Hey guys, been a while.  I'm about to buy a Penn 12/0, and had a question.  Will an aluminum spool hold up with the drag insert upgrade, or only the cast bronze chrome plated spool?  I'm assuming that is the only thing I should be worried about other than upgrading all other internals to SS.  Thank y'all in advance!

Should be fine, aluminum spools are plenty strong.
Do what you can with that you have where you are

thorhammer

yep. Aluminum spool on 12/0 will withstand way more than average human wants to hold on to standing up. SS gear sleeve is your next move but again, plenty big fish were caught on that reel bone stock.

Should work fine, but I wouldn't run an insert without a stainless sleeve.
You will round the brass one off with the extra drag.

TS, this thread has some interesting information if you want to take a look:

Of course this was before the custom inserts for drags, things change quickly around here. :)

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

I went to Sal's original thread....two interesting things: Sal used a carbon fiber under main instead of the delrin he uses now (thanks again for the ones you sent me for 16/0, buddy!). It was also Daron's first post! He was about to go sharking for the first time and was trying to figure out the eccentric was backwards...I got a chuckle from that....he is now big Senator extraordinaire.

Yup! as I've mentioned, things get changed quickly around here :).
Delrin on the bottom of the gear and one on top of the stack works best.
I'm still not sure  about the brass gears on the 10/0 and up, I think they're plenty strong.
I know they're much smoother and wouldn't mind using them in my personal reels... I have not seen one showing damage yet, but I have seen a few brass gear sleeves get rounded.

You are correct John, Daron is a quick learner, he can now teach us a few things about these Senators.
