I know Daron and a couple others are good with them but I don't know how busy you guys are. Anyways, I'm looking for someone who can look at my 12/0. It's putting out too much drag. It won't go into free spool and it's been slowly increasing drag. When I took it apart yesterday 7lbs on the side plate read 20lbs on the scale. I thought maybe it was something to do with the springs or washers and it's not, as far as I can tell. My next thought was the cam was slipping and out of place, I can't even figure out how to adjust it. Then I took the spacer out between the thrust bearings and didn't have any drag. Seems like that spacer is a little thick though.
I'd like to send it out next week to someone who can give it a good once over and possibly send it off again for repairs from Everol if need be.

This sounds like it may be a spool spacing issue, or maybe marring/corrosion on some part causing it to hang up prematurely? Tough to diagnose without having the reel in hand, but basically you need to test each of the subassemblies for proper functionality, and check anything that takes up space along the spool shaft axis. Does this reel have the newer carbon fiber drag discs, or the older material?
I am too busy these days to give it the proper attention it deserves. Maybe call Everol USA, and ask for a list of authorized service centers. There is a guy that runs a small shop in the NE part of the state's that is a wizard with these, just Can't seem to remember his name at the moment.
Photos of the internals might help?
John

Leave the gun. Take the cannolis.

Chris, I'm guessing it has something to do with the drag lever cam. I don't have the parts to service this. I know you are Handy. Send Paolo an email and tell him how it is acting. From my Personal experience, I would not Deal with Everol USA. I sent you a PM.

Thanks Daron! Got the message. I'm almost 100% certain it's the cam and I'm going to break out the white table cloth tomorrow.

You can do it Brother, I bet it is hanging up somewhere. I work in a Union Shop and it is a Contract year. I am on 12 hour days the rest of this month, While my Union Brothers Negotiate. That leaves time for little else. Please take photos of the disassembly. I am not above learning new tricks. Daron

...It's putting out too much drag. It won't go into free spool and it's been slowly increasing drag. When I took it apart yesterday 7lbs on the side plate read 20lbs on the scale. What do you mean by "slowly increasing"? Like, from one week to the next, or while pulling line off the spool, or between one take-apart and the next? I thought maybe it was something to do with the springs or washers and it's not, as far as I can tell. Mmno, shouldn't be... My next thought was the cam was slipping and out of place, Not really, since it is a screw and not a cam per sé. BUT iirc, even though the cam is symmetrical and has a two-start thread, you can accidentally reinstall the drag lever / male thread on the wrong thread, ie start 180 degrees off of where it should be, which obviously puts things out of whack. I can't even figure out how to adjust it. You can't. Then I took the spacer out between the thrust bearings and didn't have any drag. No, that spacer is crucial. Gotta be there. Seems like that spacer is a little thick though. Mmmayybe, could be... but that would mean that the drag was never right, which you would likely have noticed before. You are a clever guy; you'll figure it out. If it is changing between one take-apart and the next, see the part about the screw thread. He's keeping a low profile...d'uh. Haha, love it. Yup, he was deep, deeep undercover...

I know this is an old thread but did anyone ever figure out the problem with the drag ? I don't think there is anyone out there who knows more about Everol reels than Robert Janssen !! I would be interested in the findings ! John Taylor

Hope our man Chris is doing ok- I think he got out of the Service, or at least rotated out of the SE Pacific. One of my first dealings here was Daron rebuilding his 12/0 Senator after a big shark cooked the old drags.
