I picked up these reel for $40 and thought it was a great deal but once I opened it up, I noticed a chipped spool. The interals look good. How'd I do?

You made your money with the Tib frame. It looks quite used but that doesn't matter as long as all the screw threads are good. You could paint the frame but that won't last. Clean it up and service it and it will still have a lot of life left in it. If the chip in the spool is real small it may not matter. A chip in the spool can always be fixed with a little 2 part epoxy.       Rudy

Yup! It doesn't matter how it looks that reel is plenty strong.
Just make sure the front side of the frame  where the line rides doesn't have any chips, if it does you will need to sand it down.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Lets see the chip on the spool. Like where it is and such?

$40 is not bad with the well used frame but if you need to replace a spool add around another $40 to the cost.
