What are the SPECIFIC MECHANICAL/DESIGN DIFFERENCES between spinning reels used for these two application and WHY (if any)?

Thanx in advance,

The main idea is that you want as fast a retrieve as possible for popping. With a sweep of the rod you "chug" the popper. The more of that you can then pick up in one turn of the handle the more chugs you get. Generally the more erratic the retrieve the more "reaction" bites you get. The ideal retrieves are over 50" per one turn of the handle.

For jigging, speed is nice but heavier jigs get tiresome to crank. Once you get closer to 300gms (12oz) then a little slower retrieve becomes preferred. Something closer to 36-40" per turn. A faster reel is ok on jigs that are only 150-200gms.

So, other than retrieval speed, no difference and one can be made to work for the other. It's just more effort over the day if the reel is not ideal.
