I forgot how I went down the 2200 rabbit hole. Then I got 2-2210 II. Festus has some good tutorials on the Japanese Shakespeare reels. They really have impressed me!

If so, I just got one & like more than a Mitchell 308 & great photos!

Thank you! That is indeed a 2200, it is a sweet little reel. I have a few 308s and honestly I agree with you on this assessment. This one almost fell victim to a calamity in my little workshop, I'll post about that later.

Penn - Vintage / Re: 180 and 180/155 Frankenree...

So far I'm striking out on the second 180. I knew it had a broken plastic spool and was missing most of the screws on the right side. Then, when I took it apart I learned that it was also missing the jack, yoke, dog, and dog spring, and the pinion gear was fused to the spool by corrosion. The main gear was plated, and the plating was coming off on the bottom. The leather drag washers disintegrated when I took the drag stack apart, and the fiber under-gear washer was broken as well. The tension washer on the top of the drag stack was flattened. The gear sleeve didn't spin smoothly on the bridge post, and I couldn't get the pin out.

So, I used the bridge, sleeve, jack, yoke, dog, and dog spring from the first 180 (I had replaced them with the parts from the 155), the frame and foot screws from the 155, and I had an HT100 drag stack, hard washer for under the main gear, and a 3.2:1 gear set from Mystic Parts. I took the curved tension washer from the 155.

I got it all together, with the plastic spool, but the plastic pool was rubbing on the side plates and wouldn't spin freely. So, I tried an aluminum spool from Pro Challenger. It spins fairly well, but I can hear it contacting the side plates, especially when I turn the reel from vertical while the spool is spinning. I tried loosening the frame bar and foot bolts and re-tightening them, but the spool is still rubbing on the side plates (or something).

Is the spool rubbing on something a common problem? It seems like I have seen the opposite problem mentioned more often -- too much gaps between the spool and frame so that line gets caught in the gap. Are there any common problems that cause the spool to rub that I should look for?

Fishing Tips and Techniques / BFT Trolling Advice
Last post by Keta - March 17, 2026, 11:44:17 PM
We have BFT off of Oregon but  we are clueless as to how to catch them consistently.  Any help from the east coast would be appreciated.

#1 Where to target them, temperature and water color breaker, rips and in what temperature range.

#2 What to drag around, how far back and speed range.

Great minds think aliike :d

I appreciate the effort that you have put in documenting your journey with powder coating.  I am learning some new  stuff, and generally enjoying the show!

I am trying to do the badges . There is vacuum tool to remove unwanted power , like the size of a needle .  Or I can paint when the hands are steady and do clean up before the bake . I will get there sooner or later !
