1/002-17.jpg)
it got bent all out of shape.
The gears performed nicely, I did remove them to take a closer look and everything looks good

I'm very happy with these gears.
Thanks again Alan.

Sal, what # test did it take to bend the stand?
Rudy, I used a 130# class rod  and 130# line.
Rod was set in my contraption that I made by the three house, I believe I showed a picture of it earlier.
The rolling weight was set at 75to 80lb, I wasn't able to turn the handle with one hand when the star was tight all the way, had to use both.
The scale on the line marked 22lb. This test was done by turning the handle, not lifting the rod.
Last week I did the same test with  the gears that I customized with the 6 cutouts, I was able to use one hand and the scale marked 28lb.Also, the reel was fine. :-\ .
Gears where both fine.

Sal, it seems that the Penn frames & stands might be the weakest link in the chain. Thats why long ago I always liked to beef up my Senators with solid frames from Tib. & Acc. The Long Beach reels and a few others are always twisting the frames & stands. Penn reels are strong but I have always felt that the frames are the weakest part of the entire reels. I bought a L B 65 a few months ago that was spooled with 80# mono :o & you should see what the stand looks like. The insides were fine. I think that when beefing up these reels we should start on the outside & work our way in. ;)    Rudy

I agree, the stamped stand especially is just not super strong. I've bent them back to shape with my hand on the corner of a desk. I haven't heard of a Newell base and bars twisting, but certainly the Tib frame is the strongest solution. The only issue is that you get really deep into the money real quick. I love old Penn reels, but sometimes you have to ask yourself where the line is.

Rudy, 80# on a LB is crazy. I'm not surprised by the stand, I've seen my share. Most reels that I fish with have the full frames. I've seen many on the 113HLW, but haven't seen them on the smaller reels. The reel that I used is not pretty, you didn't think I was going to use one of my babies? ;D but held up just fine. What surprised me was that I could pull that same weight with less effort, by using the gears with the six ears.

I know a few extra days isn't going to kill me but it has been over three years now since I first posed the question....  ;)

I am tempted by the kit with drags and yoke

if there was a kit that had stainless sleeve, dog, drags, gears and yoke- for about $95.....boy that would sell

would be like a Edelbrock top-end kit for GM 350......carb, cam,  intake, heads....

Joel, that would just make it tooooo easy for everyone. All kidding aside that would be a turn key kit. Team it up with a Tib frame with a color choice and that would be awesome.

I installed mine last night on a YTS "TANK"

WOW!!!!!

Super smooooooth, super quiet, can't wait to tie into something mean and heavy down in Baja

WHoever made these really takes pride in their work,  so far these appear to be the best aftermarket 4:1 gear ever made.

Anyone now can also order or purchase (in person) this gear set at following dealers:

1.) Scott's Bait & Tackle
2.) Smooth Drag
3.) Brian's Fishing Supply in Hawaii
4.) Gregg Chow chowderpuff7@yahoo.com

Charkbait (Mark) decided not to carry this gear set. He might change his mind later.

THAT's why I haven't found them. I have little time for anything East of the Mississippi and even LESS time for most things East of Pearl. I am rapidly adopting the saying.

I talked to Dawn (via email) the new gear sets (500) that she has, had to sent back to the machine shop. Something to do with the center hole. She also said that it might not fit the 5 stack drag. Just thought I give you an update. Still want the set your going to make.

Hi Gene,

I don't think that gear set will work in JM 500 at all regardless the center hole fits or not. I think it will fit the JM 505 only after it is fixed by the Smooth drag's supplier.

It should work with the PENN 113H2LW (China made). I just check Scott bait & tackle site.

Had a chance to try these on the water over the weekend.  So far, they seem good enough to stay in the reels.  Nothing big to pull in, but very smooth and the upgraded drag presented enough resistance to keep me happy.  The next question for me will be whether these stand the test of time of long-term abuse and neglect.

entering freespool is quite rough with my stainless gearset and i was wondering if anyone else was having the same prob. my set came from Dawn at smoothdrag about 6 weeks ago.

my setup:

- 113H with Tiburon P40 Frame
- stainless gear sleeve
- stainless dog
- stainless pinion yoke (sanded and buffed where it contacts the jack)
- heavy (non-aluminum) spool
- the rest is stock but the eccentric lever, jack and spring were replaced a couple months ago

switching to freespool is smooth with the original gearset (without swapping any other parts).

with the stainless set: there's slight resistance to enter freespool with no load, significantly more resistance with 10-16oz jigheads and it's damn near impossible with 2.5lb salmon balls on the line. i've noticed that the spool wants to move backwards a bit as the eccentric lever comes back. so helping out with the thumb enables freespool. using the thumb is no problem with 10-16oz jigs/leads but it gets awkward at 2.5lb.

or is this just expected behavior with helical gears since the teeth aren't straight?

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Hi Steve,

One of the member had a similar problem. The following PM is from him to me. If that works, you will have to say "Thanks" to SeaDawg.

