many years ago i thought this was god,s gift to the fisherman.
i bought one of the 1st to come to oz.it was a lemon
it was replaced,another lemon
3rd one is in the pic,it was better,but i couldn,t get it to work to my satisfaction
replacement +a few extra $,s
went up on the shelf till now,its good,ill show you what i did.
it will make a good light line tournament reel.
ive got 0-10lb drag,      freespool,   good casting even with level wind
20lb line is max;(abu).    is ok,       no trouble to cast 40g lure 50m
its a boat reel,not surf.

i changed the shims in the cap to delrin.i do it in all my reels

a few comments
mod; shaft,ratchet,delrin,gear,c/f,eared,spacer,belleville,tube.
the original belleville/w was larger and thinner to what i put in
by changeing the # of shims in the tension cap will give you the drag range
you always have freespool at 6lb drag,thats recommended  max(abu)
its nice to have a v8 turbo but drive within the speed limit.or it will cost ya
only grease is on the cf washer.rest is inox m3 spray.
oh yes, i dont know why the reel  works

bearings look very weak and thin,i prefer the thick bushes dipped in tsi-301

daron, watch that old bit mate
i did a couple of tests this morning with the lever in off
off   strike   sunset
1/2lb  3lb       4lb
1lb     3 1/2lb   5lb
2lb     5 1/2lb    6lb
between off and strike you can move the lever 1/2 way
if you dont want to ramp up to fast

still had good freespool when the thumb bar was depressed on all settings
ill keep trying and testing and make it even better

freespool with the same drag.shim is 1mm of delrin.

As mentioned previously in discussions about this reel  (http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=4163.msg34162#msg34162) I'm not entirely sure, but suspect that the vast improvement would lie in the replacement  of spool bushings with bearings. And perhaps furthered by addition of a bearing sleeve.

i cant figure out why they had the belleville washer
directly touching the gear and the metal eared washer on top of that.
the reel is great now that i changed it.

Hi guys,  

I've been given an abused Abu 6600 LD to repair and it's needed a lot of work merely to disassemble reel fully. Reel never had any free spool or drag range.

Problem is after replacing 2 outboard bearings either side of spool, IAR bearing and sleeve, during reassembly trying to nestle right side plate to cage is causing pinion gear to elevate toward the drag lever thus creating a gap of about 10mm from cage to drive side plate and it refuses to nestle together to tighten thumb screws.

When I remove drag pressure plate, o-ring and spring from spool axle I can fully assemble reel and is smooth to crank with about 4 sec free spool on stock spool bushes. Replace said parts and problems begin again.

Hope someone can be of assistance as I know Wallace has sadly passed and this thread has been a great help up to this stage.

Be sure to move the sliding brake blocks in so they do not hang-up on the race.  Sometimes, putting it into and out of gear while you fiddle with the side plate will let it slide together.

Thanks for your speedy response. I've come across that problem before when a friend tried servicing his spool bearings and accidentally pinched his brake blocks from sliding out before assembly. It's wasn't the problem in this case.

Just had another go and reel is back in one piece running sweet. When one puts the drag pressure plate on axle the wrong way round things don't want to go back together correctly see

Got there in the end.
