Hi everyone,  I have a question (again)

My avet SX5.3(classic ver.) have some grinding noise (or something like whirrrrrr ) when turn the handle and have very little rough feeling while turning the handle. (Even the drag set very very very light)

The reel is new out of the box. I tried regreased the pinion gear and main gear with Penn blue grease but the issue  still remain.

Every parts seems perfect,  free spool is fine. just the noise

Is this considered normal to the avet SX?  (This is my second avet reel . The first is MXJ  have no abovementioned issue)

Thank you (and sorry if I ask too many question :-X )

Gear noise? If so, would probably go away, or reduce, as they wear in.

Thank you MarkT for your reply .You mean break-in period or something lke that?

Jigtosser

I have seen this on several SX's
Gear noise will improve with use as Mark said.
Butt, it is probably the pinion bearing, it doesn't take much pressure to tweak it.
Brand new out of the box, if you set the drag too tite and crank the handle a few times to check the drag
Setting...bearing is toast  >:(
They are cool little reels, butt you have to go easy on the drag settings.
Don't ask me how I know this  ;D

some over-anxious guy at the shop could have damaged the pinion bearing at the tackle shop before the reel was ever sold.  hopefully it is a pinion bearing and not the gears.

Hello Alan , both pinion and main gear looks perfect :)

Maybe the sound  caused by stainless gears with straight cut gear tooth (I think ???)  since I understand that gears like this will not work  smooth as helical brass gears.  (Please tell me if I misunterstood :'( )

alantani

well, i guess so, but the avet stainless steel gears are pretty good.  i'd bet on bad bearings before bad gears.  and your other reel is fine!

Thank you Jigtosser, but I still wanna know how you know this?  ;D

MarkT

Ya know, I think you know how he knows!

I think a bad pinion bearing usually results in extra resistance when cranking rather than a gear noise. You report both a whirrrr and resistance so you might want to check the pinion bearing. A new one costs $5,

Maybe this could happen but I doubt it. I have tested my Avet reels several times and pushed them over drag specs for a very limited time with no problem. Remember this thread?
http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=25686.0

I did this test several times with no damage to the pinion bearing. Also in the past a member that does not come here anymore and myself were playing around with JX reels and adding angular contact bearing for the pinion bearing. We both did many test with the ACB and stock bearing and neither of us were able to reduce side load or get more drag using ACB. I played around with the belleville washers in many config's and even got the South Florida cam from Avet, and the max drag specs from Avet still held true. I swapped the bearings back and forth crancked the reel over specs several times with many tests and never damaged the stock bearing.

Now if someone cranked up the drag over specs and left the reel that way for sometime, like maybe weeks or more I could see a issue happening.

Also didn't the first SX 5.3's come with a spring loaded dog? I think they did and Avet had issues with it and later switched to the silent dog system. I was recently given a  MXL 2 speed that is a transition reel. Meaning it has the engraved side plates, metal handle knob but has the silent anti reverse. In the newer Avet reels there is part #47 and #50 which works with #51 to make the anti reverse work. In the transition reel I have there is no part #50. the wire making part #47 goes all the way to the dog.

Schematic here.

You may have the spring loaded dog version, it could be just the gears or it could be the pinion bearing but it would take more IMO than someone over tightening the drag and turning the handle a couple of times to crunch that bearing.

It sounds like this but not very loud like this.

alantani

ok, that is loud, and i don't think it will just go away........   >:(

You could see from that video that that reel is set all the way to full. I wonder how much drag he has set on that reel?

Natarach

He didnt mentioned about drag   he only said it's brand new ( mine too ha ha)

When he switch gear the sounds change. Maybe it's related to the profile of the gears  ???
