Is there a way to tell which way is which?  Or they are all Standard in placing the line roller?  Wider section toward the screw area.

They usually fit better one way than the other, but a simple google search of your specific model should bring up a closeup photo or schematic to tell you which way it comes from the factory.
Love those open face spinning reels! (Especially ABU & ABU/Zebco Cardinals)

I scan my schematic and enlarge in my lappy.  The thing is so tiny can't even see which side if facing outwards, schematic is only good for telling the brief parts number.  I try Mr Google to see if my reel pop-up the line roller side view.

What kind of reel is it, make & model?

wider side goes into deeper cavity...  USUALLY

bail-arm cavity is deeper than bail head...  USUALLY

w/ a modern twist-reducing roller, the groove should be centered...  USUALLY

no rules, no standards, no conventions -- if you want better than guesses...

Pflueger Salt Spin 80.  It's a discontinue reel  :'(

You should be able to figure it out by watching this video, especially in the very beginning by stopping the spin.

I watch this before many times, though I can see the line roller but the water drop cover the scene  ;D ;D ;D

I guess I figure it out already, trying both way to see which reel in line better.  It's the wider section inward the bail arm area.

The reel in the video looks a lot like the Penn Fierce! Not the Penn Fierce II, but the first gen Fierce! I have a 2000 size, and the similarities are really, really close! I may be way off, but worth a look anyway! On my 2000, the big end of the roller goes on the bail arm side! Hope this helps!
Tight lines, be safe, fish hsard!

I inset a skewer into the support and then slide the components off.

Then I take a pic as a permanent record for my files.

Then there is usually no doubt when it comes to reassembly.

Clumsy move from me, should have lay-out properly when i take them out.  Didn't realize there is a wider n thin end in the line roller. A very stupid move from my end  :-[ :-[ :-[