"I took the reel apart for about the 5th time again today, change the yoke, put it back together, still hanging up. I took the handle side off the frame and looked inside hard while shifting it in and out if gear and I finally saw that the problem looked to be centered around the Eccentric Jack. I had considered this before, but I had not looked at it closely enough apparently Smiley There were little grooves cut into the tits on the Eccentric Jack where they pushed the yoke down when putting the reel in free spool. Any tension on the spool from tight line and it simply would not slide across the yoke, it would just get hung up."

Thanks,
--Alan

Hi Alan,

thanks for the super quick response. if the eccentric jack was grooved/notched i imagine the original gears would have the same issue but they do not. i took it apart again to be sure and the tits look/feel smooth. :)

the eccentric lever also moves very freely with the sideplate off:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBtOyi-jXEM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBtOyi-jXEM)

but with 33oz of load it just gets stuck:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZjLH2TXbe8 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZjLH2TXbe8)

i thought it might be getting stuck where the pinion gear meets the spool shaft so i filed the inside of the gear a little to match the wear pattern on the original pinion but it didn't help.

any other ideas? thanks again Alan.

Get the ss yoke and place it on a piece of medium grade sandpaper on a flat surface, apply a little pressure with your index and middle finger and go in a circular motion for a couple of dozen times, finish with fine sandpaper.
The yoke is just a little thicker, it doesn't take much. Make sure the side with the eased edges faces up when installing.

nice. thanks for the recommendation Alto Mare. i sanded and buffed the areas on the stainless yoke where the jack makes contact a couple months ago but did not sand down the whole piece. will give that a shot tomorrow.

the original brass yoke with the stainless gearset exhibits the same behavior. i'll get both yokes on the calipers tomorrow too.

the same problem exists after taking some 80 and 150 grit to the ss yoke. the used brass yoke was 1.13mm and i sanded the ss yoke from 1.19mm to 1.14mm. hmm, it seems that i'm the only one reporting probs with this ss gearset so i'll install them in another 4/0 and see if it does the same thing. its back to the original gearset for now. thanks for trying fellas.

Well, looks like you're checking everything you could possibly check.  :-\
Try cleaning the inner side of the pinion gear with some stainless steel wool and also the spool shaft.
The way I clean my spool shaft is to choke one end on a drill and let the other end spin in some steel wool.
I realize that you've mentioned all is good with the original set, still try cleaning the spool shaft.
The new pinion gear might be a hair tighter on the ID and the notched area from the original.
Good luck!

I hope you figure it out. Alan's gear sets are the best out there right now. I didn't have any problems with my 113h. I used the stainless sleeve and yoke. I didn't even have to sand them and they worked flawlessly. I am sure it is something simple. Hang in There!

Steve, I forgot to mention that I had the same, but mine was with the 114H. I sanded the SS yoke and everything was fine afterward. I purchased a few of these gears from Black Pearl, my 113h's are working nice and smooth.
If you think about it, it could only be one of two things, the ss yoke or BP pinion.
Do as I mentioned above, If that doesn't work you will need a new set.

the BP gears worked fine in the 2nd reel. night and day difference.

after taking some more measurements it ended up that the first reel had a slightly wider spool shaft nub. i popped the ring off the BP pinion gear and filed/sanded the notch from roughly 5.77mm to 5.85mm. Sal, i also took some steel wool to the spool shaft and inner side of the pinion gear. the inner diameter was a hair tighter like you said.

success! freespool under load is no prob now. now its time to get some albacore!!

thanks for the advice Sal. your knowledge and willingness to share is appreciated.

To the A.T. Crew,
I just had to let everyone know that these gears are the real deal.  I have done a lot of homework on gears and pinions, and will say these are the smoothest gears that have ever been in my 113h.
I haven't had them in my reel long enough to give you a corrosion resistance update, but I will say they do there job and do it well.  I have the Accurates and Newells in my other 3 (113H) wire lining reels that will be for sale as soon as I remove them in the fall.  Just glad I bought enough for the work horses....  I had faith in you, Alan.  Thanks for not disappointing!
I will keep you guys posted on corrosion resistance sometime next season.
All the best,
Dom
PS- I get no dough from anyone to say what I just said!

That is really exciting! I'm waiting for the 112H set, which is close to production. Any one else would be selling them as is instead of continuing to refine the design, but then they would just be another set of good aftermarket gears.

That's obviously not the standard here.

Works great in the Progear.  I have one set each in my 541 and 454.  I recently switched out the 4:1 BP's gear for a 3:25 steel gear in the 454  to get more torque but the 4:1 gear is beefier.

I have the BP 113h 4:1 gear and pinion coming from smooth drag along with the stainless yoke, essentric jack, single stainless dog, and BP 10 tooth sleeve. Will this all go together without modification? It's going into a stock 113h with tib new style frame? I'm seeing in older posts that some sanding is needed to the yoke to get it all functioning properly?

Guidance would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

I believe those will drop right in, no modification needed. Keep the rounded edge of the yoke facing up as you install them.
