I do something similar but only use a different color for the last 100yds. I figure you can see the spool when it is getting low and only the last 100yds is critical decision time. I do like the three color system but like you said, it is a lot of work.

Nice idea but isn't the point of the spool line capacity rigs to know when you're 1/3, 2/3 down in the spool?  I don't see the stoplight rigging being all that  useful in a reel with those markings.

agreed, but it will vary depending on the line weight.  this is an easy way to be sure.
