Got this Shakespeare 2052 on the left in the mail yesterday. It was scuffed up, didn't have the original handle so I ordered it mostly for a parts reel.

Tore it apart, cleaned everything, and reassembled it this afternoon.  Other than cosmetically, it is in just as good shape as the more expensive reel.

I finally messed around and got the old broken copper strip used for the clicker tongue removed. It's pretty stiff, what can I fabricate for a replacement?  Don't think a strip cut from an aluminum Budweiser can is strong enough.

Hey Festus, I think a Penn dog spring will work. I looked at the spool on my 2052...and it looks like the dog spring will do it. If it's too long you could trim it. Actually, if you had any copper shim laying around you could cut a piece of that too.

The flat Penn dog spring works. Ive used one before.

Look around for any flat copper, brass, or SS pieces that you can make work. I was thinking of a piece from a razor but it would snap and break.

Thanks guys, I might just order the flat dog springs from Scott's plus a few spares.  Needing some handle screws and handle lock screws for my 209, 309, and 350 Leveline anyway.

I picked up a few 4 x 10 pcs of brass sheet stock in different thicknesses from Hobby Lobby for just those types of repairs. They're only $4/5 a package, work great & a 4 x 10 will probably last you forever.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

Good idea, thanks Tom.

We have a new Hobby Lobby in town, they bought the old Kroger building.

The street sweepers in town use a metal bristle brush; when out walking, I always see these strips of metal in the road & finally figured out what they are (come off the sweeper brushes).  Handy for a lot of homemade parts.  Springy.

I believe the Penn clicker springs are/we're made from berrylum copper. Don't grind it or I jest the dust if you decide to modify one.
