Title: Stuck on re-assembly: Calcutta 700
Post by: Ken_D on July 23, 2013, 04:46:30 AM
Whoops. I was over-confident. My first CT700. I'm stuck at the 1749 clutch retraction cam, and its 1752 spring. Unsure of orientation, and how the spring figures into the picture, RE the 1757 clutch plate. I waited too long between teardown, and put back, and made the rookie error of not writing notes as I went along. Too cocky. Thought I could do it. The schematic is clear for the rest of the reel, but not these pieces.  Hoping for some help. Thanks, Ken.

PS: Is there a tutorial in the works, by a rodster, where this reel is popular? As above this is the first one I have seen in my fishing/trading area. It's got the push button to cast like the Abu 6500 C3. thx, kd.

Belay my last. Just for poop and giggles, I did a search for the 700, here at AT's, and lo/behold, I found a Thai thread right here !!  Much thanks to LadyE for posting here at AT's !  (http://www.fishingthailand.com/webboard/picarea/_fishingthailandcom121424_1057849433.gif)     From back in'09       http://www.fishingthailand.com/webboard/show.php?Category=fishingthailand.com&No=121424‏

Hi all, I recently inherited a Calcutta 700. Upon first use, I had the issue with the free spool button sticking. Opening the reel today, I noticed the clutch retraction spring (part 1752) laying loose in the reel. The schematic is really not clear on how to install the spring. The link above is broken, guessing the Thai sute has shut down. Hoping someone can share some further insights such as a picture if a 700 with the spring in position, or any tips on how to install.

Thanks for responding Wompass Cat. I had a good hard look at that thread before posting. The pics in that thread show what I believe to be parts 1760 and 1763 and look different the spring I need to fit. The spring in question is 1752 and is not visible in the pictures, I assume either hidden by the drive gear.

The schematic for the reel is located here https://www.mikesreelrepair.com/content/schematics/Shimano_CT700.pdf (https://www.mikesreelrepair.com/content/schematics/Shimano_CT700.pdf) however it is not easy to see what one of the ends of the spring should be attached to.

Cheers, that is how I read it too. The spring however then slopes down at a 45 degree angle and the needs to stretch rather conserably to reach where part 1749 sits in the reel. Constantly pops out when trying to fit. Or maybe i have installed the end to the bottom frame incorrectly, i currently have it between the 2 holes that part 1753 fits through, should it be below that frame?

If you have the reel, any chance you could take a photo of the spring in place, it is also possible incorrectly installed other components may the cause of my issue.

I know nothing about these reels but it looks to me like the spring goes around the post 1753

Is one end of that spring 90 degrees to the other ?

Thatnks again all. Lunker Larry, I agree, to me it looks like it goes around 1753, but sitting between the bracket that 1753 feeds through. Wompus Cat - yes it does, an image of it is available here https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/732397958136679318/ (https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/732397958136679318/)

Finally got it sorted, the spring hooks around part 1753 below part 1757. To me the schematic does not make this clear...

Now I have a problem with the handle which keeps coming loose/wobbly. Any tips on the process to take when reinstalling the handle. Ie how tight do you turn the drag before putting kn the handle.

I also find that the handle is quite hard to turn, seems smooth and easy until I tighten the screws of the faceplate.
