Can insights to these reels be gathered by just looking at the plates ? Can color indicate a better reel? Red, maroon?

Just wondering. Thanks.

The old maroon ones may have steel gears in  them, vs. the newer red Chinese made H2.

Not all of the bright red reels are Chinese; Penn made bright red 114H reels in the US for several years. What you need to be careful of are the bright red 114H reels with graphite frames and self tapping side plate screws. Those screws strip out very easily, so easily that Penn recalled them several years ago but there are still quite a few around.

Does an exterior access for drags indicate an older reel?

What did they replace in the recall...the whole frame, or just the screws?  I just replaced a graphite half-frame on one of mine and found those coarse self-tapping screws in it.
