Is there a castable electric/power assist reel?

Going to have a pretty nasty shoulder surgery soon and was looking for ways to fish with one arm. I've seen the belt and strap contraptions for disabled fishermen. My mind was churning about electric reels which I know are for deep dropping and kites. But in my search I've seen smaller models and wondered if any of these reels were actually able to cast a bait. I know they're pricey but I would like to look into one. I have no experience with electric reels and was curious.

Electramate has a motor for a smallish spinning reel.

$419.99 + around $100 for the reel for 4-6 months of use wouldn't be beneficial to me. Whereas an electric I can still use for other purposes.

I could shave the handle ends off an old Abu, put a deeper handle nut on it and use a cordless drill cheaper. ;D Thanks for your help though!

If you do that, please post pics!  :)

I just ordered some stainless nuts that are actually pretty hard to find the handle nut is a M8 with a .75 pitch. I will post when I receive the nuts and start trials!

I had thought about an invention along those lines...   Might be cool to mount a right-angle cordless drill or impact driver to the rod butt.

Hi Indy,  you will find that the lighter electric reels do not last very long, I would not recommend any thing smaller than a Diawa Tanacom 1000, and there a bit combersom for casting, if you have a shorter handle on your rod, you can cast pretty good, and when you have to wind in with the shorter handle, it keeps your hand & shoulder down lower, I found after my op, I had plenty of strength down low, I was fishing good after three months, its only when your doing things up higher, that you will have trouble, good luck, cheers Don.

Thanks for the insight Don. I think I'm going to hold off on buying the electric and see if I can't make something homemade. ;)

Hmmmm, what about something gas engine driven???
I'm thinking maybe adapt a chainsaw motor with the chain going to a sprocket on the gear sleeve.
No batteries to charge or cords, and it would sound cool too  ;D

I have actually used a drill to smooth out gears on a 6500c3. The boss for the AR bearing popped out of the sideplate and the owner reeled in with the gears at probably a 25 degree angle. >:( I replaced the side plate with a spare and ran the gears through several polishing compounds until they were actually smooth and functioning. (Don't tell Robert Janssen I did this!)

I love my Fishwinch but I'm not sure about casting it. Never tried. There are attachments made for electric drills for some reels but mostly for the larger reels used in sword fishing.
