I also rested the front part of the grip on the rail and let the fish fight the rod while I winched.

The rail is your friend, especially in a vertical fight.  I'm putting together a bent but rod to keep in a rod holder during the fight so I can halibut fish with my broken hand.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

I use the Penn 24-56 handle on some of my older Penn Reels.  One day while screwing around in Bass Pro Shops, I noticed they had both the handle and these reel grips next to each other. Mind the Reel Grips ( http://www.reelgrip.com/ ) were meant for smaller reels, I said "hmm, I wonder if these would fit?"  so I played with them in the store, and they did fit! SO I have been using them.  I find they are not that hard to put on, give me a larger diamet reel handle to grab onto, softer and easier to hold on to when wet.  Ohn and they are cheap about 5 or 6 bucks a set.
Bad day of fishing still beats a good day at work!
