discover angling on the hulicat - 7/30/2015

you're about to meet one of the nicest guys on the water!

i'm part of a non-profit called discover angling.  gary edwards does all the legal work, i take care of all the gear, and richard kent is the guy that makes sure that EVERYTHING else gets done.  we have list of folks that help out, all local fishermen and women, on the actual days that we go out.  we take out groups of local kids on fishing trips.  this group is the sunnyvale police athletic league, or http://sunnyvalepal.org/

as you would expect, these are kids that might normally never get the chance to do something like this.

there are a few people that i'd like you to meet.  first is the tall guy in the back in the green vest, tom mattusch, captain of the hulicat.  yes, one of the nicest guys on the water.  if you ever get a chance, go fish with him!  in front with the black jacket, the lady with the big smile, is dori, the lady from pals!  and finally from left to right are jeff, mel, bill, richard and joe!

we always get a photo before we leave the dock, and before anyone gets seasick!!!!

it was (very fortunately) one of the flattest days i've ever seen on the water!

for many of these kids, this is their first time on the ocean!

working the gear takes a while to learn.

some kids picked it up pretty quick.  a double hookup on lingcod is pretty good in anybody's book.  and he didn't even want to come fishing!!!

the skipper put over some really nice spots.  quality fish all around.

even seasick, they kept on fishing!

hard to tell from the photo, but this guy was probably 5 feet overall length.

the captain took his time getting back so that mike, our deckhand, could filet the fish.  most of the kids still had some energy, but some were pretty exhausted.

poor mike, our deckhand, had to filet out 200 fish, 10 per kid!

yup, pretty beat!

we had three jackpot winners, starting from the right side was the biggest fish, the young lady in the middle caught the most fish, and the young man in red was voted the bravest.  thanks to okuma for donating the raffle prizes, three really nice spinning rods.

captain moretto from the sunnyvale police department and richard kent from discover angling got a chance to pose with our jackpot winners.

twenty happy but exhausted kids.  i'm sure they all slept well on the drive home.

Nice going Alan! I lived in Sunnyvale when I was in 6th and 7th grade.
When I was your age Pluto was a planet!

:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D
