I've been building rods, repairing reels, taking customers fishing for over 50 years. I can honestly say ALL innovations, improvements, and advancements have come from SoCal. Even though I'm from South Florida, we pale in comparison to what you guys have done! I remember 30 years ago reading how to make my blue marlin Penn Internationals have a true free spool even though the drag setting was up there. It came from SoCal guys doing long range trips, and needing to get total free spool and keep hi drag settings. Now back looking into what's new, seeing double dog bridge plates, HD gears, washers, bearings, etc. Amazing!

Kudos to you all! And thanks for everything I've learned from you all!

Welcome Captain Wayne. Never fished on your headboats as I have always fished personal boats but I am a S. FL native also (from Key West but worked  25+ years in Miami) and most of the reel stuff I learned was from getting interested in Long Range fishing out of SD and found out about Alan before he started his own website.
Before that, I used to go years without servicing a reel or even changing line. I found that on LR boats some replace topshots after every large fish. No doubt reel upgrading and rod innovations started in CA.

Long range boats found the fish that the fishermen needed to catch! I'm sure if we had 200 plus lb YFT's we'd also have made the improvements!
Nastiest fish within reasonable reach for us are amberjacks and permit, big groupers on occasion. Most fish down here can be caught on 20 lb as long as you have enough of it!
I recently rigged my kite reels with 50 lb braid, 100 yds 30 topshot. Smaller reels mean more fun for the customer for sure!
Love this site thanks again

Reel 224

That's a fact on this site you learn a lot about reels and does and don't s. If you are a inspiring reel enthuses and want to be better at it. This is a great place.

Personally I came here Five years ago a rank novas and I have learned a great deal since, but always learning more.

Usually most of the innovations you'll see here on this site are group efforts, we are one big family here :).

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.
