there are still many of these reels in service.  not sure what's going to happen to them now.   :-\

Alan did Shimano redesign this reel ie the 700 to be more like the 250 and 400 to have fewer parts in later years ?

The original A series resembled an old ABU7000 clockwork mechanism - full of springs and levers.

The subsequent B series used the more typical sliding plate design found in most overheads achieving the same result with about half the moving parts.

The smaller models were completely different designs to the 700 reels using thumb bars to actuate a rotating cam ring.
