Had a bit of a hiccup while assembling a Cortez 113H. Once fully assembled, the shift lever was in freespool and reel seemed ok. Then I shifted into gear and the lever was stuck in gear.

It's great when things go together right the first time, but in reality it is common to take it back apart to do some fine tuning.....at least it is for me LOL

The best part about most Penns is few moving parts, which makes troubleshooting a bit simpler. first thing I checked was the jack tabs, and there was the culprit. Appearantly this used jack had previously been installed with a steel yoke that was likely upside down and it cut big grooves into the jack tabs, which in turn would hang up on the leading edge of the yoke. I replaced that jack with a different used jack and reel now functions smooth as silk.

After seeing what a steel yoke can do to a brass jack, I would fully recommend steel jack for anyone using a steel yoke.

.....and the end result.....another yts added to the Cortez fleet

Ted could make anything work. :)

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Nice work Ted.  Thanks for the tip.  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.
