Your backplate photo needs to be taken rotated 90 degrees to the left so that the click dog is at the top. That way we can see how things line up. The nylon arms do nothing more than hold the click dog in place either on or off. They do not need to bend. The dog body should slide up and down between the nylon arms. Make sure the dog arm (outward portion) goes into a slot between the nylon click gear teeth. Also, make sure you have the correct amount of shims and both felt washers installed on both sides and adjust it so that the spool is centered when screwed together.

Below are a couple of photos with the click button on and off so you can see how it is set up and supposed to work. This one works perfectly. They are not complicated so getting yours working correctly should be an easy adjustment, especially given your nylon arms aren't damaged and the springs look fine. A better look at the click dog would be nice, though.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

WOW!!!

Where does the time go. I didn't use a question mark because I wasn't asking a question ! For all intents, my divorce started in March of 2019, so I had a bit of a distraction. Now I'm remarried and living a beautiful life!

It's been more than two years since I started with this reel. Yes Alan, it was black at one time but has faded to the coolest purple now. So, my son walked into the living room about a week ago and caught me looking at some Reel Porn on my phone. Yes Brothers, REEL PORN!!!!!
Anyway, he proceeded to hold it over my head that he's not seem me work on a reel in quite a long time. A few minutes pass and he came out of his room holding this old ABU 6K and said "Think you can fix this and put it on a rod for me ?"

Blackmail right ! If I don't fix it he's going to tell my wife that I'm hooked on Reel Porn and it's a hopeless cause. Well, I know trying to prove a point is pointless.

So, while discussing reels with my new friend SteveL, I brought up replacement parts for this reel. Well SteveL should change his moniker to PDG Investigator. As in Pretty Damn Good Investigator ! He hunted around and found this post that I had forgotten about as well as a couple other on the subject. Pretty interesting.

It would certainly appear that I'm not the only one with this issue. I looked at putting the shims at the bottom as suggested, but had issues with that as well. SteveL found this feller on another Reel Porn board and I'd like to thank him, but don't know who he is.

But, I got to looking at the pawl for this clicker plate and it has a hell of a lot of ware and some really sharp edges. Think I'm gonna try his advice on polishing the edges and see where that takes me.

Hope you don't mind Alan, but here is the link from the other Reel Porn site that was found by SteveL

Gonna start working on this reel now. Want to replace the level wind pawl and drag washers with carbon washers. Also might upgrade the bushings to bearings. Might make a pretty good birthday present for my 14 year old son when he turns 15 in March.

Thanks again for your help SteveL PDG Investigator !

 Oh,
And just in case this goes to trial or anything like that. My extortionist son isn't the same feller GOD sent me !

That little innocent boy that used to help his old Pappy work on a fishing reel now and then is shaving, driving trucks, boats and me crazy. He's about 220 and nearing 6' fast. Walking around in the back yard saying things like My boat. My truck.

Enjoy them while they are young fellers. It wont be long and they will be looking at Reel Porn themselves

Take a look at the sideplate again.  I thought the photos showed bearings.   If they are bushings, try to measure  the spool shaft diameter at the ends.  It should either be 3 mm for bearings or 3.2 (3.175)mm if you have the weird bushings.

I took a look at the Steve,
And they are bearings. Not bushings. Think I'll pull them and make sure they get packed real good before I close it up.

Something that's been going back and forth from one side of my head to the other is that the pawl must be worn out to bind the clicker arms up like that. This reel is from somewhere in the 70's I think ? That's 50 years that those nylon arms have been rubbing against the brass pawl. Now, I've sharpened a lot of knives, I know that something as soft as leather can ware down steel. Nylon can ware down brass.

So, instead of polishing it down worse, I'm thinking I need to either build it up, or replace it and get it back to where it was engineered to be at.

I'll check the right side plate to make sure it's a bearing as well tomorrow

You've been a big help Steve

Grande Thanks to ya`!!!!!!!!!!!

If one side has a bearing I'm sure both sides do.  That was a 6000c model which should come with bearings unless someone made it a frankenreel.

New click pawls are available (#8745 is about $2).  The whole click plate kit (newer but still the old 70's style) from Jerry Foran is only about $8, and I'm sure Jerry will know for sure if it fits.  All of the schematics I find from that time frame show the parts like in his kit.

For $4 per bearing, Jerry has new bearings that should fit.  If your son will be casting it, I would skip packing the bearings and go with oil or reel-x.

Point taken !
New bearings it is. I'll be given Jerry Foran a call today. Spect he'll get me set up. Might see if he has any of those pretty little felt packings as well.

Don't know if a power handle is the way to go on this reel, pretty much anything I do change it out with would be an upgrade. Have to look around or ask Jerry Foran what he would recommend ?

My to list for this reel is getting longer and longer, but I really think it gonna be worth the investment in the long run. Antiques around my house are like me. Not put on a shelf, put to work.

My boy walked by me last night and kinda, over his shoulder said "Making any headway on my reel ?" Extorsion !!!!!

Mr. Alan,
You Sir, are awesome. This site and the people you attract to it, make it a joy to reach out to a stranger and say, 'I gotta problem". The people I've had interaction with, phone conversations have given me an in depth education. Hell, people in my family think I'm some kinda wizard or something. I'm just a feller that's got a bunch of knowledgeable friends who are awesome.
Yourself, Bryan, Mr.Foakes, Steve, Greg (Snagged2) have all helped me get parts and pieces that I needed to repair someone else's wore out reel. BigT, MO65 (Mike), Festus and quite a few others who share their breakdowns, repairs and experiences are what makes "Reel Repair by Alan Tani", an exceptional place to meet people who share my interest. And, to get a wore out fishing reel working right again because it means something to ya

Thank you All for the help you have given me ~!

I'll let you all know how it turns out.
