Shark Hunter

I picked up this little 716z last week in a package deal with a 650ss. The description, said "needs adjustment and cleaning".
The 650 had a loose rotor nut. Luckily it tightened up without damaging the threads. Usually they get stripped pretty easily.
The 716 is a mess. Someone had the bail off and I guess they thought they didn't need the spring when it went back together.
Also, this bail looks like a regular 716 bail. Looking at other pictures. This bail looks different with that tapered portion.
Someone also drilled a hole in the foot. What The? Were they making a necklace?
It also has a Frankenhandle. looks like it went to a 720 or something.
I got a new housing on the cheap, just waiting on a bail spring and handle. Maybe replace the cover plate as well.
These are neat little reels. I know why Sal likes them so much.

Sending this out to you today, from the Post Office in Fresno, Daron.

That natural color aluminum crank shaft and knob is from a Mitchell.

I'm assuming the hole in the foot was a storage thing? Maybe they hung it on the wall on a nail..
Ugh.

Some of the first 716Z did have the tapered wire, I believe.

Thank You Fred.
You too Mo for that valuable info. I was worried about line lay.

As long as the wire isn't bent out of position, that should be fine.

The last one I sold was in 2000. It was a NIB Greenie with all accessories. It sold for $189.00!!

Daron, there were two bail designs but I do not remember which one came first.  My recollection is that the handles were always gold color but I could be wrong about that.  This one was bought new back in the day.

Those are little tanks, I love them.
Keith mentioned he sold one for $189, I've seen a new 420SS go for $250 and if you know what you're getting, it's worth every penny in my opinion.
I'm glad I grabbed a couple  new  714-716- 420SS and 430SS,  when I did.
By the way, the 420SS  & 430SS are the same, except for the skirted spool and a part or two.
These reels, if fished as they should be fished at, will last a very long time.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

I swapped all the parts to the new housing.
Went without a hitch.

Blow by blow, This reel is as smooth as they come.
New bail spring, Handle courtesy of Fred, every single piece of this reel redone.
Its good to have some closure on a build instead of waiting for more parts.
Took it easy on the penn blue to make it smooth as it can be, Reel X applied appropriately.

I like these peens a lot too. Have a greenie 714 I went through not too long ago, and two 430ss. Need to get a spool shaft with the little roll pin for one of the 430ss though. It came in and was missing the roll pin. None of us are too far apart I'm two hours east of Cincinnati in Indiana. Don't know about you guys but I love catching some smallies with all my little spinners dam 110's and 220. Penn 722, 714, and 430.
