I have a black 114h. I intend to fish it and have it disassembled for a cleaning and greasing  along with new cf drags. The outer rings are stuck, is there really any reason to remove them?
Can I just clean up the sides as an assembly?
Am I missing something?

The 114H in black is a collector item, if I were you I would put it on a shelf and get a 114H in red.
If it isn't in great shape it would be fine to use it.
Of course these were made to be fished, so if you still want to remove the rings, try pressing a pocket knife in the crack where it meets the plate.
Do it at the bottom where the stand sits,  in case you chip it a little it won't show too bad.
If you take your time you should do fine.

Once the ring has moved a little, see if a flat head screwdriver with a thin blade will fit and rotate the handle gently back and forth.

Good luck!

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Removing the outer rings will gain you nothing. Just leave them on during servicing.

You can put them in the freezer for a bit and the plastic will shrink a little and they should come.
Do what you can with that you have where you are

Sal, that makes perfect sense and it would not have occurred to me as a layman with a plate in my hand, thanks for that tip even though I am not the OP. I have removed stuck rings without issue, but it didn't occur to me to attempt prying it from the start in the least conspicuous place.

They were not that tight when the reel was new.  I'm with Fred and would leave them alone.

I actually have 2. Black 114h reels.
I am not a collector, if anyone wanted to trade for red ones I would be willing. Condition is not perfect but is limited to corrosion on the posts.

Might take you up on that, I don't own any and it would be nice.
Send a pm, with what you're looking for.

Never mind, I wasn't aware someone else was already interested.
