ABU 5000C Plastic Spool Filler

Hey all,

I purchased my first ABU 5000C and discovered the plastic spool filler when I took the line off. Is this piece necessary? If so, are there metal versions that will fit this model?

No, it's not necessary it just reduces the amount of line to fill the spool. If you need more line capacity pull the plastic out.

I'm trying to put an old 5000c back into service.  When I bought the reel forty years ago I took one look at the plastic filler and chunked it in the trash along with the box, case, paperwork and everything else except the wrench and plastic vile of spare parts.  Couldn't imagine why anyone would want less line.  Those were the mono days before braid, before light weight whiffle spools, etc.  I finally found a replacement plastic spool filler after looking for six months and it cost me thirty bucks.
